In March 2021, during the Online Slapstick Festival in Lockdown, Matt Lucas, known for his work on Little Britain and Doctor Who, Noel Fielding, the eccentric host of The Great British Bake Off and star of The Mighty Boosh with comedian, podcaster and author, Robin Ince, delved into the comedic genius of Laurel and Hardy.

The humour of Laurel & Hardy is timeless. The jokes don't feel out of time so much is transferable to modern comedy. The facial expressions and reactions are a big part of their charm. The fourth wall approach to the viewer probably comes from comedians engaging the audience in stage performances. The characters in themselves are magical and the bigger than life sense of reality in their comedies makes the whole experience both entertaining and otherworldly.

The funniest comedy duo ever. The sceene on the train going to Potsville where they both are in the same top bunk and get tangled up in each others clothes when they were gettin ready for bed was on another level of brilliant. Not a word spoken for 15 mins just silent comedy😂

I’m a teacher and I often show the kids The Piano Movers. It’s wonderful because the kids still get it.

No one comes close when they imitate them . Their choreography, their voices and timing are sublime. Perhaps the film technology of the time adds to the quality . The light is remarkable on sunny days . I think it's because they were masters of their art like Chaplin, Rembrandt mozart and Shakespeare.

I recently saw a clip of one of their films , I apologise not knowing its title but they were on a sloping roof . I have to say the stuntman in this scene was incredible. Oliver's stuntman fell backwards and downwardly on a tiled roof and through the little hatch they used for access to the roof , it is an amasing stunt and worthy of a top award for his craft.

Even in their sound films, there were great swaths of silent parts in them. They weren't afraid to go back to their silent film roots.

Nicely done. Thanks! Although you must have known going in that it would be impossible to discuss L&H for only an hour or so. I have to say, I didn't think the clips were well chosen, and gave too much time to other actors. If you've only got an hour, just focus on the boys and their interactions

They first appeared together in "The Lucky Dog" but not as the Laurel and Hardy characters. The studios were reluctant to use Laurel as an actor because the film technology at the time of their initial pairing made blue eyes appeal pale (Laurel had blue eyes) so they used Laurel to write for them instead (they had tried using heavy mascara on his eyes but it looked bad). Not long after making "The Lucky Dog" a new film stock was developed to overcome this problem so the studio paired them up permanently. Without the technical change we may never have had their comedy!

'The Music Box' steps are still there with a plaque at the base commemorating the award...and the house from 'A Perfect Day' which is exactly how you would remember it from the film...Must sees if you are a vsiting 'Son of the Desert' in LA...just leave your mrs in the car like I did...no SOH...she thought 'Fawlty Towers' was just a bad documentary....From the UK
