Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, cognitive scientist, political commentator, social justice activist, and anarcho-syndicalist advocate. Sometimes described as the "father of modern linguistics", Chomsky is also a major figure in analytic philosophy. He has spent most of his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is currently Professor Emeritus, and has authored over 100 books. He has been described as a prominent cultural figure, and was voted the "world's top public intellectual" in a 2005 poll.
Chomsky spoke on the "Cognitive Revolution" at the University of Girona in Spain in November of 1992.

Chomsky certainly knows that the reason AI has taken over is because their program is basically "let's build better computers" and IBM et al are like "here's a billion dollars". Which one would you study? He's pulling his punches to be as generous to the field as possible and its still absurd and remains so to this day.

the best! It's amazing how much BS is in the field once you've had it pointed out by chomsky and other critics.

TL;DR - the entire damn talk was about the turing test i have a hard time understanding what the purpose was to go over it and over and over when the simple explanation of "to fool a human into thinking the machine was a person" pretty much sums up the entire ridiculousness of assuming that's your AI criteria. yes, we understand how irrational the sciences can be when as a body they take it seriously. let's move along shall we?

Plenty of interesting observations tho. Especially about the 'purposelessness' of natural objects, like language
