This was completely stop motion and took 3 1/2 years to finish. Crazy dedication and it shows.

Hm, I always took the Mayor as being more of a mano-depressive/bipolar type person, hence the overly happy face, and the sad/anxious face, and him instantly switching between the two depending on the situation. After all, Jack is the actual ruler, not the Mayor.

The film is produced by Tim Burton (very popular director) but directed by Henry Selick who deserves tons of credit for his amazing work on this and other stop motion films he’s directed. Jack Skellington’s singing voice is performed by Danny Elfman, who has done the music for almost every single Burton film, among other things. Not sure what Burton films you’ve watched yet but I recommend “Big Fish” big time. My personal favorite and probably one of Burton’s best films along with “Ed Wood”. Both well worth reacting to.

This came out a year after I was born so I saw it as a small child. Been obsessed with it ever since. It's really interesting to see videos on how they made the stop motion. I know it was shown in an episode of "The Movies That Made Us." 💀🎄🎃

If you like this kind of animation, there are a number of other movies done this way. The Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, The Box Trolls and if memory serves, Peter Gabriel's music video for the song Sledgehammer uses stop motion filming as well.

I saw the 30th anniversary for this in the theater a few months ago. I adore this movie. It is a bit strange and unique, but it's also very charming. I definitely wouldn't call it a straight up Christmas movie, but I also wouldn't call it a Halloween movie either. For me this is one of those movies I watch right after Halloween, but before Christmas. It's such an enjoyable movie and the music is extremely catchy. And when I saw this there was NOBODY else in the theater so I had the entire place to myself and yes...I was singing along because why not haha.

Yeah this movie is gorgeously made with stop animation models. It looks amazing to this day since they are real items being photographed. Tim Bueton got the idea for his book, that the movie is based on, after seeing Christmas decorations put out while Halloween items were still on shelves next to them.
@mevb
@mevb 8 месяцев назад
Tim Burton based this movie on a poem he did in the 80's which was a slight parody of Clement C Moore's Twas the Night Before Christmas, with the first line being parodied in his poem, inspired by his childhood when seeing the local mall being redecorated from Halloween display to Christmas, as well as watching the Christmas specias such as Rankin-Bass' Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer and Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch stole Christmas (directed by Chuck Jones). Tim wanted to make Jack Skellington a character who was the opposite The Grinch, a guy who loved Christmas and wanted to make it his own.

This isn't claymation. This is Stop motion. every single character is hand carved. each outfit they wear sewn and stitched by hand. each set, made by hand. every single time you see their face change expression is another hand carved face piece. Then there's the music. the cinematography. Nobody's allowed to hate this movie. Because it is pure art. also they can't remake it because nobody can remake this.

🎶 "Just because I cannot see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it!" 🎶 Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: The first fully animated Disney film to not be traditionally animated. Inspiration Origin Fact: Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing the Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination. Music Enthusiast Fact: In Oogie Boogie's (Ken Page) Song, there was a story boarded sequence where bugs came out of Oogie's eye and danced on his arm before he belches them off. It was removed from the film because it was considered difficult to make miniature armatures for all the bugs. Another scrapped scene involved his shadow dancing on a rotating orange background and was traditionally animated but ended up being cut for timing. Despite this, the lyrics during these scenes were included in the film's soundtrack. Math Enthusiast Fact: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's (Chris Sarandon) blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and most often credited for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.

Yes, it is, as you say "claymation", though nowadays it's called stop-motion animation since they didn't use traditional clay figures. But, yes everything minus some special effects was physically real. If you are interested in this type of animation I would recommend Laika Studios where many of these filmmakers ended up. Kubo & The Two Strings is a gorgeous film.

"Claymation" is a more modern term - the original is stop-motion animation, pioneered by such people as the makers of the original King Kong movie, Ray Harryhausen and the like. There may have been clay involved in some effects used here - Jack's expressions and mouth movements for example are all individually sculpted pieces/heads made of plastic modelling clay that are replaced frame by frame (they made a ridiculous number of them sum total), but the majority including Jack's body is simply either traditional stop motion puppets or puppets made partially or whole from foam latex over an adjustable skeleton/frame. Like the Professor's weirdo mouth/beak for example.

I'm a massive, MASSIVE, Nightmare Before Christmas fan. Clothes, bedspreads-- you name it, I've either got it, or have had it at one time or another. What surprises people, given this fact, is my take on Jack Skellington: he's a TERRIBLE person. 😂 From the very beginning of the movie, he's narcissistic, ungrateful, self-absorbed, and shows little to no care or concern for the people he dares to call his "friends" during the showdown between Oogie Boogie, or anyone in the entire movie. Listen, there's nothing wrong with becoming bored with or even changing your occupation in life. What you certainly don't do is... literally anything Jack does in the movie, lol. Let's examine his character. Jack Skellington uses his power and influence to manipulate every citizen of Halloween Town to ignore their own holiday (plus their natural desires and even attempts at creativity) and work for HIM so that HE can become this powerful "Sandy Claws" character, whom he then kidnaps, using three CHILDREN that he KNOWS have ties to Oogie Boogie. He doesn't care that they're rotten. Sure, he tells them to leave Boogie out of it, but Jack KNOWS they're tricksters, and that they're KIDS. Santa protests his own kidnapping several times, to his face, but Jack doesn't listen to a single thing he says. Just throws him back in the sack, doesn't check on him once, and doesn't send anyone else to, either. The Mayor depends on Jack to prepare and plan for Halloween. Yet whenever the Mayor tries to talk to Jack or express any concerns, he's ignored. Again, Jack doesn't have any concern for the time, needs, or desires of anyone but himself. Sally is a prisoner. Not only does Jack not try even once to save her from her captor-- he freaking elicits her captor's help in obtaining that "special feeling" of Christmas-- again, FOR HIMSELF! He goes. To Sally's CAPTOR. To borrow. Supplies. Furthermore, Sally REPEATEDLY attempts to make Jack realize that what he's doing is wrong (during her several escapes), but again, he just uses her to get what he wants (in this case, his Sandy Claws costume) telling her to get to work. The only reason he wanted to return to Halloween Town was because he failed at making Christmas (making Christmas, fa la la) and decides that he actually DID like the praise and power he got from being "I, Jack, The Pumpkin King!". He comes back and does rescue Santa and Sally, but given what we already know about his character and motivations, can we truly say it isn't entirely self-serving? He wanted his title back. He wanted his prestige back. He wanted his POWER back. There's no character arc here! Jack has ALWAYS been a trash person. To top it all off, after showing precisely ZERO love for Sally the entire movie (on the contrary; he shows her cold indifference at best, and wanton disregard for her well-being as a literal slave, at worst), he somehow expresses his true love for her? No! No, no, no, no, no. Jack doesn't love Sally. Jack loves Jack.
