lol, Hey mark....I think I first heard about this knot from you years ago. I never looked back. I didn't realize you had abandoned it because of a loss of confidence in it. I have had a couple "unexpected" break offs with it, mostly because I think I just casted to many times and failed to inspect it enough. I found that doing a mini bulb melt on the mono/fluoro tag end stops slippage, and or a dab of crazy glue. I have the glue with me always anyhow for keeping plastics on my hooks.
I know that there's a fair few ways to tie this knot, all resulting in the same thing but I noticed someone finishing it in a slightly different way. Instead of the last few half hitches just going along the mainline and cutting the leader, the leader was sliced with a long tapered end and the half hitches just went along both the leader and mainline with the leader gradually getting thinner until the leader was fully covered and a few more half hitches went on just the mainline to finish off. This looked like a good way to finish it when you would winding the knot back through the guides. It made a very smooth transition and there was no sudden end or lump at the leader end.
Joshua Fifis that sounds very precise but perhaps overkill. After viewing hundreds of variations Ive sort of pieced together the following method and counts. braid straight and wind the leader around it, easier. Every 5 winds (ea side) gather braid tight repeat till 20 and no more. At this point tie 1 half hitch and with tensioners (pencils if nothing else handy) lock braid bite into leader. 5 more half hitches (same direction) around both lines. 6 more half hitches (braid only) then a finishing knot of an 8 wrap uni knot which is "unravelled" so as to tighten down as whipping when slack removed. this guy is correct I think to suggest all clipping happens after knots all complete and two tensionings have been done. I gather you are into knots too. Im going on my 1st yellowtail amberjack trip down south in 3 weeks some say fg some say pr. Any thoughts? I heard pr knot is supposed to be stronger. Am I overthinking it?
