democracynow.org - Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited President Trump to Moscow just days after the White House postponed a planned meeting between the two leaders in Washington until after the midterm elections. The invitation to Moscow comes after Trump and Putin met for a summit in Helsinki, Finland, earlier this month. For more about U.S.-Russian relations, we speak with world-renowned political dissident, author, and linguist Noam Chomsky. He is a laureate professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Arizona and Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he taught for more than 50 years.

Yup, he was WRONG. Russia invaded Ukraine out of the blue. There was no provocation. And Russia has made things so much worse for them now. Countries are going to be lining up to join NATO, like Finland etc. In the end NATO was created to keep bullies like Russia from attacking them. All Putin has done is prove how necessary NATO is.

This needs a billion views not a few thousand. Excellent observations by Chomsky highlighting how everyone is deviated away from the important issues. People hardly see further than the end of their ears. Also note RU-vid is manipulating and changing what we get to see, now that they have an unchallengeable monopoly. They recently removed information of upload date and removed dislikes information. Did they ask if thats what users really want or need? Or more likely sponsors and advertisers prefer things blander where we can think less and follow the fashion more.

Chomsky is correct, but your headline for this video is not. To say that the US must challenge the expansion of NATO is to turn reality on its head: the US (its entire foreign policy establishment) is the main driving force behind NATO expansion. One could argue, that perhaps the people of the US would not want such a policy...but this is rather naive, since most Americans have been kept in the dark of US foreign policy to start with...and have never been informed of what is being done in their name. Slowly and over time, Democracy Now has morphed into a defender of the US National Security State, a truly lamentable situation, which goes hand in hand with its funding models, which increasingly depends on Foundations - i.e. entities which are NOT grass-roots.

Chomsky seems unaware of the danger of Russia and their brutal regime. NATO is the only way small countries can defend themselves. The government of Finland is moving ahead with a formal assessment of whether to apply for NATO membership, and will present its findings to parliament next week, the Finnish foreign minister said in Brussels. For decades, the Nordic nation that borders Russia has resisted invitations to join the North Atlantic security alliance. But Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced it to reconsider, and public opinion in Finland has swung in favor of joining NATO.

And, the obvious answer is that they had been forced into the USSR, in the past, and didn't want to be, again. That is not true: for 4 years they will be no non-German NATO forces on the territories of the former GDR, as long as the Soviets hasn't moved their troops out of the GDR in 1994, and that was fulfilled by the German Government, and that was all of it. Further east was never considered, because that was the most eastward possible at this point in time, the rest is revisionist history. And I'm from West Berlin in Germany, and with that I claim for myself to have some historical competence in regard to this topic. And NATO was although considered by everyone in Europe as protection from each other, and Gorbi agreed to Germany choosing their own alliance or even no alliance at all, not accepting direct NATO Membership. With unification of course, all former GDR troops were instantly NATO Troops, but they were German NATO Troops as agreed on with Gorbi.

William Zeier You are wrong. You are listening to Western media to form your opinion without any Actual knowledge of what occured... The PEOPLE voted to join Russia. Putin requested parliamentary approval to dispatch troops to Ukraine to safeguard Russian interests. By early March 2014 Russian troops and pro-Russian paramilitary groups had effectively taken control of Crimea, a Ukrainian autonomous republic whose population was predominantly ethnic Russian. In a popular referendum held on March 16, *residents* of the Crimea *Voted* to *join* Russia, and *Western* governments introduced a series of travel bans and asset freezes against members of Putin’s inner circle. On March 18 Putin, stating that the Crimea had always been part of Russia, signed a *treaty* incorporating the peninsula into the Russian Federation. Over subsequent days still more of Putin’s political allies were targeted with economic sanctions by the U.S. and the EU. After ratification of the treaty by *both* houses of the Russian parliament, on March 21 Putin signed legislation that formalized the Russian annexation of Crimea. The PEOPLE wanted to join Russia. The western governments meddled... as usual. That's exactly what Chomsky is saying. You are being led by your nose by propaganda. The oldest trick in the book. I suppose you think the white helmets are good guys too??? You people are literally hysterical. We are NOT enemies of Russia. We trade BILLIONS of dollars in goods.... When this adversary thinking began to fade, the concept of "Russian hordes" (not hoards) standing ready to invade Europe also began to fade. That was of course before Putin became President of Russia. In 2000, nobody knew that Putin wanted to restore the Russian empire. I have no idea what he's blathering on about. Somehow they call him "world renowned"? On what? I've seen other stuff with him rambling on, it's worthless. Improving relations on Russia.... yeah, no crap that would be a good thing. It takes two, so where it goes who knows, but you have to try. That's not enlightened, it's obvious. Can anyone get anywhere with NOKO? Well, you have to try. DUH! This is obvious. This is the problem, this guy is a genius to some. There is nothing genius about this. Its pretty obvious. Why should we communicate with Russia even when we have bad relations. They have the ability to wipe out our country and our allies. By doing so, they get wiped out. The point of MAD is still relevant. It should be. It does not take much of a history lesson to remember Cuban missile crisis, the 1982 war games that almost caused ww3, some radar that mistook a sun rise as a missile attack. How is this enlightened. Obviously we need to be able to have some relationship with them and reality is reality. So I agree with him on that, but it goes without saying, or at very least should go without saying. Does not matter how bad Russia gets as a player, we have to talk draw some lines, and then act if those lines are crossed in a way that makes it clear we are headed down a path that could lead to war, not just piss and moan until some war happens. I see nothing other than the conclusion it's all we got, and for the most part, all they got at this stage. Reality. The parts about Trump acting childish... how? I would argue he has to be consistent if he's being honest the whole time, and he was that. It's not only the investigation, it's the whole ball of wax of the DOJ. And yes, they do suck and are obviously corrupt. And we have to say the caveat "only at the top," the rest is ok. How? How is the rest ok? When someone somewhere in the DOJ actually makes a play and comes clean and spills what is obvious, good, then we can start to be ok with some. But good god, no, somewhere someone who has taken an oath to uphold the .... I don't know.... LAW .... has to actually uphold the law and take their oath serious. Not just sit on the sidelines while all this stuff goes on above them. Congress should just wipe the whole structure of the FBI away and start from scratch. It's apparently terrible the whole way thru. They should do the same with the IRS. Just not worth anything and has zero credibility. We need a federal law enforcement agency. That I will say. But one that actually is for enforcement of the law that congress has passed, not some whacked out political sideshow that is at the whim of ideology of it's own self importance and therefore the existence of itself above all else. That's what it is, call a spade a spade and be damn all the political correctness. Problem is, we need a federal law agency yesterday, today, and in the future and it's not good to have some reset with a large lull of having nothing. So someone in the complete know please step up to the plate and do the damn job you took an oath that you would do. They are basically flipping off congress! CONGRESS! By letting all this go on, you are the very thing the FBI is suppose to enforce, they are making it harder on harder on themselves going forward because no one in this country believes they are non-bias officers of the law, and therefore are a non-trust entity that is not accountable to the law themselves. We already have the point of a vast amount of people are willing to violently break the law in the form of protest all over the place. To some of us the progressives seems silly and childish. But to them, and it does not matter why they believe it, the fact is they do, they see an arrest as a badge of honor in these situations. We are getting to the point the people on the right are going to be the same way at the FBI and federal institutions. They will see it as a badge of honor in their fight against this stuff. The FBI, IRS, EPA, DNR already have enough bad vibe from citizens whom they work for, not at. That's the problem, we see them as working at us, not for us. How much farther does the needle move the wrong way before another movement against them turns more violent and reckless from the right side of the political spectrum. Point is, the dial is moving the wrong way, and these things are obvious. Listen to the people and it is correctable I think. Not many people would wish it gets to a point no one can imagine it could get to. We already have a movement to get rid of ICE, go and distrust local police and demonize them which that itself has really bad repercussions. Trump got support because he is an outsider, a populist, a clean the swamp up kinda guy. And the swamp doubles down? He has a large, very large support that is loyal beyond loyal. Reform is not being asked for, it is being demanded. That's why he became president. But instead, lets have a witch hunt, lets obstruct the house of representatives..... The DOJ has done nothing more than step forward to basically raise their hand and shout to the rest of America, you want corruption in government, we are the biggest baddest corrupt thing around. Really? How stupid is that. It does not help the problem that is the undercurrent of distrust in the federal institutions growing larger by the day, it is like throwing gas on a fire. This is a fact I don't even think ole' Noam could dispute. Trump becoming president is a direct result of the growing distrust in the federal government. I would argue that is the number one reason how he won, and if that reason did not exist, he would not have won. In a twist of irony, the DOJ itself helped him win with how they handled the whole Hillary thing first by dismissing any illegalities then just to announce they are looking into it again..... I would say a lot of things he ran on did cause support, but nothing as big as our institutions are out of control and immune to being accountable. The drain the swamp thing was a massive huge thing he ran on. The country wants not what we have, something more humble different and accountable. Any FBI agents who would find their moral compass in the know would be very appreciated and very needed.
