The lyric "in Seoul to the SKY" is a reference to Korea's three biggest universities located in Seoul and whose acronym is SKY (Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University). It's beyond competitive to get into these universities, but the job market is also so competitive that if you're not from one of the SKY schools you're not going to get good work opportunities. They're criticizing the Korean education system and the expectation placed on young middle school and high school aged kids to devote every moment of their lives to studying to get them on this path to Seoul and SKY and then to a well-paying government job etc. They're also calling into question the idea that it's just for now kids have to sacrifice their happiness and their lives when even if they do all the right things and meet those expectations, the ultra-competitiveness and overworking never ends. As kids who turned away from those expectations and took the unconventional path to pursue music, BTS are challenging other young people to live for themselves and not let their lives and dreams be dictated by others.
Korean education system is extremely competitive, the hours of study are long and your friends end up being seen as your competitors to succeeding in life. It's a lot of youth spent on rigorous study, average is not gonna cut it
Same where I live. A kid achieves a 95/100 on an exam and the parents are like "Why didn't you get full marks?!" After school, most kids are headed to cram school which cost extra money, then they head home and still have to do homework. People attend college even if they end up in jobs where it's not necessary to have a bachelor's degree just because "everyone" does it.
In SK, kids spend about 14 hours a day between school, after-school academies, other lessons, tutoring, and homework. The pressure to get high marks and very into one of the three major universities is intense. SK has one of the highest suicide rates in the world for 12 to 20 year olds. BTS has made it their mission to support their country's youth. "According to member J-Hope, the name signifies the group's desire "to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets"." Hence the name Bangtan Sonyeondan... bangtan meaning bulletproof! 💜
The ones who find it disrespectful are mainly antis or other fandoms who did that at the time to try to bring down BTS. If it were any other group nobody would've cared. Personally I love it I think it's funny and I don't think I've ever come across any Army who had a problem with it.

NO is such an important song. Rebellious BTS speaking up for their peers is everything. S Korea has the worlds highest teen suicide rate because of the insane pressures. My favorite old song is one written by Suga, Tomorrow.

This song is about the harsh Korean education system as well as parental and societal expectations put on youth. Kids go to school for 8-10 hours a day, and some go to cram school after that, making for some a 15-hour day. Sadly, South Korea has one of the highest youth suicide rates in the ages of 10-18 years old in the modernized world. 💜
During Covid, BTS did a massive online concert called MOTS:ONE and did a couple of their old old songs as part of the setlist. They opened with ON and went straight into N.O and We Are Bulletproof Part 2. It was fab! 💜 The concert was meant to be performed as part of a world tour in 2020 but had to be cancelled due to Covid. So they said “to hell with it” and performed it anyway. Awesome concert. Would recommend a watch if you can find it. 💜💜
People grow and change, and it effects every part of our lives.... same goes for BTS. If u really think about it, their songs have a space and time in our lives when we need it. Butter, Dynamite, PTD when u happy and feeling good. Danger, No More Dreams Bapsae, Bulletproof Pt 2, when u ready to take on the world. Truth Untold, House of Cards, One Day, Let Go when u feel a little down/lonely. They have a song for every mood and time in ure life 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 No other group can do that for u. Korea had a turning point in its economic history, and this was through a lot of work and discipline. So far this is important, but the downside is burdening young people with an obsession with merit and performance. Hard work is a philosophy of life. So much so that in BTS, with its intense life of rehearsals, shows, travels, etc., everyone went to University and graduated. There is a parallel to ON music (in addition to on and no being the same word read backwards) . "NO" vs "ON": - in 'NO' they are very young and they fight against society and concepts that oppress them. - in 'ON', they are adults and the fight is within themselves, against their own dilemmas. BTS is always deep in their lyrics and contexts.
True. To me, NO projects the resentment towards working so hard you have to betray your current needs (like building solid friendships) for something you don’t even know if you will want (or worse, for something you have a distinct gut feeling you DON’T want). ON projects the realization that “nothing good comes easy” and certainly doesn’t BECOME “easy” just because you reach it, but in this case WELCOMES that “pain”/hard work/sacrifice as the price to keep doing what fulfills you.
At the time, making this kind of "protest" music was very unusual for idols who were meant to be pretty and talented and flawless and make catchy bops. But Bang Si-Hyuk put the group together specifically to allow them to use their voices and speak directly to the youth out there - he wanted something different, something a bit more genuine, because he thought it was a niche nobody had filled yet. The members were young, and so their first albums were aimed at/about school age kids and their issues because that was THEIR issues, stuff they had clear opinions about. As the group grew up, they tackled new issues relating to new life stages.
This song made me ARMY. I saw other idols react to BTS's live performance of N.O. and I was hooked. And they were never afraid to speak up, even in the beginning.
54 year old ARMY from New Zealand. I am very very fond of young BTS and can happily relisten to them. JUNGKOOK NEEDS TO RAP MORE!!!! Miss it so much and he was really really good. Frustrating because I would love to hear him to it more often. This may be my favourite older BTS song. Hard to narrow it down because they produced so many bangers back then.

There's a clip out there of them watching some of their earliest videos, and one of them - J-Hope I think - commented that "We were so INTENSE" and Taehyung answers "It's the eyeliner" and it just makes me laugh every time. 😄

As much as it is powerful, aggressive, and hostile here, it is powerful, lovely, and joyful in Just One Day.

I’m so happy you’re reacting to their albums in chronological order. It’s the best and easiest way to listen to their discography. There’s a lot of it! 😂 Also, BTS is still very much story driven. They have the Bangtan Universe which is a continuous very complicated storyline. Blood, Sweat and Tears is in that storyline.
you nailed the message behind the song! Asian parents force too much of their dream on to their kids. Korean has this event call "doljabi" held at a baby's 1st birthday. Different objects were placed few steps in front of various objects in front of the baby & the adults would urge the baby to crawl to select an object. Whatever the baby selected is meant to be their future career. Yet the objects are what the parents WANT, such as gavel (judge), stethoscope (doctor), coin/cash (wealth), book (teacher/professor), etc. You won't see object represent "lower class" jobs for selection. So basically adults/parents already force the "future" from that early stage... I'm sure you heard about the high suicide rate in Korea due to the social pressure put on kids. I read 1 in 5 of the over ~13K people took their life in 2022 was teenager... it's just so sad... This song while young ARMYs can totally relate to, you can image all the parents/government would blame them for teaching the wrong ideas to kids...

If you react to the rise of Bangtan series you will understand better this song. In chapter 3 they analyse the reason this was made and why it relates to BTS. BTS themselves explain things as well. This is my favorite old BTS song. I wish i had BTS back when i was at school giving me that confidence to follow my dreams.
The eyeliner is a bit of a joke amongst the boys. Asking which BTS song old or otherwise is your favourite is like asking to name your favourite child, impossible. South Korea has a very high suicide rate with Japan not far behind caused by the tremendous pressure they're under. It's a sad record to hold. Their population is dropping because young people can't afford to get married and have a family. So this was a commentary on that. I'll choose War of Hormone as a fave if I must with Baepsae coming a very close second.

i mean this in the nicest way possible but would really appreciate if you dont make unnecessary comparisons between "old" and "new" bts when you're barely caught up with 5% of their discography. You're reacting to their old music for the music, not for comparing it to their recent releases or seeing how "old bts" were. I've noticed this in all of your old bts reactions, it seems like you're more focused on checking out how bts were in there debut years rather than the music (again im not being hateful or toxic, just a valid criticism i hope you take)
I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with comparing as seeing the evolution in styles is definitely a big part of their growth and whether or not I’ve been a fan for a day or 10 years, I’ve still seen their most recent works and their oldest so being new to the band doesn’t change anything really. Also, saying I’m reacting to just compare isn’t fair and is an assumption made by yourself and couldn’t be further from the truth. I’ve had songs of theirs literally bring me to tears so to say I’m just “comparing” isn’t really fair at all. No hate or anything, just my perspective and hope that helps give a little thought behind my videos ☺️

I think you’re honestly projecting your own feelings and whatnot on someone who’s just being honest with my opinions. There is no “agenda” or anything. There is literally nothing harmful about discussing an artists evolution and growth. If you’ve seen any of my videos which you’ve said you have, you’ll know I’ve enjoyed and loved songs of theirs that are old and new. If other fans want to get worked up over something so silly as someone saying they prefer earlier or older work (which I haven’t even done) then that’s up to them but it’s not my obligation to act a certain way (essentially not be genuine) because of what someone else thinks. I’ve been nothing but respectful and genuine, in fact I’d say I’m celebrating them and trying to highlight how genius their early work is. I respectfully won’t change my interests, how genuine I am or what I like for the sake of others as art is meant to be subjective which I’m sure everyone can agree ☺️
