I love books where the author focuses on something they tried out for a while. Kind of like self-help memoir. Sometimes this ventures into going abroad and learning about new places or health/mental health and sometimes it's just trying out different ways of home life. I guess memoirs with a discovery element would be the "trope".

I loved this. Definitely worth trying some nonfiction books to expand what you know. My favorites are usually in almost any topic but with readability. The more the book reads like a novel or story, the better. It draws more people to read about subjects they may not have explored previously.

I'm a little late to the party but I have a few books that you mentioned that I want to read I want to read Flannery O'Connor and hunger which I heard a lot about. I write memoir and I have to say there is an awful lot of Naval gazing. I think the problem with the writer is that they're too close to the situation. I have to wait a long time before I can write about trauma. You have to heal before you can write a traumatic memoir. Isle of nonfiction but my favorite genre is mystery and Thriller because it takes me out of my life and is true escapism. I'm not into Christian theology but I do read Jewish Jewish books and I recommend the garden of emuna. Emunah kind of means faith but more intense. Really liking your Channel

I love narrative nonfiction, especially of the historical variety. Two of my favorites are The Boys in the Boat and Killers of the Flower Moon.

You may have read ‘At the Dark End of the Street’ by Danielle McGuire, but if not I recommend the book highly. It reframed for me the work/struggle/fight AfAmer women went through regarding their right to assert and protect their personal autonomy in middle of last century. Really enjoyed this discussion!!!

I like history essays that are focused more on social history/everyday life (not like: Story of That War, but more like "how That War impacted life"). I really liked "Fashion Victims: The Dangers of Dress Past and Present" about fashion history and how fashion LITERALLY KILLED people in 19th/early20th century, or things like "A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome" by my favourite documentarist Alberto Angela-- I'm really fascinated by history/social history, but I'm not fond of dry, essay-like style. I don't know if this made sense. Edit: I didn't really like "Come As You Are" much, I found the style cutesy, condescending and kinda treating the reader as if they were stupid. Edit2: oh and I really really really loved "Jane Austen at Home" by Lucy Worsley, a biography of Jane Austen in relation to the houses she lived in (but generally, I love Lucy Worsley's documentaries)

Agreed, I tend to be much more on the social/cultural history end of things than the "then this happened, and this happened, and this important guy said this" variety

I enjoy narrow niche nonfiction, Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone was was riveting and the Billionaire’s Vinegar was fun even though I was reading it for a project.Great video

I’m interested if you read much translated Japanese fiction like Murakami or Banana Yoshimoto? Murakami wrote a fantastic autobiography exploring his life through how he writes and running called What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.

Not so much, no... I'm a little leery of Murakami tbh so not sure if I'll end up giving him a try

true crime stories told by the detectives are my favorite ones... it is funny because in fiction, I don't like mysteries told this way...

Hi. New subscriber here. I really enjoyed this video. I come from an evangelical background too, largely prosperity gospel, but also very influenced by Southern Baptist gender roles. I've noted down several books from this video to read and also I look forward to watching more videos from you.

Have you read Sexism and God Talk by Rosemary Radford Reuther? I loved that book so much as an undergrad student, no idea if if holds up at all though. I tend to stay away from nonfiction books just because it feels too much like work, which is weird because I do like pop science type podcasts....

Thanks for this, it 'did what it said on the tin' and helped me to understand my own non-fic tastes better. I have to say, that a fair amount of the books you read are of interest to me so I definitely get some of my non-fic TBR from you. I just need to actually pull my finger out and read some of the narrative stuff as I'm so lazy about it! TFS :)

Loved this! My favourite genre has to be science/medical non-fiction (think Emperor of All Maladies, the Hot Zone/Crisis in the Red Zone, etc.) and memoirs. I recently finished We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir by Samra Habib, and really really enjoyed it. I just started An Uninhabitable Earth and the first 20 pages alone have me terrified! (But enjoying it and the writing nonetheless)

Hello, Mara! Have you read or watch Spotlight? I'd like to read the book, but I've watched the movie several times and it's almost like watching a documentary. I'd love to find more books like that, so I'm going to try Catch and kill because the matter of the book interesting me, thank you! E.

I actually made a whole video comparing the book & movie! Long story short, I'd recommend the movie over the book, but the book is still worth reading

I haven't read a ton of non-fiction, but I seem to prefer books that deal with nature/disease. I've read a couple of autobiographies and have really enjoyed them - a couple I've really enjoyed this year are Educated and Wishful Drinking (Carrie Fisher reads it herself and it's fabulous). True crime has been kinda meh for me. I've liked them okay, but I'm not sure it's for me.
