I love fallout, it's the only reason I clicked to watch - As you started watching and reading the TV add on the TV in the first video I had a thought! After I cleared the smoke out of my room I realized that I have come to take so much for granted as a gamer (my mom says she washed my new T-shirt and the stain is indeed, gone). For example - the details you picked up on, I take all of these for granted (I'm aware they exist but I already have a formed impression of the lore/setting) and don't need to consider the impact the opening has (this is universally true where every new product launch has trailers, youtube for spoilers etc). You're reactions are things I don't get to do anymore with a franchise I love! So Thank you for sharing what I had lost.

16:57 key point here - this is the "divergence point" for the alternate history of the Fallout universe. America started using atomic energy in everything rather than shying away, and in doing so also ended up passing over microcomputers. (And technically transistors) Around our time (2022) American society was still mostly a fifties dixieland style culture, and uses fission and even fusion power, they have powerful machines, but any "computers" they have are primitive, clunky machines still using vacuum tubes and punch cards. For complex tasks, in lieu of microcomputers, they use transplanted human brains (mostly from death row convicts)

I think one of the biggest reasons that "gamers" image hasn't changed much from the sweaty neck beard in his moms basement is for two big reasons. One is that we don't care that much about the perception of the people who don't participate in our hobby, as long as they don't try to tell us that what we do is hurting others or is morally reprehensible. Two, I think that the major media companies that used to dominate entertainment continue the trope on purpose because they are losing to video games as a medium to make a profit, and they don't understand how to appeal to a group of people that don't put up with bullshit from the people selling them their entertainment as much as others do. If a game is bad or does something we hate, WE'LL TELL YOU. Companies don't like that, they want people to consume and shut up. So they would rather have people be peer pressured in to not trying those mediums of art so they can keep the bottom line.
@frieza65

Fallout 1 and 2 are perhaps THE best examples of how to do player freedom and agency, and give players options. There's one quest in particular that blew my mind in the first game. You are sent to rescue the daughter of a village elder from a group of raiders who kidnapped her. Your options to rescue her are: 1. Kill everyine in the camp (If you made your character a good fighter) 2. Sneak in and try to sneak her out (If you made your character stealthy) 3. Buy her as a slave (If you made enough money) 4. Convince the leader to fight you in a duel over her (If your character is good in unarmed combat) 5. Intimidate the leader into letting her go (If your speech skill is high enough) 6. If you happen to play a male character, and you happen to find a leather armor and wear it, the leader of the raiders will get confused because you look just like his deceased father. If your character's intelligence is hight enough, he will notice, and you will get a special dialogue option to play along. If your character's speech skill is high enough, it works. Then you can just tell your "son" to release her and he'll listen.

If you ever wanted to play a game in the series, Fallout: New Vegas would be the best from a story perspective since it touches on a lot of very interesting ethical concepts. The original game in 97 was a masterpiece made with heart. It was an isometric (top-down) turn-based game, but it was inspirational and filled with humor. The second Fallout was made in the same vein, but Interplay was on it's last legs. When Bethesda launched Fallout 3 as a first-person shooter, the game lost a lot of its true vision along with most of its heart, but the games were still good, just in a different way. the original voice for the "War Never Changes" is Ron Perlman, he did a few of the Fallout games, I don't think he did it for Fallout 4. One of the coolest easter eggs in the Fallout games is in Fallout 2, the direct sequel to the first video you watched. In Fallout 2, there is a random encounter in the wasteland that has what looks like a Stargate (big metal circle gateway thing) and if you use it, you find yourself in an empty vault, and the only thing you can interact with is a computer, and you cannot leave. Once you touch the computer, you get a message that basically says you broke the vaults water control chip and then you are back in the wasteland. this is a direct reference to the first game, where the whole point of the game was to find a replacement water chip.

Fallout has a lot of lore that deals with ethical questions and also displays the cost of progress in the name of scientific discovery and patriotism. The vaults themselves are not as they appear. Most are scientific experiments. There are a few control vaults (ones that operate as advertised) but the rest involve horrific scientific, social, political experiments. One particularly horrific vault was Vault 75 in Fallout 4. When the dwellers first arrived in the vault, the parents were separated from their kids and the parents were immediately executed. The children were then subjected to experiments in testing in physical and mental strength. Those who were too weak were killed. The strongest were "graduated" by having their DNA and organs harvested for experimentation and reproduction. Those who were intelligent were recruited in to the science team.

Being a writer, I think, helped you quickly grasp that well-written stories are key and visuals are a tool. This game (Fallout 2) is a roll-playing-game (RPG,) that was renowned for the story-telling, dialog, and tough choices the player had to make. Those choices had a real impact on the outcome of the game. Newer releases departed further and further from that story-telling aspect and became more and more about first person shooting and cool gadgets. When you explore the various dialog interactions of Fallout 4, you will find that each dialog option still goes in a linear direction with no real divergence of the story line. I think the game canon suffered because of that.

As for how the games connect together lore-wise and story-wise, the end of Fallout 1 leads right into Fallout 2, and sorta sets up the early days of the NCR and gets into the Enclave, kind of a mix between the old world US government and the Illuminati. Then Fallout 3 starts, which is focused around Washington, DC, really the first time we got to see the East coast, and is about us trying to find our dad after he leaves us in the Vault we grew up in. Then New Vegas happens, then Fallout 4, which technically starts before the Great War, but the majority of the game is post-Great War, after your family gets cryogenically frozen and woken up when someone steals your son from you.

@ 5:55 "I'd watch this movie! Is there a movie?" Well, there will be a series on Prime (I think it is) made by the creators of Westworld. It was announced in July 2020 with a short clip similar to this one, with the classic Fallout-style war propaganda, the Vault-Boy and other famous icons from the franchise. The camera kept panning out and we get to hear screaming and gunfire just before it all ends. Supposedly the script-writers got a deal that they would be paid full even if the script was utter crap and woud not be made, so Prime is fully invested it would seem. Not seen any articles about casting, shooting, possible script-angles or when it will air, but with Wheel of Time around the corner, Lord of the Rings coming next year supposedly, Fallout will probably be a while.

I know playing video games is a bit sad but it gives you great moments. In Fallout 4 I was flying in a Vertibot and saw a battle on the ground between Super Mutants and Gunners so I asked the pilot to land. Suddenly it turned into a massive battle because all 15 of my Settlers from Jamaica Plain had come over to lend a hand ! It was real Michael Bay stuff and afterwards they all walked back to Jamaica Plain.

Modern media always presents gamers as the stereotype you describe. The truth is they come in all shapes and sizes. I’m a 55 year old Project Manager that’s been gaming since the 80s, I have friends that are gamers who are lawyers, doctors and one’s a marketing manager for a casino. One guy in our online group is a 22 year old farmer from Tasmania. All ages, all walks of life, they certainly don’t live in a basement. I surf and my main passion is fishing on my boat (when I’m not playing Fallout 4, haha).

Fallout New Vegas was supersuccesfull mainly because it was appealing to the plot tropes and clishe from the "classical dilogy" of fallout games (# 1 and #2). The game itself was developed by the team formed by ex-employes of the game design studio, that developed Fallout 1 and 2 (Interplay), and, of course, the role of Chris Avellon, "the father" of all the Fallout lore and gameplay, can not be underestimated.

For first-timers to the Fallout New Vegas, it is normal to assume the NCR as the good guys and Caesar's Legion as the baddies. But as you progress the game, you'll find out it's not as clear cut as that. Till this very day, Fallout New Vegas fans are still arguing who is best suited (or if anybody should) rule New Vegas and Hoover Dam.

Lot of us folks who play games, especially the ones who play either small indie titles or big ones that aren't just more CoD or PUBG clones wonder about that same thing you were. You got games that work well as a competitive esport, you got great stories, you got heartfelt independent art projects, but to a lot of people, they see you with a controller in your hand or fiddling with a mouse and keyboard and think it's all just a waste of time.

It wouldn't be stinky living in a vault. Like a submarine, the air would be scrubbed continuously. I served on a ballistic missile submarine, and after a 3 month patrol, when the hatches were opened it was 'fresh' air that was stinky.

I don't blame America for using nuclear weapons on Japan, during WW2, because Japan was the aggressor who attacked America first. Probably caused fewer casualties too, because the war would have dragged out otherwise, and pulled resources from the western front in Europe, meaning the Soviets would've occupied more of Europe and made life a living hell for us.
@WretchedEgg528
@WretchedEgg528 Год назад
You should learn history before saying stuff like this. The war was already over at this point. It was an intimidation act to other countries. It was politics, not the effort to stop the war. In fact, America supported the continuation of the WW2 to destroy as much of Europe, Nazies and USSR forces as possible. To come out as a sole winner in the end. Call me a "conspracy theorist", but i believe it was the America, who curated the nazi Germany. The US was the biggest beneficiary of the war. Since the war ended, they constantly start new conflicts to feed their military machine, selling weapons and sending their troops under the guise of "democracy", "liberty", whatever other lies the crowd believes in. They are a weapon manufacturing mafia. Their special services make deals with the drug lords and human traffickers, kidnapp and torture people, send them into mental hospitals. They alienate - spread disunity ( "diversity" ) amongst their citizens, dividing them into groups by race, sexuality, political views, religion and then radicalize them, all to stay in power by weakening, intimidating, destroying everybody else. I'm not a religious person, but i'm not surprised when people call the American regime "satanic". But at the same time, i believe any other country would've done the same given the amount of power they had... Power corrupts... And then it gives birth to weakness later. And America is full of that weakness today. That's why the big changes are coming. The power balance is shifting. "A combination of the New Deal and World War II lifted the U.S. out of The Great Depression." - first result from Google.

Glad you enjoyed Fallout! So to give some context: Overall, Fallout is a game series that is a dark satire of the cold war set in a retro-futuristic society that is inspired by the 1950s American futurism viewpoint. While we don't have flying cars, we have fusion-powered cars. Ballistic weapons match that of 1950s and earlier but with some futuristic weapons in the form of lasers and a green "plasma" technology. Also radiation causes superhuman mutations but in grotesque forms... Each Fallout game is set with a different protagonist. The first is the Vault Dweller after a water purification chip. The 'shot in the face' game is about the Courier, a package delivery person caught up in the middle of a brewing war and choosing a side between one of four options (the fourth being you as the leader!). Your character does not die from the gunshot wound to the face but perhaps it changed the characters behavior...Up to you to decide! The last one, Fallout 4, is about the 'Sole Survivor' who is the last remnant of a vault that used cryotechnology to preserve the residents. You're the last to survive and you were there in Boston when the bomb(s) rained down. As I stated, the games are a dark satire of a "what if" scenario of nuclear armageddon. Since that was a big fear in the years after the end of WWII, most of the game's aesthetics are borrowed from 1950s America. From there the game builds on top of that of imagining a world where some people have formed communities and try to survive whilst others enact as 'raiders' freely killing and harming others over the smallest things. Also radiation caused insects to grow by factors of their size, some humans have larger lifespans from radiation at the cost of looking like ghouls or as some say 'zombies' and also there are 'supermutants': humans infected with a virus that makes them easily twice the size of a normal human but with a green skin, generally lower intelligence (some exceptions), and they are sterile. The only way to make new supermutants is to dip humans in said virus: The Forced Evolutionary Virus or 'FEV' for short.

If you ever want to play the older games, DO NOT read further ahead, but tbh it hasn't aged well for those who do not like point and click style games. Those who played the games and loved them, I mean no offense, I love those games but it's not unreasonable for someone else to not like them and prefer to hear the story In Fallout 1, our character is known as the Vault Dweller, and like the intro said, we are in search of a Water Chip to save our Vault, Vault 13. As we embark our journey we find another Vault numbered 15, but it is abandoned. On the way around, we find a town called Shady Sands, and their people originated from Vault 15. Arradesh, the leader of the town, tasks us to help around and that eventually leads us to save his daughter, Tandi, from Raiders who also originated from Vault 15. These two, and the rest of Shady Sands, would eventually become the founders of the NCR, and Arradesh becomes the president, attempting to remake the US democratic nation. Eventually our adventures introduce us to more factions such as the Brotherhood of Steel, remnants of the military who mutinied and desire to keep technology away from others to protect them, and the Super Mutants, who grow more in strength as time goes on. Eventually we find a Water Chip, but as the Mutant threat continues, The Overseer sends us out again to try and stop them before they destroy everything. With little time, The Vault Dweller goes to the Brotherhood for assistance. They agree, giving us an old set of Power Armor, and launching an attack on the Military base where Mutants are created. We then find a cathedral where the Mutant Master resides, infiltrate it with the help of the Followers of The Apocalypse, and face off against the Master. Here we can choose to either kill him (which is very difficult) or attempt to appeal to him. His main goal is to allow humanity to thrive, and he feels Mutants are the next step, but if we play our cards right (and find a little bit of evidence) we convince him that his plan is flawed, as Mutants are biologically sterile and cannot reproduce. If we convince him, then he lets us go saying "There is no hope. Leave now. Leave while you still have _hope_ " and blows up the cathedral with him in it. We go back to our Vault victorious, and the Overseer congratulates us. After that however, fearing the impact our character would have in the fragile society of the Vault, the Overseer thinks the Vault will not survive if we come back, so he makes the tough decision and says "You saved us, but you'll kill us. I'm sorry. You're a hero, and you have to leave" and so the Vault Dweller walks back out to the wasteland, head down, but relieved that his Vault is safe. This then leads to Fallout 2, as we follow the tale of The Chosen One, the grandchild of the Vault Dweller. The Overseers's actions in the first game led to many other Vault 13 citizens to leave, following the Vault Dweller and establishing a tribe in Oregon named Arroyo. Over time the tribe thrives, but the harsh conditions of the wastes make life more difficult for the people of the tribe. The Elder of the village, The Chosen One's mother, tasks us to now find the GECK (Garden of Eden Creation Kit) a cold fusion device capable of reviving the wasteland and giving Arroyo the chance to live on. After many trials, The Chosen One is rewarded the Vault Dwellers sacred Vault suit with the Holy Number 13 written on the back, and his old PipBoy to aid in their travels. A lot, and I mean A LOT happens in 2, meeting remnants of the Mutant Army who are just trying to make a living, discovering the NCR being much bigger, and Tandi, now an old woman, is the current president, and all throughout we see a mysterious force of soldiers subjugating people and taking whatever they have. We soon learn that they are the Enclave, the remains of the old US Government who feel that they themselves the superior human, and those living in the Wasteland need to be purged. They kidnap the people of Vault 13, and do experiments on them as they do not have lingering effects of radiation. Soon even Arroyo was hit, and the people were taken, and it's up to the Chosen One to save them, which eventually they do, killing most of the higher ups of the Enclave, blowing up their oil refinery, and finally using the GECK to revive the lands of Arroyo. The people of Vault 13 feel that they have no place in the Vault anymore and decide to integrate with Arroyo, finally reuniting Vault 13 as both the Vault Dweller and Tribe Elder dreamed about for so long. The Elder passes away in her sleep, and The Chosen One is now the leader of the newly formed Arroyo.

I got into the fallout series with new vegas. It is definitely interesting. Unlike our society which didnt totally embrace the nuclear age, the fallout universe did while keeping alot of things true: corrupt governments, large megacorporations who seek profit probably at the expense of human life, and human nature in all its good and bad. Some embracing the chaos, others trying to rebuild, others trying to survive. When Toilet paper became rare during the early covid, I had Raider attack flashbacks of fallout 4.
