I'm a 53yr old mom of 3. There may have been great speeches I've watched and heard in my life, but this speech by RM rocked me to my core realizing that I have actually forgot about myself and just stuck to the cards i have in life. Pondering on what he said, I said my name repeatedly, over and over, and started crying. This speech is very personal to me and cemented me as a BTS ARMY. These boys are like a family to me, like my sons.

BTS have the opportunity to speak 3 times in UN General Assembly. This is the very first one in 2018, where only Namjoon spoke. The other 2 times in 2020 and 2021. In those two every member spoke and did a performance in the 3rd one. They also spoke in Dear class of 2020 graduation ceremony and anti asian hate crime in White House in 2022. All the speeches are really great and meaningful. Also yes, in this video, Namjoon was nervous and his hands were trembling. If you check the bangtan bomb(behind the scenes) of this event, you can see how much Namjoon was stressed. But he did an amazing job.

This speech was so iconic that it was taught in schools around the world and quoted by many professors and students during graduation speeches. I always admire RM's intellect and articulation when speaking but specially in English. The man taught himself the language by watching a tv show and is now able to express himself better than lots of native speakers out there. He really is a genius not just because of his IQ and it shows in his music and lyrics as well I mean how many artists do you know put out albums based off of Philosophical books/theories? Only BTS💜

There is a behind-the scenes video for this. All the guys were nervous and Namjoon kept practicing his speech. He was actually extremely nervous and said that while speaking his hand was shaking uncontrollably. This speech cemented my admiration for my bias Kim Namjoon.

Kim Namjoon is a philosopher, poet and thinker. All of BTS are humble, thoughtful, generous, kind and smart. They are an amazing group of very talented young men who spent their teens in front of the public eye and have lived with integrity and grace. ❤💜

This was the first of three speeches BTS made at the UN. And there is a great behind the scenes video about it. It shows them flying to New York, and Namjoon, rereading, and practicing, the speech over, and over. It also shows the support the other guys gave to Namjoon. BTS are truly amazing. And yet, for all their achievements - and the responsibilities placed upon their shoulders - they remain humble, ordinary guys. And that makes them even more deserving of respect.

They got plenty of hate by people saying a boy band doesn't belong at the UN. Everyone was surprised by this meaningful speech. The UN loves the attention that BTS brings to important issues.

His words on this day match his actions every day. That’s why BTS has the biggest fandom In The world. They are truly authentic and humble people who act just like everyone else. They don’t try to be cool or whatever kids call it these days lol. They are themselves with the same struggles as everyone else. That’s what makes them cool in my eyes.

I have followed BTS since 2015 and have been there at all hours of the day and night to watch promotions, comebacks and cheer the boys on as an early member of ARMY. Seeing them in concert in 2018 was life-changing. I will be almost 60 years old when they have their group comeback in 2025. They are the most inspiring and caring group ever.

I remember listen to this speech the first day that I started looking into BTS. I remember sitting on my bed listening to it and just…..crying. IDOL and Inner Child are the songs that first made me pay attention to BTS, but I believe this speech is what made me ARMY! You should also do the one from 2 years later, when all of them spoke. And the 2020 grad video! Amazing speeches 2:10 and yes he is! 3:44 again, yes he is

I was so nervous for them watching the live stream, it was like watching my brothers performing. Namjoon did amazing👏👏

They also did two other UN speeches, one that was done as a video due to COVID and one that they did in person at the UN again. These other two speeches were done in Korean and all members spoke. RM also spoke Korean, saying that he was not representing BTS up there, but his home country of Korea, so he chose to speak the language, too. Because of how strict the lockdown was in May/June of 2020, graduates of various levels of schooling were unable to have graduation ceremonies or commencement speeches. So, there were a number of celebrities that participated in a virtual commencement celebration. All seven of the boys gave speeches and they performed a few songs. All of the speeches are very moving and motivational, so you may want to watch those. There's also a behind the scenes video on the BangtanTV channel that shows what RM and the others went through in preparation for this speech. The others didn't speak, but they did everything they could for RM to support him and it was very sweet seeing how supportive they were. Oh, and I call them boys, too, but I'm in my 50s so they're all young enough to be my children.

I watched it live while I was at work. I felt so proud of Joon and all the rest of the BTS members. And even tho I am in my 50’s his words inspired me. 💜

Well...If you really want my true answer... I listened to BTS for the "real" first time ("real" cause when I got into Kpop I just saw how many of their songs I already knew, just didn't know it was from them) maybe around 2 years ago. I'm a HUGE music enthusiast, so yes, I love listening to good songs even if the singer isn't the writer (I always check credits for nearly anything that I love), so when I found them it was truly like finding a treasure chest full of jewels. RM and SUGA are freaking top 10\15 most credited songwriters in Korea, THAT IS INSANE! They have so much content, so much depth to them, that I just don't feel like I can call myself ARMY (YET!). But the appreciation that I have for this group is really on a scale that is unmatched. I heard this speech a year ago I think, maybe more. And it was just so powerful, so...hypnotizing. I couldn't stop chilling up, and I probably watched it more than 40\50 times...even up to 100 times if I count the reactors that I watch who watched this. I swear that I'm always kind of hoping to stumble upon a new reactor that found them and reacted to RMs speech. RMs speech really is poetry. I can say that this comity probably never said words so dear and true to them like the things that he spoke about and that even "IF!" they invited them to represent cause they are Super famous at the beginning of all of this partnership, they probably never guessed the absolute treasure they actually found. I feel like I never speak like that on anyone but them, and they are not even my Num.1 group. Even my Num.1 create everything themselves, from writing to composing to arranging, to creating a lot of their choreos, and I love them with all my heart and soul (Too intense...lol just trying to make a point), I never spoke about them in the same way as I do with BTS, especially RM, and SUGA (who is definitely my ULT bias. related and unrelated to them as a group). All of us were children once, we had bigger dreams than the big sky above, but they were crushed, lacked the belief from our peers, and we started to judge ourselves harsher than we think other people see us. It has a name actually, "The mirror effect", when you see yourself in the mirror in a way that you THINK others see you and not as who you really are (Not a native English speaker, I'm a Criminologist in another language lol so I hope my own translation is correct enough). Our brain functions in weird ways sometimes, cause being social creatures, wanting companionship, being a part of our close environment, be close to other people, protects us, but It is, in my opinion, hurtful sometimes. If I'll analyze just myself for a second... Lots of tattoos, piercings, unique dressing style, people sometimes look at me sideways. Sometimes I care A LOT and it hurts, and sometimes I don't give a SH!T :) People judge all the time, and we do it too sometimes, even if we see ourselves as very open, and very thoughtful to others, we do. Actually, when you catch yourself doing that, it feels bad, it feels wrong. I don't say that I'm a perfect person, I'm SO FAR from being perfect but most of how I act, what I do, and what I wanna do, are maybe a little different, but they are mine. And I had a lot of dreams that I stuffed, that weren't accepted, "I'm thinking too far", "I want to go or do things that are impossible". So, for me, music, listening to music, and reading books, is absolute freedom. Getting back to RMs speech, it was insightful, powerful, full of honesty, and with an actual true story behind it. It had a big effect on me and I think that I listen to it a lot cause it gives me a spark of something. The first few times I was "just" impressed than, really breaking it down, It almost felt like I felt guilty and sorry for all of the things that I wanted to do or be but at the same time, it just gives you such enormous amount of power, it makes you really think. Every single time that I watch it, I truly do listen, and when he's asking those questions, I ask them too. What's my name...?

Let me just say this... Few years ago I got the love yourself album heart symbole tattooed on my upper right arm with the text Speak yourself in Namjoon his handwriting... That's how powerful RM speech is to/for me! Everytime he asks what is your name, speak yourself, I cry.... I'm a 50 year old Army from the Netherlands and I kinda lost myself for so long until my child with autism introduced me to BTS.... And the rest is history they say 😂 It's been a journey... As a woman, as an artist, as a mother who raised 2 little kids by herself with 1 kid having autism. They are now 21 and 17 😊 And I now even have my own RU-vid channel for 3 years already where we, mostly I are reacting to music and BTS with my child Lil Dude with autism. We both love RM! And Lil Dude is really smart in understanding MVs 😂 and his mother doesn't... BTS made our bond even more stronger because Lil Dude could explain things better to me through BTS lyrics and songs.... He may have seemed calm, but I saw some behind the scenes footage... He was reciting the speach the whole time during the flight and even in the airport and while they were waiting to get called in at the UN. He was nervous. Even the other members that didn't had to talk were nervous...

i was there when this happened. the speech resonated with me so much (i was 19 then) that i listened to it so often, i still, to this day, have it memorized. his way with words & their capability to captivate you like that is truly once in a lifetime i feel. i’m so honored to be a fan of him, and them as a group. love them so much 💜

So I suddenly realize, the guys are at the UN today and I put TV on and go to NY1, local NYC coverage and there’s Bangtan ready to file into the auditorium! I stood in front of my set, waiting for a blunder, holding my breath and I was FLOORED! His words were direct and perfect for the occasion, the vibe AND tied the 2 tours together, LY & SY. The last piece of the puzzle. “I stan the right men.”

When I first heard this speech all I could think was that everyone needs to hear this. Young people of course, but also adults. How many of us have gotten lost in the hustle and bustle of daily living and forgotten our passions?! Namjoon is my bias for a reason.

This is how I first discovered BTS. I was so moved by this young man's speech that I was prompted to find out who he was and the rest as they say is history. Happy Army for a couple of years now :)
