NON/DISNEY CROSSOVER TUTORIAL: Masking

Hi everyone! Today, I'm making a rather special video. A tutorial! I've wanted to make a video for Non/Disney crossovers (I use two Disney movies in this tutorial, but it applies to Non Disney movies too) for a while! I'm sorry if some things are hard to understand, don't be afraid to ask me questions in the comments if there are things that aren't clear!
This tutorial is dedicated to masking. I'm considering making another one for costume changes (like swapping outfits or creating new costumes from scratch. But that will be for another time!

this is the most comprehensive and useful tutorial i have ever seem for crossover editing, omigosh. the captions, the timestamps, the examples all being for one crossover and not just random scenes- this is so much work! you did an amazing job, i wish this video was around when i started editing a few years ago!

This is a very helpful tutorial with some great tips I didn't even know about! It must have taken a while to make the final 20 second clip look believable. So much editing and re-watching to make sure it flows. You're right that you need to have fun to do this -- otherwise the process would be extra annoying, haha.

Thank you so much! I’m glad you found my tutorial useful. That 20 seconds took me about? Maybe an hour and a half? So it wasn’t that bad. But there’s a lot of maskings that take far longer than that, so yes, it takes fun and a lot of patience to do these!

Hahaha you’re welcome! Honestly you could also do this with only After Effects (for masking) plus maybe Windows Movie Maker or some other program like that. It would be less intuitive, but it’s an alternative!

That’s good! I’m not familiar with that app, but if it works for you, go for it! This is just my workflow, video editing works in other programs :)

Also, do you need to buy both Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects to edit in them? And do you need a mouse to use the Rotobrush Tool? I hope that I can do the same things you did here when I get the apps.

It’s easier to edit with both of them, but you could use Sony Vegas Pro with After Effects! I did this long before I got Premiere Pro and, while less intuitive, it’s doable. And yes, I edit with a mouse! Though you could use a laptop touchpad too, I did it once! Use the workflow that’s available to you and you prefer :)

How do you get the clips from the movies? Where do you download them from?

Hi! I use OBS Studios while watching movies (say, on Disney+ or Netflix or on DVDs or whatever) to record them. It takes a while (you have to watch the entire movie in one go) but the quality is great and the file size is really small! Highly recommend.

For this crossover, did you use Adobe Premiere Pro or Adobe After Effects? Because they look very similar, but you should've at least used only one of them.

I always use both PP and AE in tandem. I use Premiere Pro to build the “skeleton” of the video, aka finding all the clips and making them fit with the music, and then I imported the clips into After Effects to composite them all together in one scene or frame. Hope this helps! :)

Don’t be discouraged. You know, I started making videos using Sony Vegas Pro! It doesn’t really compare with After Effects because they serve different functions. SVP is like Premiere Pro most of all, a video editing program, with a few of After Effects’ special effects functionalities. You could work with both SVP and AE, but I highly recommend the dynamic link between AE and PP :)

@@DuskPShermanWallaby123 Yeah Premiere gets some getting used to. It has a bit of a learning curve, though I learned it all through RU-vid tutorials. What you might have to do is build your video in SVP, render each clip/layer, and open those individually in After Effects. That’s what I used to do. Or maybe build your video, render the whole thing into one file (and do the same for each layer) and open that in AE. Then you can re-cut your clips and use that. It takes a while, but it’s good practice. Good luck!
