On Thursday night, hundreds of people packed into the Old South Church in Boston to hear the world-renowned dissident and linguist Noam Chomsky speak. He looked back at the rise of fascism in the 20th century and the growing ultranationalist movements of today, from Brazil and the United States to Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Indonesia America ??? He doesn’t argue from traditional Marxist paradigms at all. He argues influenced by anarchist paradigms, but in a much more functional, policy oriented way. He rarely uses the theoretical parts of his ideology in his argumentation. The core of traditional Marxist thought is dialectics and Marxist theory, and Chomsky almost never uses the former and rarely the later. Neo Marxists are steeped in the postmodernist tradition, which Chomsky actively critiques. It’s why he doesn’t get along with famous Marxists like Zizek. Even the most “moderate” Marxists at least use Marx’s critiques of capitalism as a starting point. Chomsky almost never uses any of Marx’s arguments against capitalism

Misleading of Chomsky to pretend the young people of America can do anything to influence foreign states. Just look at how long the US has been trying to nudge South America. Has it worked? Chomsky's rhetoric is perverse, in this case, I think it coincides with a greater leftist rhetoric that humanity's natural state is globalist or universal. This rhetoric gets young Americans to feel less connected to their homes and more open to the world. The world is not open its unforgiving. The gloablist / universal vision you have in your minds wont be achievable for 500-1000 years - Not until you give developing countries a chance to go through the process of growing intellectually and spiritually. The US is ahead of the curve in that sense.

Garfield I don't think I see the youth worrying about home though. Sure they rally and call for free education and a friendlier form of capitalism but while they do that most of their rallying is occupied with pushing for an open-borders globalist world and throwing allegations of racism at anyone who dares try to have a debate about whether that's a good idea. I think this is all exasperated when Chomsky starts flirting with a "Nazi-ism is on the rise again" statement.

I get that Noam is very careful about not wanting to fuel the current hysteria and acknowledging that some of the same people defeated fascism the first time around, but at some point we will have to name and evaluate the blueprint for all these 21st-century ultra-nationalist movements. Let's be careful not to demonize people and draw a sharp distinction between the general population and the elites, but we better be able to accurately analyse their methodology - it's just too sophisticated and frighteningly successful to ignore at this point.

@Zappa I'm very familiar with Chomsky's writing (both the scientific/linguistic part and the activist/political one). It's just that - at least at some point - we will have to name and analyse the intellectual origins of all these modern ultra-nationalist movements, i.e. what the Russian people have been subjected to for at least a decade now. Chomsky, for good reason, avoids pointing this out because he is - rightfully so imho - concerned that it might stoke misdirected and dangerous anti-Russian resentment. @others: Neoliberalism vs. nationalism is a false dichotomy and there's probably nobody on earth who is more aware of this than Chomsky.
@view1st
@view1st 4 года назад
@@yurona5155 Could this thing the _"Russian people have been subjected to for at least a decade now"_ be by any chance the same thing that, when it's the West doing it (as in fighting fascist Germany or communist Korea), is called patriotism and is celebrated constantly in war movies and remembrance parades? If the Russian Federation wasn't faced with so much unrelenting hostility coming from the West (NATO militarism, EU sanctions, US economic and financial warfare) then it might not be in need of this 'nationalism' so much. But just like the Soviet Union, Russia simply cannot afford to not to have such a strong nationalist element to its culture given the threats constantly posed by western cultural subversion and predatory capitalist expansionism.

I have been paying attention to and tried to understand Noam Chomsky for a while for the reason that he appears as an intellectual defender of the liberal ideas. Thus far, every video clip I have watched about him left me more puzzled and disoriented than satisfied. I have been carefully looking for the central hypothesis and explanation to those claims. Time and time again, I could not find any substantial content in his speech. Every speech from him I have watched thus far can be described as simply listing out world/US events taken in opposition to liberal beliefs, perhaps in a subtle manner that attracts the audience with liberal taste, contrasting the "virtues" of the liberal ideas and the "problems" of any position that deviates from them. The trouble is, in no occasions I heard him explain how his liberal perspective is valid and why those opposing reactions are problematic. And it is as if the laying out of that contrast between liberal and illiberal ideas itself becomes the defense for his liberal position. In my very broad observation, the liberal belief, as a whole, is like Noam Chomsky. Each time I look for substantial contents in their ideas, I end up with regurgitation of their list of liberal beliefs as if their positions themselves are axiomatically virtuous.
@avidmisreader
@avidmisreader 5 лет назад
Maybe you're projecting? I find most any point Chomsky makes a hell of a lot more substantiated than your comment. Anarcho-syndicalism and sociolibertarianism don't seem very hard to define or understand, except maybe to the most polarized and -izing. Even Wikipedia does an ok job of it. As instructive as it would be for us to know every intricacy of Chomsky's politics, alignment shouldn't (dis)qualify arguments.
@neutralcriticism4017
@neutralcriticism4017 5 лет назад
@@avidmisreader Pardon me, your response just falls as yet another example of the point I made in the comment. All you did was to throw some terms around such as "Anarcho-syndicalism" or "sociolibertarianism", and somehow you seem to think that the existence of the terms itself qualifies as a justification? Sure, as you say "alignment shouldn't (dis)qualify arguments", but if that's all that's prompted you to criticize my comment, you've missed more than half of my point. I appreciate that you wrote a response, so I would like to make the best of it. Would you care to give a substantial "content" that I am looking for? You mentioned those two terms. I take it that Noam Chomsky's political belief is best approximated by those? Would you care to give references of instances where he makes constructive argument for those systems?

The UK is a liberal, leftist extremist state. If the arrest of Assange is to blame on an ideology systematic in the UK, then that ideology is that of liberalism, which gave birth to feminism, marxism and communism. Three ideologies that loathe freedom of expression and speech. Assange wasn't arrested by a nationalist state but by a liberal one that promotes all the toxic virtues of liberalism, sex without inhibitions, immorality, deviant sexual orientations, gender fluidity and feminism.

In what world are our kids getting dumber? Who you are around is a reflection of you. This generation and future ones are more intelligent, kind, wise and free thinking. It is the past generations who have created horrible world wars, wall street, destruction of the planet, female abuse, gay bashing, hanging black people from trees. More people from the younger generations will not tolerate this. They are exposing the lies. The reason kids aren't on the streets as much is because of the higher amounts of population which has left them vulnerable to more crime. You go and find a small town in Idaho or Montana and the kids are running around carelessly. Parents aren't being overprotective its that neighborhoods have changed. Kids are still running around in the inner city too. The younger generation is doing just fine, worry about your own habits first.

Instead of democratically elected populist nationalists, I fear the alternative far more: unelected, non-representative administration by supranational entities, and the total subordination of national interests to international rules and regulations.

Chomsky at his absolute worst. His philosophy is awesome, as is his linguistics and critique of capitalism. But his political views are hot garbage and a bit reactionary themselves. But from the far left. I feel Chomsky is paranoid or scared that people will notice that Jews are over represented in a lot of American institutions and will get angry. But are we seriously suppose to ignore ethnicity and the role it plays in real life? Terrible, terrible take. This will always come up.
@RochesFan

"Reactionary" has mostly been used as a slur against political dissidents in one-party Communist states, so there's the lingering connotation that one _must_ be on the right politically for it to apply. But it begs the question: reactionary in relation to _what_ status quo? If globalism had been ascendant for decades, then I think Chomsky would count as a left-wing reactionary for his opposition to this reassertion of nationalism.

That said, some friends have been recommending I read Proudhon, and so I might dip into Rocker as well. Could you give me a quick outline of his thought, or direct me to one? My quick search didn't turn up any one definitive primer of this thought.
@lulu4882
@lulu4882 5 лет назад
@@RochesFan the primer i'm referring to is just called Anarcho-Syndicalism: Theory and Practice by Rudolf Rocker. i'm not sure how knowledgeable you are on socialism, but this is a single youtube comment, so i don't really think this is the right place to elaborate the entire backdrop of all the ways in which capitalism is bad before diving into syndicalism. for these purposes, we'll just suffice it to say that it's because while capitalism creates a lot of wealth, it's inherently distributed extremely unequally, resulting in an inevitable tendency towards a very small minority of the population accumulating a ridiculously disproportionate amount of wealth, and by extension, power over others, especially the people they employ, resulting in abhorrent working conditions and abysmal wages (these have improved substantially thanks to these very syndicalist labor movements, but syndicalism has more substantial aims than "nicer capitalism"). because individual workers are so powerless over their conditions compared to the capitalists, syndicalism aims to balance the power scale by forming radical unions which give workers leverage over their despots through engaging in practical tactics such as general strikes, sit-ins, boycotts and sabotage to achieve their demands. ultimately, anarcho-syndicalism aims to completely replace the capitalist economy and the state by transferring the control of the production to the unions themselves, freely cooperating in a confederation, who can decide what to produce and how to produce it democratically and ethically, instead of the capitalists making people produce whatever is profitable regardless of the social harm or the oppressive conditions. you could say it "found purchase outside of academia". we have what limited workers' rights we have today thanks to the extremely hard fought battles of the radical labor unions of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the movement found its most substantive realization in anarchist sections of Spain in the civil war during 1936-39, before it was finally crushed by Franco's fascist regime. (if you're wondering, they lost not because people were too lazy to work without a taskmaster dangling a wage in front of them -- quite the opposite was the case, if you want to read their history -- it was because of counter-revolutionary efforts by the authoritarian "communist" party and a worldwide embargo placed on them resulting in a complete lack of military aid while fighting a fascist regime.) finally, i'll say i'm not a syndicalist myself, because i think we live in times where the ecological state of the planet and our very psychological and social fabric have been degraded by hierarchy to an extent that fighting oppression in the workplace, if it ever would have caused the holistic social revolution necessary to liberate this world, is now no longer sufficient. i think it has very valuable ideas and tactics that are worth salvaging and incorporating into a more whole revolutionary theory. i lean towards democratic confederalism, another libertarian socialist theory which is being put into practice in Rojava today, currently on its 7th year of autonomy, also based on direct democracy, worker's co-ops and confederation instead of statehood.

Ultra-nationalism is evil. However, it is clearly a reaction against ivory tower liberals who have a greater interest in virtue signaling (and furthering their careers) than in forming reasonable policy. We had asinine ideas pushed upon us (such as an open gates policy on immigration). Most ordinary people simply expressed a wish to have a sensible immigration policy so as not to end up like Germany - which is pretty fucked in that area by any standard. And what do decent ordinary people get for voicing their opinion? The ignorant liberal response: You're all Nazis, you don't know what your voting for so your vote doesn't count, you're all Islamaphobic etc. etc. Our university students, the media, and liberal politicians happily join the chorus as reason (and genuine care for others) is drowned out in the noise. Chomsky, as usual, remains silent on this fact and focuses on the symptoms of the problem.
@sgt7
@sgt7 5 лет назад
@@wa57s577 Well if you're a privileged liberal or an immigrant you will improve your situation, of course. I'm talking about the country as a whole - the majority of ordinary people. According to YouGov.de, 72% of Germans said their immigration policy is "negligent" - only 12% think it's right. In fact "A report from the Institute for Employment Research found that just 10 percent of the working-age refugees who arrived in 2015 were employed by 2017". This is just one of many scandals. Merkal was eventually pulled out of her liberal ivory tower by the reality three years after implementing her policy. She began to significantly backtrack on her policy by agreeing to speed up deportations of refugees who had already registered in the EU. Don't misunderstand me, I do not think the immigrants did anything wrong. It was Merkel and her policy that has proven itself unworkable which is the problem. She should help immigrants but in a way that takes into account the resources of ordinary people - which she and her other privileged liberal friends used to fund their policy.
@sgt7
@sgt7 5 лет назад
@@wa57s577 This is my point! It's impossible for these immigrants to be trained properly or get jobs because there are so many of them. Merkel is throwing tax payers' money into a black hole. I'm not saying it's the immigrants fault. It's Merkel's fault for attempting to implement a policy that was doomed to failure from the start. Liberals have a tendency to think that resources are unlimited, that you can have your cake AND eat it. Would it not be better to let fewer in and train/integrate them properly than to open the door to floods of immigrants (not all of whom are refugees).

For any people saying Assange isn't a journalist, ok let's say he isn't. Let's say for example that someone sees a woman being attacked by a guy who is clearly going to brutally rape her. The guy who sees this beginning to happen grabs the assailant and knocks him out, stopping the attack. They call the authorities who show up and find out what happened. The authorities upon hearing what happened say to the man who stopped the crime "you're not a member of law enforcement you had no right to get involved so we're arresting you. The woman hearing this screams at the cops that it's not right that he's a hero and she will testify. The cops lock her up too and say she's not allowed to testify and they will put her into solitary confinement. Does that sound morally right? Have we become a society of functions and right vs wrong just doesn't matter anymore? The whole thing is twisted. People should be focusing on the WAR CRIMES that were committed. How is that not the focus of the media!? Oh yeah, the sellout corporate media. Brought to you by Boeing!

A global socialist police state is not something I want to live under and I will not accept that this will be the future of my children. As we do not learn from history and do not teach analysis and critical thinking in school, what is to be expected? The theoretical historical societal pendulum has continued moving from a short middle ground to the other end. Whether the pendulum theory is valid or not, the truth is that ideas are moving and changing constantly. Why, also due to the fact that when one side wins support and becomes the trend, it pushes its position too much, cornering the other side/opinions and different thoughts; mocking them and as a mattress spring, they get pushed to a point and bounce back with vengeance. sad but with observation, one tends to conclude that the world moves from one extreme to the other with a little time in the middle..

It's not obvious that people want to live in the same ideal he wants. He also doesn't mention ethnicity. Jews were hated because they were seen as a group of bankers who run things in their favor as an ethnic group. Has that changed? Not really. Most American institutions, as Noam knows, are now more Jewish than ever. Are we not suppose to talk about that?
