Maddie tends to know things she shouldn't because she can hear the narrators. When the narrators said in the trailer that the brother was locked in the basement, Maddie can hear them. She knows now.

Fun fact: just like how Geppetto made Pinocchio, Pinocchio(as a human adult) made Cedar.

So they never get into it on the show but Apple has extreme PTSD from almost accidentally dying as a young child when she strayed away from the rules - she nearly drowns as a kid - and basically gaslit herself into wanting to keep her destiny out of that fear (she also has an intense fear of big bodies of water but that never really comes into play during the series either). Let's just say tho that things get better and characters develop LOL

I had to hold myself back SO HARD when you were wondering about Cerise Hood and why she growled LMAOOO you're so not ready for her backstory

I will say, even though Apple was likely thinking mostly about herself, the headmaster said that the whole STORY would disappear if Raven didn't sign. So it wouldn't have just been her, but Apple, Daring, and anyone else involved too. That's probably why Apple thought of it as selfish, because it potentially puts a lot of people in danger. (still on Raven's side, but context)

I love the idea behind maddeline hatter, she can speak to the narrators and hear them but no one else can so they perceive her as mad like her father, its similar to how deadpool is written. btw i am pretty sure the narrators are not god, just storytellers who are their to narrate the story.

you missed the part where madeline introduces the "random guy" as Giles GRIMM, which gives him a certain level of credibility, especially if you dont trust the Principal and you consider there might be a reason he is both trapped and cursed to speak weirdly

Mathew, just one advice... When watching the episodes, be mindful of the specials, because they are not listed the same way as the episodes, as some specials happen during the middle of a season and some episodes need them to be better understood.

Fun fact! In the books for Ever After High, the scene of Raven denying her legacy and saying she was going to write her own destiny, she actually rips out her page in the Storybook of Legends, which is cool as hell and I'm sad they didn't keep for the show

The way some of the people in the fandom tries to genuinely convince others that the rebels are selfish for not following their "destiny" cause now the royals can't have their happy endings are crazy af to me. Like are they supposed to be guilty and responsible for that just cause they don't want the short end of the stick? This is why Apple took a long time for me to like. That said i don't dislike her now(even though she's still not a fave and i still think that Darling is too good for her srry) i really hopes you guys continue reacting to this. My favorite characters are Kitty Cheshire and Lizzie Hearts

Apple character development is actually often discussed in the fandom 😅 If it is good and you like her or you dislike her depends on you but for now she is definitely self-centered and naive

The thing about eah is that they follow the original stories NOT the Disney versions of the stories which is why the stories might seem a little different

I think the whole reason Raven is the only one to ever question her destiny is because her father is "The Good King" and since her mom "The Evil Queen" is locked in a mirror she spent most of her time around her dad making her "corrupted" into being good, And the reason no one else ever did either was because they either liked their destiny or even just want their parents proud

I feel like Ever After High would have been so successful if they continued on with their story. It’s so engrossing and sometimes all it takes is time for a good show to take off. It’s really to bad it was cancelled. I was so hooked on this show when I was younger.

The fact it probably got canceled because of Disney descendants is so sad It’s also hilarious how the “ea” on the keys and like the whole abbreviation of Ever After looks like a 69 Oh and Madeleine hatter is THE BEST or almost best showcase of the whole madness theme of Alice in wonderland

the book is actually even cooler in how it depicts legacy day. raven not only sees her story but sees her follow in the exact same path as her mother who, slight spoilers, expands outside of her story and tries to take over other worlds too. the evil queen is so controversial bc she not only acted outside her story but she placed an evil curse on wonderland and some students and adults were able to flee (maddie lizzie kitty etc) but they’re basically stuck in ever after and can’t return home bc of the curse. and i’m pretty sure the evil queen also took over the sleeping beauty story, cursing her instead of the actual villain of that story? anyways, when raven refuses to sign, she doesn’t just close the book, she actually crosses out her page and *rips it out*. idk i just thought it was pretty badass of her. also, cute little additional thing, during legacy day practice dexter asks headmaster grimm a question bc he doesn’t exactly know what his story is, since there’s so many prince charmings that get randomly assigned a fairytale, and he’s told he will see it on the actual day. raven then goes up to do her own rehearsal and she sees dexter, the only person looking at her, smile at her and she thinks “if dexter was brave enough to ask a question, maybe i can too” so she asks what happens if she doesn’t want to sign. i love these two

Cedar was carved by Pinocchio, so that why she's a puppet, and instead of her nose growing when she lies she cursed to be unable to lie. Cerise is red riding hood's daughtter, their family just has a secret. Also please watch more, this whole series is amazing!

This was one of my favorite shows to re-watch over and over again as a kid! I was so sad when I found out it was canceled because it couldn't compete with Descendents T_T

I just got into the series, and have been bingeing it for a while now. The series is for kids, but there’s elements and plot points/little details in the writing and themes for adults to appreciate. Especially if you know the fairytales by the Brothers Grimm, there’s also a few nursery rhymes and Mother Goose stories in EAH. But ultimately, the show is pretty lighthearted. But does have some dark moments and ominous storylines. This makes sense though, as the original stories by the Brothers Grimm were very dark, usually to discourage kids from bad behavior and to teach a lesson.

i alwyays loved the wonderland kids being able to hear the narrators, but it's so much funnier because everyone else from wonderland pretends maddie's crazy when they can hear it too XD

I feel like if Apple saw what Raven saw in the book she understand why Raven won't sign it and Raven is so selfless she never tells anyone what she saw and is always helping her friends Apple is just selfish

As some other people have suggested, highly suggest you watch the specials. They are part of the story and very important for context (as character development that happened in them affect characters in the story). "Thronecoming" is directly followed by "Spring Unsprung", which is followed by "Way too Wonderland", which then goes to "Dragon Games", and they take place between seasons 3 and 4. And "Epic Winter", while it can be seen during season 4, it fits best with how characters behave after season 4.

Ever after high is truly the best tv show for a doll franchise, the story is unmatched 🤭

Highly recommend to keep watching the show especially the Way to wonderland and Dragon games arcs they are my favorites and made me feel so much emotions

Fun fact, ever after high and Monster High take place in the same universe! There’s a book about the two schools called shadow high, and they were supposed to be many more schools added to the universe

If you like the story then you should read the books. They’re actually really good. They delve deeper into the headmasters reasoning for acting the way he does and flesh out Ravens relationship with her mother. Her family is actually cool. I don’t think they talk about her father in the show, but they talk about him in the beginning of the book and it gives a little bit of context as to why Raven is, like, the only villain who doesn’t want to be evil. Raven also isn’t the only one has an interesting family in the context of their stores, the daughter of Little Red Riding Hood is also in a similar situation. Even the side story books are good. If you were wondering about what happens to the children of these fairytale characters who don’t have major roles in major fairytale stories, then you should check out the side story books. They handle it in a really creative way.

I really want them to make more episodes of this show, it was so so good.

Please, please, please, keep watching this series. Make it a whole series, do like two episodes a week, just keep watching them please. All of your questions and concerns are incredibly valid and DO get addressed in the show. Please keep watching it. Sure it was a show created to sell kids dolls, but it genuinely has such a deep lore and message and so many interesting character dynamics and story arcs.

I hope you will continue watching it, it’s so entertaining! I am glad that Maddie grew onto you, she is great :D Not my favorite character necessarily but one of them for sure. Also hearing your theories is so cool, because SOMETIMES you do hit right on the spot. Not always, but there are moments… You’ll see. But also maybe consider watching 3min episodes too, because there is context that you will miss sometimes. And especially it’s important for characterization. Something that is not really shown in those two bigger episodes is that despite everything all rebels and royals are friends. They do have that FATE thing hanged between them as a center of controversies and do argue about that, but most of the time they still do homework together, solve problems together, party, etc. At least watch the next short one after Legacy Day, because it shows what’s going on right after. Also Apple’s character is… interesting. I see why you dislike her and that’s valid, she is selfish about her destiny, but that’s there short episodes also play their role, because you can see that she actually is a caring person, who works very hard everyday to be a good ruler in a future. Her treatment of Raven is not malicious, it’s mostly closeted. She really just doesn’t fully understand the problem. Anyway, it was a great reaction!! Thank you so much.

25:58 when you said apples thinking “if we all choose our own destinies there’s a chance i might not be queen so fix it” that’s actually kinda her thought process, especially from the books. in the books it’s revealed apple as a child fell in a well and almost drowned, and because of that she decided she absolutely HAS to follow her story, because it guarantees her safety and happy ending. the book makes it clear that for apple, while yes may be selfish and not understanding of raven’s perspective, the snow white destiny is all she’s known and she’s scared of the uncertainty/unknown of the future . that’s why i like the series bc it shows its not just a black and white situation of raven being right and apple being wrong, but both have reasonable perspectives on why they believe the things they believe. but apple absolutely has character development don’t worry !! looking back i can definitely see why people hated her, i used to when i was a kid too, but then when you think about she’s also just a 15 year old who’s scared for her own future (i mean headmaster grimm did say everyone would go poof and raven had no actual evidence that it WOULDNT happen, so apple was understandably a little scared), and she believes this system that has worked for centuries will continue to work if everyone just follows their path, including raven. she really does care for raven, this is just the only way she believes raven can be “happy”, bc it’s the Only way she’s known her whole life (i am apple’s no.1 defender if u couldn’t tell)

as a fun fact in one of the books (I believe legacy day) it says that Raven flips through the storybook of legends and finds a page with a missing signature in it. on the page it gives a summary of the story which is that she would have to try and drown her sister and then get cursed to become ugly as punishment. Therefore confirming that raven wasn't the first to rebel.

Apple has been treated like an absolute Saint by everyone, since the day she was born. She's just never had to care about other people because everyone always bent over backwards for her. She's had an incredibly sheltered and privileged upbringing.

Raven looks in the mirror to see her destiny and realizes that, while her mother was imprisoned for trying to take over the world, she would attempt to do the same thing and succeed. She also put on that lovely cape, which was her mother's, and starts feeling how powerful it is to be in her destiny but also realizes that shed lose all her empathy for other people. Very good series, glad youre enjoying it

One of my favorite things about the series. They use the darker elements of the fairytales. Not all royals have a happily ever after. There are princess who die at the end of their stories, AND THE CRATORS USED THAT!!! It's a huge motivation for one of them. The creators also used the fact that even ones with happily ever afters don't really get them because their kids have to relive the story. Check out the books it dives into it a little more. I recommend the Ever After High Once Upon a Time story collection by Shannon Hale. The author is great. Hunters story cracks me up. This is a really good example of kids media that goes pretty dark while maintaining a light tone.

Just a fun fact though: The whole royals and rebels thing is not just for the heroes and villains Royals are those that want their stories to continue and include some characters that aren't royalty or "good" and Rebels are the ones that want the opposite and do include some that are considered royalty I guess its a play on words for Royal and Loyal

Raven is my personal favourite character

Just so you know this show is based on the original brothers Grimm stories and not the Disney stories, so some things may be confusing.

Imagine if he read the chapter books! There is so much more lore! It’s crazy that so much is let out in the show versus the books!

Is Apple oblivious to a lot of things? Yes. Does she have some good points (that are developed on) ? Also yes. Plus, we did see her attempt to talk to Raven before the ceremony, and they might have had their honest conversation beforehand. I like to think so, but Apple tends to be overwhelming in a conversation so it’s hard to say 😅❤️

I love the fact that the principal and gis brother are called grimm A reference to the iriginal writers of most of these stories the brothers grimm

For the reason why Apple is held so high is cause her mother is the main queen of their world since she’s the first princess movie

The reason that Maddie knows about the Grimm brother in the basement is because she can hear the narators and they mentioned it earlier. Her and the other character from Wonderland have a slightly different relationship with reality.

I just realized that principle Grimm and Giles Grimm are based off of the Grimms' brothers fairy tales! never realized that when I watched the show as a kid :D (mostly because I didn't know what Grimms' Fairy tales was)

(not spoiler free) another thing i want to add though is that this whole arc is a lot more drawn out and detailed in the book- like okay obviously yeah because they had to condense the book into a series but there’s genuinely so much more that goes on in the book. like raven and apple go on a whole expedition together and i just wanted to summarize it here- i think some of these points are later shown in the series but i’m not certain, but it does explain a lot like why milton grimm is so adamant on her signing and all that so anyways the book goes like this; the book starts with raven getting her once yearly “mirror chat” (facetime) with her mother. we find out her mother is essentially in jail in the mirror world, and she tries to give raven a pep talk to encourage her to sign the book. i think here we also find out that ravens mom actually went off script, and poisoned wonderland causing it to be sealed off from the rest of the world (hence why maddie, kitty, lizzie, and the white queen are there they escaped before their home was sealed off). anyways we get to the part in the series that get animated where they arrive to the school apple is dorming with raven. we get to see the dorm party briar talks about, but raven accidentally ends up turning the doves briar had singing into snakes in a fit of rage after being pressed about signing the book again… so anyways that happens and then we get to the rehearsal legacy day which is animated. when raven runs off however, she ends up meeting with dexter charming (the awkward brother of daring charming that asked to sit with raven) who then gives her the idea of looking at the storybook of legends early to see if there were any unsigned pages. he empathizes with raven because since his brother is like the main “prince charming”, the story he’ll get thrown into is a mystery to him, so raven is like “wow i wish we could see the book early and see our destinies early before legacy day” and he’s like “yeah that’s a good idea but you know how my dad is but if you want i can help make a distraction if that would help. so she agrees, and meanwhile we get a glimpse into apple whites schedule where her and briar get paired up for an assignment, and somewhere along the way the teacher says something about them being “mirror images” of their parents, which gives apple the idea of spying on raven to make sure she isn’t up to no good (stalker much?). all the mirrors in ever after are connected, so she ends up getting humphrey (humpty dumpty’s son who’s like a huge nerd) to hack into the mirror network so she can keep tabs on raven. so raven ends up sneaking into the headmasters office to see the book early, though it doesn’t show her nor dexters destiny. but as she’s flipping through the old pages, she notices one page where there’s a missing signature from someone named “bella sister” who comes from this story called “the two sisters”. raven realizes she’s never heard of this story, but becomes curious about what happened to bella. apple sees all of this and later confronts her about it. raven has the idea to try and see if anyone out there remembers the story of bella, and apple relentlessly begs her to take her along, and so they end up visiting like this really old guy who says he doesn’t remember. apple is satisfied with that answer, but raven isn’t and so they end up going to the tea shoppe run by maddie and her dad to try and get more clues and see if maybe bella had any lost possessions or something. maddie is like really good at finding lost things so they ask her and she mentions “the lost and crowned” office, so apple and raven go there and they find a notebook which once belonged to bella sister. the notebook has a drawing of a tree that’s in the enchanted forest, and when they go there they find an old letter in the tree that was drawn. basically the letter is addressed to bella’s sister, saying how she couldn’t sign and ran away to an old cave they used to visit when they were little. apple tries to convince raven that because the sister never found the letter in the tree, they both went poof, but raven is still unsatisfied and wants to go find the caves mentioned and see if bella is still alive. apple reluctantly agrees. the book goes into detail of their adventure and at once point raven has to fake sacrifice apple to a bunch of goblins (apple actually believes it hoping that somehow she turned evil) but of course it was just a plan for them to escape… and they end up going to the cave where they find a skeleton who’s dress and blanket are left rotting and being eaten by moths. in the cave in red paint, it says “i should have signed the book”, and apple is like scared shitless and tries to convince raven that she has to sign, but in the paint raven notices a gnat stuck in the paint and comes to the conclusion that this whole thing was a setup. she says that the gnat would’ve disappeared by then if it was written by bella, and apple and raven argue. apple doubts raven on her expertise in bugs saying how she just wants it all to not be true she’s looking for the tiniest little excuses. this causes raven to accidentally summon a bunch of bugs in a fit of rage and they up running out of the cave and raven reluctantly agrees to sign after apple convinces her saying all the evidence they found was too strong for a single gnat to prove otherwise. when they get back, raven tells maddie the whole thing (and maddie reveals she knew about it all because of the narrators) and offers to help her try to find out more by taking her to “the vault of lost tales”. raven ends up finding a book with their story, and in the margins of the book there’s notes written by both sisters talking about their plans to run away and not sign together, and they left their world through a portal. then this is the whole scene with giles and maddie speaking riddlish now, where giles says that legacy day is a hoax and the book holds no power and all that, then we get to the part where raven doesn’t sign and that’s where the series ends! the book goes on a bit further and goes on to describe the legacy day dance which was like an after party for legacy day that briar still is determined to host even after raven essentially cancelled legacy day. raven ends up crashing it essentially nothing too important but the epilogue is important because we find out the whole thing with the letter, the old man, even the skeleton and paint on the wall was all faked by milton grimm. he found out of ravens plans and tried to make it seem like bella died tragically to discourage raven, but he didn’t take into account the fact that raven ended up finding his brother. so yeah! that’s essentially the whole first book summarized! i know it was a lot but if anyone’s reading this still thank you for reading! the second and third book are amazing as well, which follow the aftermath of legacy day and do more world building and bla bla bla… i cannot recommend this series enough i know it’s just a series made to sell dolls but it’s a series i treasure deeply and adore with all my heart

Apple is definitely selfish and in the wrong here, but I will bring up one thing in her defense: if Raven goes poof, and their entire story ceases to exist, so will Apple. So will Apple's prince charming, the seven dwarves, and possibly Hunter Huntsman (although he also has a second story in Little Red Riding Hood so he might be safe). So Raven is putting more than herself at jeopardy when she makes these choices, since they literally have no idea what will happen if she strays from the path. Also notice I didn't say Daring 😉😏
