I used to have that phone! Under the front facing camera is not a notification light, it’s a pressure sensitive button for Shortcuts. Also, if you long press the end call button the voice assistant appears. Bounce was iconic
I had this in red for many years. The top right "xpress music" thing is not only a light, it's also a shortcut for the music app. I don't think the barren Ovi Appstore contributed much to the demise of this, we Symbian users installed apps the old fashioned way back then: downloaded shady installer files from the web and sel-signing them on our home PCs. If I remember correctly there was also a CPU speed limit when it came out it only run at 396MHz, but in the software upgrade that enabled kinetic scrolling they unlocked the CPU and it became 434MHz. I used Opera Mini back then so the default Nokia browser was no issue, and it had double the screen resolution of the iPhone which was nice. You could also run the older Symbian apps and games that were designed for a non-touchscreen use, and use a virtual keypad. As for that virtual keyboard: the default setting was a T9 on portrait and a full qwerty in landscape, so basically when you wanted to enter a longer text, you used in landscape, but you could answer a text on the T9 with one hand if you preferred. The reason Nokia used a resistive touchscreen is most likely because it was a mature technology and very cheap with great precision, while capacitive screens were still new, expensive and delicate. The screen was also pressure-sensitive so it wasn't only touch or no-touch, but a level of pressure could be read too, some drawing apps made use of it. It also had a TV-output on the headphone jack, you can use the same cable for it that came with the N95. I think it was an important device for Nokia, because it was the first "no compromise" device for them. Previously you had the "business" phones that had WiFi, the "activity" phones that had a GPS and the "fun, kid-friendly" phones that had media-capabilities, but for the first time you had it all in one package and for a reasonable price. This was my first phone with a GPS. Google Maps was als still in it's infancy back then, so the Nokia Maps app with turn-by-turn navigation and offline maps were a huge thing! And you just barely mentioned Quickoffice, but it was a piece of software that made this phone a computer in a pocket back then, it was not obvious at the time that you can open and edit MS Office files. So I think it was a good phone fo the time. Despite that: I used it for about 2.5 years and it was my least favorite Nokia for some reason. As you said, it felt cobled-together, and sluggish, mainly because Nokia was notorious for only including the bare minimum amount of RAM needed to make the phone function. They did it all the time: a good hardware shot in the foot by not enough RAM. I think if Nokia simply put double the RAM in all their phones between 2005 and 2010 they'd have remained a key player because their phones would have felt more fluid and refined... Thanks for the review!
I remember tilting the phone to bring in the keyboard. Before replying I calculated long my reply will be and then should I tilt the phone for that or use the T9. This was also my first phone which had support for stereo bluetooth headset, I bought neckband style headset from Motorola to use along with these.
My brother bought this phone for his 1st Nokia phone, and he's coming from sony Ericsson K800, I was pretty excited back then to try this phone since I also have mine but other model Nokia N79, and I still use my this phone as my secondary phone just for call only, battery pretty good for listening to music and I still never change battery even once since 10 years ago
My first phone back in 2009. Loved playing music, incredible camera with dual led flash, the bounce game, and tons of memories. I literally can't thank my dad enough for this beautiful phone.
I remember having this just for sensor car turning in game and roller coaster game to fancy around my friends, man this brings so much memories I've been missing ❤️
I still own it, though it has been sitting in a cardboard box in my store room for the past 5 years. Your video suddenly inspired me to take it out and use it once again.
Remember it was featured in JJ Abrams Star Trek? Car mode with it outsized buttons. It lead the way for modern car nodes. I loved mine. And my Express Twist to the Music. That came with a 1GB!! Memory card! The best keyboard of all the Nokia's I owned was between the Nokia E7 and the 9300. The 9309 was really a mobile version of a laptop with build in office.
I still have one of these and remember being blown away compared to my own when a friend got this back when it was out. I had the X3 at the time. I'd love to see a video about it's lesser brothers and sisters in the 5000 series of touch screens as I love your format of videos
I have both and i love this phone. This is my first touchscreen i have ever had and yeah i agree. At first. Is kinda like "phone with pressing screen like Other Nokia Phone before". But, after the update. The phone is kinda smooth and better. I also love the stereo speaker and sound quality of this device too. But yeah, the camera sucks though Overall. I enjoy using this phone. I really hope Nokia will do another Xpress Music phone which is music oriented phones with editing music app. I think it will sell like hotcake
I had this and loved it back then. It was so pretty and different from any other phone I had up until that time. I remember looking at it a lot in awe lol! Crazy how fast tech evolved.
I still have both the 5233 and 5800XM. Absolute legends, these two. Everybody had to have one of these phones back in the day. If you had any one of these, you were just cool, bottomline. And of course, I have the Red 5800XM because duh, XpressMusic = Red and black. I still have my 5130XM and that is also in red ❤️ Love these phones man, I miss these peak Nokia days so much 🥲
I like the black version. One of my friends owned a Chinese knockoff version of this phone (Instead of XpressMusic, it said MusicXpress 🤣), but I really wish HMD Global would look into bringing back with that XpressMusic line for diehard audio fans though, and similarly, Sony would throw back out some 'Walkman' phones too, ans Motorola would have the iTunes music app equipped on certain phones. I miss those days!!! Those of us who had those phones from the 00's, would kill or be killed for that nostalgic feeling once again! They should look into reigniting that feeling to get a huge grab back of their fans! If HMD Global uses their head, they can even come out with a line of Nokia XpressMusic Bluetooth headphones and/or earbuds!!! Thanks for the vid, and the nostalgia!
My brother owned one back then. I remember it coming in a big box with a lot of goodies in it like software CDs, an awesome set of earphones, a stylus that had a phone stand in it, stickers etc
I actually loved the Nokia 5800. The music reproduction through its stereo speakers and through headphones was stunning for its time. And yes, all of the other features (or lack there off) were the beginning of the end for Nokia.
This was my first phone as a kid (i didn't even get to have a sim and just played games or listened to music on it). There was a pre loaded song that i loved but accidentally deleted. It went something like "we keep running around, we run out of town and i don't wanna go home". If someone can help me find that song it'll be a huge help. Also there was a pre loaded game here where we had a trail of colored balls that kept moving towards the end. And we had to shoot a ball from a canon to remove the balls off the trail by matching 3 of the same color. We could choose characters that had special powers- one character could like freeze the balls, one could summon earth/dust that destroyed some of them, one had fire. It was a fun game. If someone can find it, that'll be a huge help too.
I can't put links here but you can try searching RU-vid for "Nokia 5800 preloaded songs" there are a few playlists. The games can be found if you enter a similar search in Google 😉
Hey Nice video !. I managed to download the lastes firmware for my Nokia 5800. currently using v60.0.003 using JAF setup etc. it works after the update realy smooth.
Same here too 🥳 all the tools are still out there but they are getting harder to find. I just love this old phone, it's served me so well over 14 years. But obviously I had to buy 2 more for spare part lol. I've even modified the buttons so that they can never fall out again haha, it wasn't easy 😅
This was my favourite phone when I got growing up, the selection of music being able to be downloaded was mad Oh god the Bounce game brings back memories ahhh
Wow i had this in 2008, it was fun using it! iPhone and Samsung came out with a way superior OS then it was sadly the download fall of Nokia. Great memories using Nokia phones from late 90's to Mid 2000's!
This was back in the day when manufacturers really gave thought on the designs of a phone. I had the blue one and loved it. It came with a rubber case and an extra stylus shaped as a guitar pick.
The 5800 was the second to the last Nokia ive owned (the Nokia C1-01 had that honor of last) and my first touch screen "smart phone". Used mine from 2009 to 2014... its last year relegated to media player duty. The interface, settings and look of the software is simple that i setup all the samsung phones anf tablets (add the Asus and Acer tablets) to look like the symbian s60 5 (still have the nokia wallpapers too). My 5800XM was a black with a silver stripe. Mine didnt have the Bounce game (must have deleted it in the unboxing).
You have no idea how much i love this phone the only reason i remembered it it's because i bought the zfold 4 and when it's folded it reminds me off my old nokia phone 📱, when it's folded
I moved from a weird keyboard layout Symbian Siemens SX1 over an N73 with TomTom, Opera etc. to the 5800 and loved the large screen and yes resistive touch was a bit unsmooth, but hey I couldnt effort an iphone so what. I stayed with Symbian until I moved to Android. Was one of my favorite phones. ❤️
Same with me, had an eye for iPhone but bought Nokia thinking its as good as an iPhone but from a known company. Moved over to Android 2 years later and stayed with it. This actually got me thinking that had this phone not launched I would have bought an iPhone sooner or later and would have never tasted Android. This phone basically helped Android built its userbase, keeping a great bunch of users on hold by offering touch experience for android to come in and offer a decent OS. What are your thoughts?
you have to get used to it for using this phone , once you're ready you can do tons of stuffs in it , it has great sound , good camera and app support , you can customise it's font's , use transition animation (some advance level system tweaks) , what i was more fascinated that using ovi maps that time , and i was surprised to see that it was more accurate than google maps and works with 2g internet
My first ever smartphone. Gifted by my parents after I finished elementary school, and using it through high school until 2012, where I switched to the BlackBerry Storm 9550
My first smartphone can miss the times when I could make custom firmware for the Nokia 5800 to remove bloatwares and add speed performance and port features that are available on other Nokia S60v5 such as the Nokia C6-00, Nokia 5530, Nokia 97
Back then, the Apple AppStore had just released. I still don't get why people complain about the lack of apps on Symbian/Windows when the original iPhone came with no app store or no way of side loading any apps, so you'd get only what Apple gave you and you could do nothing about it. I never had the 5800, but I had some slight variations: 5530 and 5230, both great. For me however, the best platform still is Windows Mobile which believe it or not still works well and it's still being used to this day on certain barcode scanners and other industrial machines. I had a HTC P3600 which was ages in front of Apple. It had 3G, the ability to install apps, change registry entries, homescreen (called Today screen). On the iPhone you can't even change your homescreen today. They'll probably "innovate" that in about 10 years. As if, we wouldn't have been able to do it on Android as well since forever.
This was my second phone ever, afte the 5320 xpressmusic. Loved it, used it to listen to music to such an extent, it was problematic. The camera was ridiculously good for the time. I love that phone
This was the first (and one of the only 2) phone that I bought new... There were so many things done right with it! But also so many things that were just a problem, specially with getting apps for Symbian and the OVI things... The other thing that for me was a big downside was the lack of physical music control buttons as the previous XpressMusic phones had...
This is my first touch phone ❤❤ when was in 2012 and completed my secondary grade with good grade. As a resulting my elder brother gift this phone...so that feelings like was like get moon
I had one at the age of 13 💙 my brother gifted me. It was the first 3G phone i had and No one my friends ware having a device like that with big touchscreen display and a touch pen we go together out side near town to get 3g network 😍 It was beautiful days with fast internet connectivity to download movies and 😉 etc…😋
2006-2009 Phones: Here you go, the phone, a charger, a brick, a pair of earjacks, a collar for your dog, a pen, a house, thanks for buying our product 2017-2023 phones: here you go, the phone and acharger, now fuck off
I literally cry when i think about how amazing these phones were back then... downgrade as compared to now obviously but the 5800 being my first phone has a special place and i'd still give up my present phone for a brand new 2009 version of the 5800... because, why not... it was a cult phone...
if you click on the little window beside the XpressMusic label (underneath the front facing camera) a shortcut menu would appear, atleast that's what i remember
I had this or a similar phone. Unfortunately the screen cracked terribly. I had lots of issues. The NAvigation App was not working after about half an year. The WhatsApp App from OVI was shut down after a few months. But somehow i loved this phone. My most favorite Nokia I owned was the N95 (unfortunately also this screen broke, but in a weird way. My Mums N8 was the last Nokia I used. It did not last long but it was cool. After that the REAL Smartphone era began for us and... well. Changed our lifes a lot
This unlocked a forgotten memory . My Dad had this phone and I would always play Bounce and downloaded gifs of dragonball and sonic characters transformations
I had this phone! It was my very first good phone, and my second phone in total. I liked the lightweight, the very good and loud speakers, and the amazing battery life. Unfortunately the display broke just after two years, right when the guarantee expired. I tried to replace the touchscreen, but it didn't work out. I switched to Sony.
