No Western Customers at China’s Yiwu Toy Exhibition: Angry Exhibitors Request Refunds

On May 25, the last day of the 2024 Yiwu International Toys and Baby Products Expo , many exhibitors gathered at the entrance demanding refunds from the organizers. The main reason was that the fair did not attract the expected foreign customers from Europe and the United States, and there were very few visitors overall. Given the booth fee of 18,800 yuan, the turnout was far below their expectations. Angry exhibitors felt deceived and demanded a refund for their booth fees.

Aside from the fact the world started to go China-zero from 2018, no foreigners are going to risk arbitrary arrest and detention, or threats to their personal safety while in China. I suspect the travel advisories have a large affect on business travel to China. @@swisstroll3 By the time the geopolitical winds shift the capacity for China to be able to produce will be gone. They are in terminal decline as a demographics issue. Which is one of the reasons why they lost out on sales even with the current political climate: The labor isn't cheap anymore. The shipment cost + import duties were offset by low wages, but with China having a very large "middle class" that's not the case any longer. No young workers entering the workforce is a disaster. Few foreign nationals probably visting China these days. There is a skew of factors in this; 1. Unfriendly politics between China, North America and Europe, 2. Scapegoat culture being part of the CCP's DNA. To divert attention from it's own totalitarian enormities heaped upon the long suffering Chinese population, they use foreigner-bashing instead. Not just white people (excluding Russians), but Japanese as well. Actually, the Japanese businesses and people in China get the brunt of this ire from no fault of their own. Finally, 3. Autarky self-induced poverty. China is a quasi-autarky (totalitarianism again), because it places high barriers upon import of foreign manufactured goods entering China as a form of protectionism. Except specilized highly-engineered products like advanced silicon chips, robots and medical products it can't make for itself for various reasons (some political-economic). Now China is in a deep economic recession, there is little consumption from the masses anymore; combination of high debt and high unemployment.

This outcome (demanding refunds when expectations were not fulfilled) seems to stem from a belief that at some point that "all will be forgiven" by the foreigners and things will go back to the "good old days". A case of how hindsight is 20/20 (history as the expo did not perform as desired) and foresight is myopic and blind (future expectations of how expo would perform).

Being a boomer and a gearhead, I always would go to the toy department when I was a kid. The toys were so educational and fun. I could by dozens of model airplanes that actually flew, some were gliders that would fly by just throwing them and others came with rubber band motors that powered the flight of the model plane. Wamoo made a plastic boomerang that I could throw, and it would come back and I spent hours throwing on. The also made a sling shot that was deadly with the pigeons. There were model cars made by Tamya that were so detailed the suspensions worked there were wires for the spark plugs building one you could understand how a real formula 1 race car worked or your favorite motorcycle. We had model electric trains and race cars with tracks that made you understand that speed resulted in accidents. I remember my dad giving me visible V8 a model of a V8 motor that you put together with a battery powered motor that made the motor work exactly how a real motor worked. There were the chemistry sets to learn about chemical and microscopes to learn about nature and minerals. Walk a talkie that thought you about sound and battery power. We had the tinker toys that taught you the basics to build something like a windmill and then by the 6th grade you got the erector set with the transformer powered Farris wheel. All the toys were great fun to me that lasted days not minutes that the toys offer today. Now they sale radio-controlled cars that usually break with in a day or two. lots of stupid masks to pretend you are an X-man, tons of dolls for both girls and boys. The best they have come up with is LEGO that I find less than educational since whatever you make from them, they all look like blocks of plastic with finished. Most of the toys on sale today would not have kept my attention for more than 15 minutes. I married late in my 50s and have a son so whenever there was a toy store or a toy department at a store, I headed there first with my son to see what was on offer and always walked away very disappointed. Today's toys are usually thrown away still in good condition since they are so boring or stupid the kids play with them for only a short time. And today most of the kids go to their bedrooms and get out their computers or X-boxes and never leave the room, very seldom even playing with other kids. I can understand why no one bought any toy at the toy exhibit.

Poor quality products will eventually fail to sell. The market will determine supply and demand and higher quality products from other countries will prevail over the competition. This is business and capitalism 101. Russia experienced this in the 1950s-90s. The free world wouldn’t buy any Russian products and even the Russians who were permitted to visit the West bought western goods for their own consumption. China is learning a hard lesson re capitalism. You must produce a product of quality in order to make long term profits.
