RE is showing us what inverse of the theory of evolution looks like. Half a century back, there were these engines which were casted in iron which were producing a jaw-dropping ~32-35 nm of torque, most of which got directly translated down to the wheels. This was until 2002 when the new AVL engines came. Now, these engines had a drop in torque from 32 to 27 in contrast to their predecessors. The piston barrel however remained iron. This again changed when the Unit Construction Engines came into production in 2009. The UCE however was claimed to be producing 28nm of torque on the crank and were putting down a disappointing torque of 18.58 nm to the wheels (source: motorbeam). Now, the level of disappointment has even raised to new greater bars with the J series engines. The claimed torque on the crank is 27nm, and what you get at the wheels, the usable torque, is a deep 16.91 nm of torque (source: motorbeam). The least out of all the previous engines. Now, the funny apart is that RE has done a number of changes to the design of the engine to get more performance out of it. Some were as follows; 1. Swapped from a pushrod valve system to chain-driven one for better efficiency at higher rpm 2. A bigger oil pump for better lubrication 3. Improvement in compression ratio for better engine durability 4. Claimed* better drivetrain for better "usable performance". 5. Introduction of balancer shaft for reduced vibrations 6. Introduaction of air-oil cooled engine technology rather than just the air-cooled one that you get in old ones, for better heat dissipation. These were the changes done which is claimed to be effecting the performance in a positive way. However, there is only a negative impression on all the field except for the vibrations which got contained well at least in the lower revs. They were claiming that the tappets now were not needing that much of a care as the old engines did. However, things only got worse now as the tappets were not getting back to their original form once they were misaligned. What a flaw! You got to live with since it cant be repaired. The performance is gone down deep, and the overall feel is simply not there. I own a cl350 reborn for more than a year and a half now and I can say that it is simply concerning with its engine quality. I always am conscious about getting the engine from not lugging. Lugging. This is a real problem with this bike. If you ride at slow speeds, you engine will be at the brink of lugging. The steeps at which the old CI engines easily climb in 2nd and 3rd gear will be so concerning with the J series engine until you have it on 1st gear. The low-end performance is simply gone. The bike performs better in higher rpm's. Why do you buy a classic 350 if you want to ride in high rpm's? You have other bikes in the market which does the high rpm stuff more gracefully than this bike. The sole reason to get a classic for a true RE enthusiast is to chug along in low rpm's with a tonne of torque which can get you to hill tops with ease, and make you hear that dug dug. The pedigree is gone forever. What are these people doing at their engineering bases! There was once a time when things were just all good and perfect.
