Hi Everyone! Today I have a video about non toxic cleaning products. I am sharing how to find healthy cleaners for your household. I specifically wanted to know if Windex was better than Method glass cleaner and I did some research that I wanted to share with you. I found a great resource (link below) so that you can do your own researching about the conventional cleaners or "natural" cleaners you may be curious about in terms of their toxicity, whether or not they are eco friendly, chemical-free and holistic etc. I was surprised to learn what I did and I hope you enjoy!

Great video Laura. Thanks for sharing!!I’ve used Method for a while and just this month decided to take a leap and make my own spray cleaner - 50/50 mix of vinegar with 15 drops of lemon essential oil and 15 drops lavender essential oil. Works a treat! Sounds silly but I also like the simplicity of using a plain glass spray bottle. It sits on my bench and is ready to roll.... much nicer decor than a brightly branded bottle (ocd much?!? 🙈)

I actually use water and micro fiber cloths to clean most things, actually cleans better than our toxin cleaners. My appliances in my kitchen are way cleaner than using stainless steel cleaner and it’s just water. I used to think Method and Mrs Meyers was great, it’s all about marketing. Besides bathroom cleaning products I don’t buy much. Thanks for sharing!

Laura Hoyda I have some Norwex, how I started. I love the Maker’s Cleaning ones, from a YT channel, she sells bundles. I have some random ones too. I no longer by wood furniture polish, stainless steel cleaner, leather cleaner, etc. amazed at how well they clean! Even work sometimes on my windows with the right cloth.

Laura Hoyda those are the ones! I am not a fan of the dish towels, LOVE her cleaning ones. The purple ones I use for everything and then green or blue for computer screens and glass. I love Norwex’s Blue hand mitten, awesome for blinds and window screens, never knew how dirty my window screens were 😊 Hooked on water and micro fiber cloths.

I am hypersensitive to odors and fragrances and Windex Window Cleaner is unbearable. I tried the Windex Vinegar formula and found it equally bad. The ammonia odor is harsh, lingering (more than a day post use) and gives me teary-eyed headaches. Not the best motivation to clean regularly. I recently began using Method products and have no side effects. The fragrances dissipate quickly. It might not be a perfect product but it’s made regular housecleaning bearable. I doubt there’s a truly perfect non-toxic cleaning product (except possibly soap, which can’t be used on some surfaces.). Vinegar smells terrible and although it’s not nearly so bad as ammonia or bleach, it’s still not pleasant.

I always thought that method was supposed to be eco friendly, that is how they advertise themselves here in the UK. I think trying to find healthy cleaning agents is a great endeavour. Everything has so many chemicals in it and its hard to get something natural but efficient. Great vlog.
@LauraHoyda

Thanks Jules! I agree. That is how it's marketed here too. I think it is better than some conventional cleaners and I think it's great that they share the ingredients on the bottle, especially if they do not have to!

Any essential oil and hot water should work. Well not any essential oil but you get me find what works for the task and wont hurt whatever youre cleaning and what smell you like or is neutral enough and go with it. If you have anything that is actually dirty dirty not just not squeaky clean then use a scrubbing brush after putting some bicarb over the spill or whatever and you can put some lemon juice or diluted essential oil like the water soluable kind in hot water then dip a scrubbing brush like a proper heavy duty one think cinderella and scrub at it. Then once the smell stain whatever is gone you can wipe it up and go over it with your usual hot wet clean cloth thatd use use on the rest of the floors or whatever. Like linseed oil is a great way to polish oil whatever wooden furniture without crappy chemicals or strong odours uou do this after making sure its free of dust and just wiping it down then before bed you really rub in the oil like massage it into the wood (look into what types of wood you have and if they have varnish etc some are better with super old recipes that say victorians used but yeah linseed oil then just let it absorb and dry overnight... if you can switch out plastics for glass or galvanised steel or wood instead of plastic so its more of lifelong thing and natural materials it looks a lot nicer as well. And when you have like all the same sort of materials then you can clean and sut etc with the same products and solutions and dont have to switch constantly if you do switch to wood etc over plastic make sure to get local or at least native to your country or area stuff if you can im slowly but surely switching over everything i can just trying to bwtter for myself the environment my pocket etc. Ive even started learning things like self sufficency like making my own clothes out of local 100 pecernt cotton or linen instead of plastic mixes...

You use the stock “solution” to make up a heavy and a light mix. Between both you can pretty much clean anything in your house including laundry. I have been using it for almost two years now. You can get rid of so many specialty cleaners so it really simplifies things. And it does a pretty decent job. There’s more info on their website too if you’re interested

Laura Hoyda go to shaklee.com Also, you dilute it yourself and it lasts for so long. Be sure to get the spray bottle kit with the Basic H 2. It has instructions on each and they’re soooo cute. If you buy the concentrate and only used it to clean glass (diluted of course) it makes over 5,000 bottles of glass cleaner alone!! All of their products are safer and great quality! I use my Basic H2 to dust, clean glass, clean counters, etc. I trust it on my high def tv screens and wood.

3 of the best glass and window cleaners are 50 /50 mix vinegar and water or 50 /50 mix vodka and water but best streak free finish of all is plain water with a couple of teaspoons of baby shampoo in a spray bottle ...tried all the commercial window cleaners including Method and all leave streaks and smell toxic.

I'm wondering if the ingredients aren't listed on your bottle of Windex because of different Canadian regulations vs US regarding labeling? It doesn't surprise me that the ingredients lists don't all match up from source to source. I have severe dairy allergy and encounter this a lot due to labeling issues. In the US, a product lacking in the dairy sugar lactose can be labeled as non-dairy even though it is the protein that makes it "dairy" and not the sugar. Ugh! I prefer to just use vinegar and water with newspaper or a rag on my windows and mirrors. If you think about it, your don't really need to *disinfect* those areas so much as just clean them to look presentable -- you don't eat off of your windows and mirrors, right? :) I *LOVE* the Environmental Working Group! It's one of my favorite resources!
