Nokia G22 - Long-Term Review

In the beginning, I was really attracted to its battery-changing abilities because I was so tired of glued-shut phones. If you had the phone on airplane mode at night and a lot during the day using wifi calling when possible and shutting off every other battery draining ability i.e refresh rate, haptic function, etc, you could get between 2-3 days worth out of a battery before you needed to recharge also thanks to the phones AI-battery saving ability that might have helped. Now, I have discovered that Nokia G22 does discharge quite a lot faster. Nokia has a super saver battery mode (which the other phone did automatically), which means basically that when the phone is idle it won´t use a lot of power and I need to set the phone again on super save each time I use it. So what it ends up to, is that instead of renewing the battery 1 time more so I can fully appreciate the full life of the phone, I will instead end up buying and changing the battery 2-3 times because the battery-saving software is not good enough. After all, the business wants to earn more on battery sales. Fairphone is probably the only one that fixed the battery-saving issue, but they charge a lot also. In the end, I want a phone that I can fully use during its lifetime with decent interchangeable batteries, or new batteries that will outlive the phone's lifetime ( maybe in 5-10 years). The industry is going the wrong way with its glued shut phones.

It’s such a shame that Nokia branded devices might not be produced from next year. Unfortunately HMD global is in major debt with FIH. For those of you who don’t know, that’s the R&D and project subsidiary of Foxconn. FIH is a major investor in HMD and have had to write of debt relating to production, funding and parts. They have cited is increasing difficult for them to receive payments and has entered a phase to decide if they will file to recover assets and contractual payments, or work with HMD as a going concern. So all you Nokia fans, brace yourselves. It’s very likely they will fold if increasing targets are missed or not met.

Repairability is a great thing. But do they still cripple their phones? I had a 3.1 back in 2018/19 which started well, but became unusable after about half a year because Nokia decided to kill * all * apps running in the background. It became unusable, basically e-waste after less than a year.

Is there a better option for an easily repairable phone?

Worst thing about this phone is the screen: dull, slow and draggy. A 720 screen in 2023? Really? Pity you can't change that yourself!

How can you not recommend this phone? Like are you standing from a flagship point of view (which is really a not clever thing on you) or from a budget longevity point of view? This is a highly recommended phone basic users. When is the last time you saw a user-repairable phone? This is a revolutionary phone taking the planned obsolescence greed.

Extremely bad overheating on charging, overheating on calls, bugs, battery discharge rapidly avoid this phone, stops all the time although i bought it in june 2024, maybe a factory problem, but hmd assistance are not reactive at all leaving me without a phone for repair instead of replacing it, camera is bad moves to focus never seen such a bad performance and experience, the voice not top...avoid it

This is an awful phone. Worst IPS screen I've seen in a while. It does technically have a 90Hz refresh rate, but the CPU is so bad that the phone lags too much for it to be useful. The camera is a potato. You'd be better off getting a used Galaxy A70. It's older, but It costs less and it's a much better phone in every measurable way. A Huawei Mate 10/Mate 10 Pro are also really good options.
