The programme includes Shishi (Lion Dance) from the popular classical Noh play Shakkyo (‎Stone Bridge), in which a lion, messenger of Manjusri Bodhisattva, appears at a stone bridge and dances with gorgeous, fragrant peony flowers.
In addition, Yukihiro Isso’s highly-acclaimed Shishi 16, a Lion Dance in modern style, and his brand-new composition with a story by Atsushi Iriki presented by all Noh performers.

@@kairu1079 The dance is not performed according to the play. It‘s modernized and sadly therefore westernized. Horrible to see the culture being abused in this way

"Bastardization" is a little harsh. True, the original features peony stage props, a larger stage, a storyline, and there are two or more lions who dance. The Kabuki version of a lion dance has a different story, is flashier, and features the lion swirling its much longer mane in spectacular fashion.

... Didn't you read the description or linked article? This was created by Japanese creatives and performed by Japanese performers. If anything, it's LESS modernized AND westernized than some of the performances they're doing in Japan! Just look at Yosakoi, a Japanese-made blend of traditional and modern dance and music. Look at their music videos, animations, TV shows, really any of their media and you'd find an even more modernized take of anything Japanese. Because that's the thing: Japan exists in the modern day. It's going to modern regardless.
