Join the search for the USS ALLIGATOR, the Navy's first submarine, which sunk off Cape Hatteras in 1863. The ALLIGATOR was a technological marvel for its time and this expedition, led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Navy, and the University of New Hampshire, used specialized tools such as multibeam sonar and a magnetometer in the search.

Aside from the fact that the Plongeur existed 3 years prior to the Hunley, was 140 feet long (compared to the Hunley's 39,5 feet),weighed 381 tons (compared to Hunley's 7 tons), had a range of 5 nautical miles(I doubt the confederates could manage a tenth of that distance before being exhausted) making it a practical weapon it also didn't sink three times like the Hunley did. Jules Verne (the famous writer) saw it in 1867 and used it as an inspiration for "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea"

The USS Holland from 1897 was the first modern submarine the way we see them today. Using a combination of diesel and electric engines. I don't know how you can call the Hunley a "modern submarine" when it was still powered by human handcranking. During this time the French already had the submarine Plongeur which actually was the first to be propelled by mechanical power (and not human power) which IS one of factors you need to make a submarine practical. Plongeur used a compressed air engine

Maybe so, but modern or not, everyone can agree that David Bushnell made the first submarine, Leonardo da Vinci designed one long before him and someone else probably before him. History is complicated and inventors generally work off of the work of previous inventions.

ok as I understand the alligator was a submarine during the cival war,,I know very little about it,,and you tube doesnt have much information videos on her either,,was she ever found,,,what did she look like on the inside,,,how come the hunt for the alligator video documentry was so short,,,,isnt there a longer version of the video of the hunt for the alligator,,,,would like to know more

I first heard of this from a reenactor at Gettysburg with a display of iron clad ships. He said he was going to join in the hunt for this in the up coming weeks. I guess they still haven't found it yet. If they ever do it would re-write history a bit. Google it and there's a few drawings/posters of this submarine.
