We're expanding our line of lead screw motors actuators to include not only our external versions, but now to include the Non-Captive family as well. Different diameters, different leads that you can get for the screws and things that fill out the full range of the product. What makes the Non-Captive actuator unique, is that it allows the screw to pass completely through the motor. People will use this in places where they need shorter stroke applications. The screw ends are typically fixed, and then the motor will be what moves, so you'll mount your load here, your payload, your gripper, or whatever it is your moving. You'll mount to the motor and then that provides the motion. You'll notice also that there is a little bit of axial motion in the screw and you'll often see these with some sort of linear guidance attached to it that will stiffen the entire assembly and then increase your load capacity as well. The screws are rolled right here at PBC Linear we hold tolerances of three-thousandths of an inch per foot as far as the lead accuracy. That's three times better than the published specifications of leading competitors. In Addition to that, you'll notice this nut here has a band around it. A spring around there, most Non-Captives don't have any king of anti-backlash control Where here, with this band, you get continuous force closing the nut down onto the screw and you get anti-backlash capabilities that are 2 to 3 times better than competitive products. The result is a system that's going to give you the highest repeatability and highest accuracy in a Non-Captive actuator. If the screw is many meters long and slightly curved can you use it as a low backlash drive to move around a really long guidance track?

Thank you for your interest in our product. No, in general, you cannot use a straight lead screw many meters long to move a substantial load around a really long, straight guidance track at any substantial speed. When you write “many meters”, I assume you mean 3 meters or more in length. As lead screws get longer, their maximum rotational speed becomes lower and lower to avoid the screw’s critical speed. Also, as a lead screw gets longer, it can only support a smaller and smaller load before buckling would occur. A lead screw several meters long would be limited to an extremely low load and an extremely low rotational speed. If you go to our website and review our catalog for lead screws, you will find more detailed explanations of critical speed and buckling and charts showing the allowable values. Any potential applications should be checked to make sure they are within the recommendations. Theoretically, you could have a three meter long lead screw with almost zero load, rotating extremely slowly, and the lead screw would work. But such applications are so rare and unique that PBC Linear does not generally offer lead screws beyond a length of 69 inches (1750mm). Hopefully, that answers your question... If not, or if you have other questions, feel free to reach out to us at 800-962-8979.

@@PBCLinear Thanks! that was a really informative answer

@@PBCLinear Well, in a non captive application the lead screw is not rotating, so your argument building on critical rotational speed will not hold. However, provided you bend the screw moderately enough to not desturb the thread and nut fit, you will introduce a stiffness problem as the force vector will not point along the lead screw's axis any more and apply a nasty bending moment to the screw. Further the load's mass will play a big role as you get a mass spring system with low resonance frequency, too weak to meet any accuracy requirements.

Hello, wanted to know, why do we need bearings while the lead screw is attached to the coupler and stepper motor, isn't the stepper motor and the coupler plus the housing, enough for the stability of the lead screw or in other words, what is the purpose of the bearing ? to cnc router ?

Hello Triumf... I understand your question. The video is used for marketing purposes to show a non-captive lead screw and motor. What looks like bearing blocks in the video are actually blocks that hold the lead screw stationary. There are many ways a non-captive lead screw system can be configured. In this example, the lead screw is held stationary and the motor forms part of the carriage which moves back and forth guided by a linear bearing and rail. I hope this answers your question. Please see the PBC Linear website, www.pbclinear.com, for more information about such components and systems.

I want to use traverse motion in length of 160 mm in speed of 0 to 250 meter per minutes to wind the yarn in Spinning machines without any junk. Is it possible?

could it be produced in small sizes ?! about 1cm lenght and 3 or 4 cm of shaft
@PBCLinear
@PBCLinear Год назад
Those sizes would be too small. 5cm would be the minimum for the screw length.

It's Not all for Non-captive. Stepper motor goes back and forth is Not a wise usage But it's somehow similar to a Hub motor.
