The book Noam references is: "Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black..." -by Douglas A. Blackmon It should be required reading. (Edit) A book that has perhaps given me the most insight (as a White man) into Black America in the middle of the last century is: "The Autobiography of Malcolm X, as told by Alex Haley " It too should be required reading. "They Were Her Property", by Stephanie Jones-Rogers is a scholarly look at White women's role in slavery (White women owned about 40 percent of slaves in the US south.) "Incedents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is another must read autobiography by Harriet Jacobs One of my favorite essays of Dr. Martin Luther King, jr is "Letters from a Birmingham Jail"
Required reading Barbary Coast Slave Trade of White races. More White slaves in Africa than Black Slaves in America Thomas Sowell. African American Author.
I started reading it; wow, it’s not like we’re naive, but it’s incredibly more accurate and detailed. A must read. America’s sin after another great sin, the devastation of naive Indians.
God bless is just a phrase grow the fuck up. I'm an atheist as well but seriously.. astronauts also say godspeed when they're going to space. Guess what? Most of em are atheists
Whu does the question of 'white guilt' come up every time we talk about racial inequality? It because white people know they live in an unequal society, and that they naturally benefit from that fact. Thats why when you point out segregation in schools or job inequality, you see white people take it too personally, talking about guilt to avoid feeling it. That guilt isn't for having white skin. It because even you know you live in a society where having white skin benefits you.
Double Shrekt I have no guilt and often wonder why African Decendants dont beat up on those rich cheiftans in Africa that sold them out? History is not taught it has to be learned on our own I guess?
Constitutional Perfection, the problem is imperial racism. Nothing to do with any chieftains,in fact that sounds like your dodging the root of the problem.
michael clarke Really? Root of the problem? The slavery began by men with boats going to Africa to trade goods to Africans for Africans which became slaves all over the world. Those same Greedy Chiefs are the elites today in Africa that still have little regard for the common African. Now America and our govt has the same intolerance of anyone beyond themselves or the 13 families similar to African Elitists and the ignorant masses requesting Govt to resolve social issues is ridiculous, ignorant and lazy, changing social issues or morality thru threat of violence will never work due to its begotten immorality. I believe Socrates had a form for moral change stating just that. That brings us to modern Leaders of community and activists that have no desire to rid us if rascism either... good capitalists dont wish to be out of work therefore they stir the pot rather then educating and being honest they manipulate feelings and instintcual behaviour which when speaking of humans especially those under mind altertering stimulation via TV Radio Movies Print will easily beget ignorant and violent and the cycle continues.
Ummm so a Black Medical Dr. Makes less then a white medical Dr.? Where is this ineqaulity? in your mind a controlled mind. Man you desperately need some Thomas Sowell in your life and turn away from all forms of media for bout 6mo you be fine.
It’s sometimes shocking at the individual level but not at the group level after centuries of violence. This continues because in every community only the most publicly embarrassing examples are dealt with, never the roots of the problem.
BTW. I would prefer that drug possession gets decriminalized, and the problem gets treated as a public health concern. So, I'm not pro drug war by any means. If we could find a way to take the money out of the drug game I'd be all for it. Even if it means legalizing all drugs. I'm not convinced that legalization would end the black market however.
Real legalization would end the black market. Completely and quickly. Not only would the profit margins fall out of the incentive, legal production, import and sales of drugs would cost a fraction of illegal prices. But probably even more important is that they would be of far superior quality. The vast majority of health risks tied to illegal drug use comes from the fact that the substances are not clean. Most of the iconic drugs like weed, LSD, amphetamine, cocaine and heroin, just to name a few, are less harmful to the human biology than many of the things we see as part of our normal daily life.
As an Afro-American I can tell you that while Chomsky's analysis is basically correct, it only scratches the surface. It's good to know that SOME white Americans have a clue.
Thank you Mr Chomsky for your intellectual honesty.Definetly one of the most respected thinkers of the 21st century.Albeit, many with far less intellectual capacity and some with greater, would rather deny racisim exists even with history as an evident primary source of fact and current socioeconomic data supporting the legacy still continues. This double consciousness of reality and social dissonance are indications of a collective social schizophrenia as evident in the drug and alcohol culture and pharmaceutical industry used for alleviating and escaping this harsh reality.
Zachary J. Nixon I propose drugs and alcohol abuse are coping mechanisms in a social system predicated on white supremacy supported and upheld by a morbid form of capitalism that traumatises people psychologically. As a victim of White Supremacy I believe racisim exists, however I make no claim against those who don't.I would highly suggest objective history and primary evidence as fact to the matter that racisim exists. It didn't disappear from the psych of man, because of legislation. At the side of Mount Rushmore in the Dakota's ,Two of the four men iconic to America's foundation were slave holders, part of a legacy, human trafficking, kidnapping, crimes against humanity;but in the thoughts of many these were founding fathers, great men, principled. It all depends on what side of history your on.
dsongreg magnetic sperm I'm still confused, which of the four presidents atop Mount Rushmore are you implying were slave owners; b/c, as far as I know, NONE of the four were? Additionally, you've implied that because of something that happened among a minority of people minimal of 65+ years ago, that it would still be a standard in today's society or that it is still culturally or socially acceptable to do in today's society (b/c it 100% isn't). You're right, racism will ALWAYS exist, however, institutional racism, the racism we saw back in 1860's and many years before and couple of years shortly thereafter, are long since gone and to forever remain that way.
Zachary J. Nixon Thomas Jefferson and George Washington both owned slaves, symbolic of how entrenched racisim or White Supremacy is in the Americas.Since you agree that racisim will ALWAYS exist there shouldn't be confusion.Racisim in the 17th century and racisim in the 21st century is by precept a system of mistreatment, domination and subjugation of those people considered non white by those who are considered white and practice racisim,White supremacy in all areas of social activity.

Therefore, the mere fact that racisim exists,is problematic directly or indirectly for everyone.Racisim is very much institutional from government to private corporation's.there is an abundance of evidence to support that as fact, however;I can agree to disagree and wish you well.
If racism is a thing of the past and simply an "excuse" black people use for their own "laziness", "failure", and "innately dysfunction culture(s)" then what is Mr. Chomsky talking about?
What Noam Chomsky speaks about is gross Human Rights Violations against Indigenous and Afrikans. Yet, the society continues to say Amerikkka is the greatest country in the world. Well, perhaps their world but not the Indigenous or Afrikans! So how can you make America great again? All whose ancestors invaded or immigrated to this landmass has to give back to the land to the Indigenous. I know that is not apart of anyone's agenda because we are under the illusion that this is your land and my land, when clearly it's not. The Indigenous and Afrikans are still fighting to be free.
Queen Bonita Henderson i may have gotten confused there are 3 postings of this video people are chatting with me on. But Thomas Sowell truly brings light to reality. America is not good its evil PURE FUCKIN EVIL!!!! Zeitgeist. All life is priceless.
Constitutional Perfection I'm watching one of his documentaries now. I haven't ever heard of him. Although, I have read about the slavery worldwide. I don't believe only Afrikans has been enslaved. The enslavement by the Moors in Europe and Afrika was very horrific.
Queen Bonita Henderson As well Romans used Romans, as well as anyone else that needed "jobs" were enslaved. This is fully why I am all for the Zietgeist Movement as it removes govt and monetary systems, and we believe as life is priceless then so to is the earth. the logic and equity for all is the way we will evolve. Somehow mankind survived indeed flourished for hundreds of thousands of years without monetary or governments control an greed. Hmmm how did we do it? Maybe check out Liberty Pen in general has a lot of good fact based genius from the hoover institute. Sowell is incredible and has shut down everyone from Congress to Donahue with intelligent logical thought. Love that man he has taught me so much about what is really going on around me.
If you study the history of slavery, it has been going on since the beginning of time. Our founding fathers didn't cook up the idea of slavery and racism. It's the culture they grew up in. The slave trade in Africa was going on before, during and after slavery in America. And it was blacks who enslaved blacks and sold them them to people of countries around the world and kept some for themselves. And throughout history slavery was not racist. White people enslaved white people, black people enslaved black people. So if they want to talk about reparations, they would literally need to reparate 50% of the population of the world. So instead of teaching history as it really is they're slanting it to make victims out of one group and oppressors out of another. It is not productive it does not move the country forward.
Idiot, the “founding fathers” claimed to be inspired by Christian principles and morality. When did Christ say that slavery was acceptable? Didn’t he say we’re all children of God? Didn’t he say love one another as I have loved you? It’s the hypocrisy of all of those people and their economic interests. Go read a good history book and do some thinking. Probably you can’t.
Please educate your self on the difference between transatlantic slavery and other forms of slavery. That may help you understand better. Its important people are properly educated in order to understand the horror of the Trans Atlantic Slave trade
The Democratic Party does like to virtue signal about systemic racism but they don’t actually do anything about it. It’s just lip service to make white liberals feel good about themselves when they vote blue. Joe Biden funds the concentration camps at the Mexican boarder. If you’re trying to deny the existence of systemic racism in America, you’re either lying to yourself or completely uneducated.
Thomas Sowell is a pick me for white supremacy much like Candace Owens. What should one learn from a man who said Barack Obama is worse than Hitler lmao
About 40 million blacks in America, nearly 900K black millionaires, nearly 2.5%. There are over a billion people on the entire African continent and not even 200K millionaires (including non-black). Nowhere in the world, including Africa, have black people flourished as they have in America. And going back to the stupid drug excuse, I love beer. I have a beer every single night. But if I knew there was an organization (the government) that would destroy my life if they knew I was having a beer, I would never have one again. It is basic self control. If America is racist because some cops end up killing some criminals that I think racism is better than whatever they have in Africa where in 2021 they are still enslaving one another.
Oh boy are you in for a ride, guess why does africa doesnt have millionares, because US, Britian and france companies steal from those countries, some countries still pay reperations to france for getting independence from france. America essentially funded right wing militias from 1950-1980's in south american countries fuelling drug cartels from which its suffering today and funded right wing militias and or dictators in iran, iraq and other countries for oil interests or for helping britain whose effects of terrorism america and the world is now suffering from Next time read book or news before claiming a nation born out of slavery and a nation which killed countless in iraq and afghanistan for its own mistakes is anything but a paradise, there are many nations other than america to look up to black, brown and indigenous population. America is only attractive to people who sell out their dignity for few dollars> Oh and if you dont know after centuries of being enslaved by britain, european and america , many countries and people from other races are making a come back, in case you dont know china is giving a good fight to america on technical innovation front that america cant stop whining about china every day in and out, see you after 50 years when america will lose its top position both culutrally, economically and innovation wise to china and other countries in the south. Your own countries sins haunt you in the form of civil war(because of racism), drugs( due to the actions done in sout america) and terrorism(due to actions done in middle east). Have a fun 30 years before america becomes miserable.
There is no slave prison labor, idiought. There are criminals in prison who are given the option of working for very low wages, but none of them are forced to work, and it's hard to feel sorry for them, most of them are convicted murderers.
jose juarez search up criminalization of weed history to start. Will go into detail on how western states wanted to get rid of Mexican laborers during and around the Great Depression so unskilled jobs could go to taxpayers in the state. Thus weed was criminalized in an attempt to incarcerate Mexicans who smoked it while they worked the fields and prevent further from coming. That’s just a start. There is a lot of discrimination and economic disparities that affect the Latinx community in the u.s. historically and today
Are you suffering from insomnia?, is your bathroom faucet leaking?, did the vending machine confiscated your money without dispensing your rightful treat?, are you unable toplay the piano?, did you order your steak medium but it was well done? Has your neighbor borrowed your garden tools and never returned them? , ..., if so, consult Dr. Chomsky immediately, who would explain to you how&why the US military industrial complex and foreign policy are to blame for these and all other miseries you may have or will endure. (results may vary;)
Chomsky is complicated. His genocide denial is very similar to leftists who defend Russian imperialism because they think anyone who opposes NATO/US imperialism must be an anti-imperialist. It is an understandable mindset, but still despicable. A real cautionary tale. That said, some of Chomsky's writings are very useful and valuable. It is important to be able to take what is good from thinkers like him.
So, our society is racist because a lot of black people are in jail. I'm not sure why a linguist would have such confidence in lecturing us on this subject.
Of course much of what he's saying is absolutely true. On the other hand he appears to be speaking at a time when we had a black president. Truth lies on 2 sides of a coin. Revealing only one side is a distortion, and at this time in our history exacerbates the unnecessary division that we see all around us.
He makes a distinction between black elites and the mass of the population. Having a black president doesn't make racial inequality go away. That's like pointing to a billionaire and claiming poverty doesn't exist.
@@jabberw0k812speaking about elites, you know Noam has a net worth over 10 million dollars and has a monthly income of over a million dollars? Its just interesting always hearing how terrible elites are from someone who is richer than most people in the world ever will be
@@clearsky4042 When he's talking about elites, he's referring to the people who control the levers of society, not people who are wealthy. Elite does not necessarily mean rich. There's a difference between those who acquire their wealth from exploitation and those who acquire through non-exploitative means. I mean this is basic, elementary stuff my guy.
Yes, lots of racism, but not as simple as Noam makes it. I submit that my generation (50 y.o Swede) was the least racist generation ever. Before, the majority was the predominant racists. After, the minorities are. In fact it’s now so bad that out-of-touch people like Noam actually manages to reverse this yet again. Sorry, but you’re not helping.
I don't know about Sweden, but Chomsky's description of racism here in the USA is very perceptive. In fact, his truthful description just scratches the surface. As an Afro-American I've lived with this reality, and as a scholar have studied it. The picture actually gets worse if you explore more deeply. American white racism is a murderous mania.
why is REagan often caricatusised as an extreme racist? Why do some take it as a given? let us not use the term "extreme racist" on a whim here either; yes Reagan may or may not have been a bit racist; so what?
@@molybdenumrose I woulnd't describe the "war on drugs" as racist per se; and even if it was it's not as if Reagan would have been the only republican or even democrat in to that stuff. Reagan was in many respects a glorified puppet; I doubt his conviction in race were that strong in one way or the other; was just an actor there to smooth things out.
@@SUpersaiyajinjerkbag The War on Drugs was extremely racist, but that isn't even what I was thinking about. Ronald Reagan opposed every single piece of civil rights legislation that passed his desk. He publicly called Africans "monkeys", and supported gun control when groups like the Black Panthers began forming. In fact, his efforts as governor of California to prevent Black people from arming themselves is where California's strict gun control laws originate. As for other democrats and republicans of the time supporting the War on Drugs, I believe they are extremely racist as well (yes, that includes Joe Biden). In any case, whether or not Ronald Reagan was personally a strongly opinionated racist (I believe it is pretty self evident that he had a great personal distaste for black people), he consistently enacted racist legislation. I have little interest in reading the colors of people's souls, but racism has a practical purpose to the wealthy as do all forms of exploitation and so describing an action as racist or racially exploitative is much more practical. Ronald Reagan consistently did racist things, things that made it easier to exploit the poor, the marginalized, and in particular black people. I do recognize that if he was gone, someone else probably would have taken his place, but in these situations "Reagan" and the "Reagan administration" are pretty interchangeable, and can be used to mean the political tribe that was in power in the 80s
I cant believe I'm doing this, but I just have to stop you there. Chomsky is no nitwit. I would suggest you listen to some more of his work and you will find him to be very informative on a wide range of issues. Stop allowing Hollywood and the mindless mainstream media design your opinions for you.
MLK would rip this WOKE CRT DEI garbage to shreds. Fighting racism by using racism is an anathema to be everything MLK said and believed. Barak Obama set race relations back 50 years by invoking the spectre of racism every chance he got. A miserable litany of abject demagoguery that led to violence and a fascist ideology of pure skin color racism. Obama learned his twisted logic from Jeremiah Wright and Sol Alinsky. His hypocrisy resulted in a divided USA. His VP is even worse for race relations. MLK history is twisted and forgotten. Even Malcom X predicted and understood race relations better than these lunatics in the Democrat Party, K -12 and University Academic administrators. BLM ANTIFA are evil sadistic greedy violent Movements led by overwhelmingly white suburban middle class punks armed with Marxist platitudes and token Black money laundering suckers,
