NOMAD SCULPT - creating joints for 3D Print
This video is a summary of the main techniques used to create joints for a little 3D character that can be 3D printed. Articulated joints take many forms and this one allows 360 degree rotation, snaps into place and is permanent.
It forms part of a new update to our Nomad Beginners course with a whole new module all about how to create a vinyl toy. Well, not actually a vinyl toy, but something we can create ourselves in 3-D print using Nomad sculpt.
The update is 2 1/2 hours long and contains 15 lessons covering how to block out the character with all the necessary details, paint it in Nomad and Procreate and how to get that into augmented reality.
The second half of the new update covers how to prepare that model to be articulated and then 3-D printed, and those sections cover scaling, how to make sure your model has planes to allow articulation then how to add joints that can snap together, permanently rotate, and stay fixed in place. From there we take a look at how to prepare it for print, slice it and add supports.
It will be a welcome addition for anyone who wants to take their Nomad sculpt character work a little bit further, and there’s another expansion of all comprehensive nomad beginners course.

I’ve had a blast making this little guy. I’ve ending up with loads of test models so I’m gonna have fun painting this weekend.

Very helpful video. While watching how you struggled a little bit popping in the head I was thinking that maybe the head of the joint should be slightly rounded so it would get inside the hole in an easier way.

Glad you’ve added it to the beginners class. I’ve built an interest in building BJDs and other toys, so this joint type is great to know about.

Might I recommend warming the prints, either in hot water or with a heat gun/hair dryer. Resin prints become more flexible when they're warmed up, so they should snap together easier and become rigid again after it cools

This is the most helpful video on joints I have seen ever! What a great job!

I haven’t tested this size on a filament yet but as long as the supports don’t make a mess I’m sure it would be fine. Larger scale would help for filament

Thank you so much for adding this to the course. You’re the best! I have a question. Did you used like the common resin or a hardened one? I wonder if the pegs will brake with “normal” resin

This is only for resin models?

I’m surprised you don’t go about this with having everything as a hollow, then having individual pins that drop into both ends. So if the pin doesn’t break you don’t have to re print the entire part just work the broken pin out and place a new one. I know a company ( Squadt) that does it the same way you are showing , but it always kind of puzzled me.

This is very much a beginners course and is just one option. I’ve tried a myriad of ways over the years but I change my thinking all the time with experience.

What resin did you use for this articulated bear ? Or rather ideally what do you recommend to minimise likelihood of the joint pin snapping ?

What resin you used?

The connection looks a bit flimsy, to be honest. I'd imagine that the Big head and the long arms would snap off quite easily. But for a Prototype, just to demonstrate how it moves, it would probably be enough.
@SouthernGFX
@SouthernGFX 11 месяцев назад
Could well be. Over time it would definitely go brittle at this size I imagine. Learning the process is the important thing and then being able to take it further in your own designs. I snapped loads as I was testing the length of pegs and overall size.

Can this be applied to pla? Since resin is a little softer and more bendable than pla
@torq21
@torq21 4 месяца назад
It's possible. I've made a number of projects with similar style plugs. You have to get the dimensions and print angle right so that you have enough flexibility while still being strong enough.
