Took his name in honor, but also glasses cause he needed them. But yes, the glasses also holds sentimental value for him as we see in the first Overwatch Cinematic that was shown on Blizzcon during the Overwatch reveal.

Whoo! Hope I didn't come across as crass or demanding, the story of Overwatch comes through so much cleaner when watching them in order and I'm super happy to see you two do it. I love seeing your theorycrafting on what and why. So let me answer some of your questions. The man and the gorilla did not merge together or anything. Dr. Harold Winston was one of the scientists working on an experiment to make creatures of human-level intelligence. The gorilla who takes Winston's name grew up on the moon, him and all the other creatures there being subject to experiments to increase intelligence. But the apes there rebelled, killing all the scientists and Winston who was one of the weaker apes and objecting to the rebellion had to escape so he rebuilt the only space ship/escape craft from the moonbase and came to Earth, where he joined Overwatch. Noone knows what happened to the other apes, they might still be there preparing war on humanity. As for who/what Overwatch was, it was a group of highly specialized elites who showed extreme skill and ability to creatively defeat the Omnics during the First Omnic War, a global catastrophe on par with the World Wars. World governments picked up these elites and gave them anything they needed to end the war. Afterwards they became a global peacekeeping taskforce, very similar to the Avengers yes. And the Petras Act is similar to the Sokovia Accords, it bans Overwatch from activity. The reason for the Petras Act is a looooong story best left for another time, but it involves the spec-ops group of Overwatch called Blackwatch and infighting between the commander of Overwatch and the commander of Blackwatch.
Yeah Dr. Winston is basically Gorilla Winston's father in the ways that matter. The doctor died (it literally involves an evil hamster because: Blizzard) so him taking his name and glasses is important. Winston is the new leader of Overwatch, the original one was Soldier 76 (Dude in 'Hero') who everyone believes is dead. Overwatch was disbanded about 9-10 years ago.
Hammond isn't evil and he's not responsible for the professor's death. The other gorillas killed him, Hammond just used the event to escape along with Winston.
Joshua Elie Blachier yeah Hammond and Winston are friends so I very much doubt Hammond had anything to do with the uprising. Although... some of Winston’s comments in Horizon Base suggest he might not understand or refuses to accept what happened (something like “Oh.... I guess everyone is, Uh, on the OTHER side of the base!” Instead of accepting that everyone’s dead)
