Clear, detailed demonstration how to tie non slip loop knot, for both fly fishing lures and regular lures. I have used this knot many years for fly fishing and it has never slipped. Lures have better action. Make sure the loop is small and close to the hook eye or the lure will get hung up in the loop.

I fished with a guide who used a fireman's knot to make similar non-slip loops to flies. This knot is just a Figure 8 made in a folded back line and is strong and easy to do right - if all you want is a loop. (It is preferred by many rock climbers over the bowline because their lives depend on it). The guide was a retired fire fighter and figured out how to tie a Figure 8 knot using only the tag end to allow a fly to be in the loop - something that is a bit hard to remember and easy to do wrong. Your knot avoids both problems. BTW - this is one of the best educational videos I've seen. Your teaching style is outstanding.

Remember the Old Father of Fly Fishing," LEFTY KREGH?? ,He is no longer with us, But left us with his great Loop Knot , called Kregh Loop knot. Simple ,Strong. you want a loop knot tag end; When Trimed, to point rearward back toward your lure, so weed debris slides off of it.

Over many months I've watched knot tying videos ad infinitum on RU-vid and learned much. However this is the first one to make me literally laugh out loud - LOL. " . . . have no idea how a couple of dozen ended up in my flybox" ROTFL We have an expression down here in Oz for someone like you - 'Funny Bastard' Thanks for the laugh, but I think, after having just mastered the 'Perfection Loop', I'll stick with that one . . . for the time being. Cheers . . . .

Nice job on demonstrating the knot. It really works well with Clousers. I tested a slight variation that made the knot stronger. Use a double overhand knot instead of the initial single overhand knot to start tying the knot.

Many thanks ,your excellent demo was the only one among four others that I watched that taught me how to do this knot correctly! I tie this knot a little different but not on purpose. I was trying to remember how to tie it and combined an improved clinch knot. Now I wonder how it compares. I bring the tag in from the fly and back through the overhand but rather than wrapping six or seven times I only go once or twice and then back through the overhand. Now, like an improved clinch, I put the tag end back through the loop I just created and tighten down. Works great and keeps the knot small in size. Great video

This is also a great knot to use when using a rapalas without an o-ring it gives them a lot more action, just be sure that you wet the knot before you pull it tight or it will fray the line and snap on the set.

A good way to know you tied this knot right is if the tag end sticks straight up in a 45 degree angle. If the tags points toward you fly re do it because it'll break with the slightest tension

Even back in the 70's, I would use the exact same knot while throwing a Rapala or Rebel Minnow Bait...#9, 11 or 13.....It gives it a tighter Wobble when fished....I also used a Bolan Knott with the added 4 turns of the line and back thru the Bolan loop....Great Know to get more action on a Minnow style bait....All other Lures, ties straight to the Hook eye...Only use for Minnow style baits..

You don't have to pass the tag through the overhand knot twice. I make an overhand knot, pass the tag through the eye, wrap the tag a few times above the overhand knot, pass the tag through the overhand knot, and fair the knot as the video shows. Hasn't failed me yet, and it's my most commonly used knot! Great video and great knot!

This is a great knot. Only thing I do differently is lubricate the knot before final seating. Little bit of saliva works great, but if you don't want to put it in your mouth, just dip it into the water your fishing in. Then you will be able to seat the knot in one strong pull because then the sliding line doesn't generate nearly as much friction. When seating a knot, don't bounce your knots to seat them. That's what a fish does to weaken your line and break you off. Don't scrunch the knot together on the final seating with your finger tips - you'll end up seating the knot with some slack in the it that will slip when it gets wet and under pressure. "Insurance tags" don't stop this slipping. If you lose a hook and you get a curly-cue back on the end of the line, you knot slipped. It did not reach its breaking strength - poorly tied knot. Another great loop knot worth looking at is a Duncan's Loop knot. It stays open during fishing but slams shut tight when you get a fish on. Leave a little tag on the end of that knot and you can pull on the tag with your forceps to open the loop again. If you land a big fish, don't reuse the loop. Cut off about 6" or your line and tie on a new knot so you are not fishing with "pre-stressed" line.
@dw8773
@dw8773 5 лет назад
Uh-oh, I'm SO guilty of doing the 'scrunch' thing! I love this knot but feel like I've dodged a bullet every time it's successfully tightened. Sooner or later I just know I'm going to slip - or something else will give - and my fishing day will end with a fly fully imbedded somewhere in my hand.

Great video. But a question: if you use up 6" of tippet, and change flies a few times, seems like you're going to need to replace your tippet much more often, right? I get that it might still be worth it, but just wondering.

But this is NOT the Rapala Knot, which has an additional step of turning the tag end back through the previous loop that was just made. I.e., this is the original knot and Rapala made an improvisation or improved version of it.
