I am sunni Muslim all the sunni respect every companion of Holy Prophet (PBUH) equally even after selection of Hazrat Abu bakr (RA) as first khalifa of islam does not depict that Hazrat Ali (RA) is not respected and Muslims go against the decision of Prophet (PBUH) but the real conflict of shia sunni is after selection of hazrat Abu bakr siddique (RA) as according to shias Hazrat Ali (RA) should get the post of khalifa and they believe Hazrat Ali (RA) as first khalifa instead of Hazrat Abubakr (RA) .......both the sects have there own believes islam is same for every Muslim so for those who converts to islam I will suggest to not confuse in sectarian groups as per definition of Muslim (A person who believe in oneness of Allah and Prophet (PBUH) as last Prophet he or she is a Muslim) and for a Muslim Quran and Hadith (lifestyle or Sunna of Prophet )are most important

These differences intensified after the martyrdom of the third Caliph (Hazrat Uthman). This is the event at the time of Muhammad's death which happened in 632 and the event of Karbala happened in 680.

The link is pretty easy...The split initially started in a minor way as it was political matter of who will be the khalifa but Hazrat Ali R. A settled the matter in order to stop the division by openly giving pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr r. A and everyone agreed with it so the split of thought was resolved... Lateron Ali r. A became the khalifa so the matter was fully resolved as till his time their were no sunni shia.. It's only after the Assassination of Ali r. A by some rebel groups who were trying to create division among muslims the sunni shia split happened on the basis that after Ali r. A who will be the next Khalifa...by that time a shahbi named Muwaiya took the control of Khilafa and changed the selection process from kind of Islamic Democracy to dynasty type where he made his son Yazid the mext khalifa which was opposed by The grandson of the Proohet s. A. W Hussain and he was martyred in karbala... Sunnis agree that succession till Muwaiya was ok but shia says after Ali nothing was ok and they separated themselves to such an extent that they went extreme by saying none other then Ali and his sons were eligible for the post of Khalifa.... So bottom line is the real actual sunni shia split happened after Ali r. A... Sunnis were ok with Muwaia R. a and shia opposed him and after Muwaia the split became very deadly even thiugh sunnis reject Yazid but shis went ti the extreme that no one is valid other then Ali and Hussain and started writing their own books of religion isolating themselves from the greater Muslim community
