I have packs of these in 4 from Littleton that i bought back then when they first came out with them but have Hundreds of others found in Coin Stars machines but have not heard of the Transitional one, you find out a lot on here that you have never heard of, thanks SHAWN.

Interesting transitional error is the 1972 Lincoln Cent that was made into a silver piece. The one that was PCGS graded was taken by the government and eventually the legal case settled and the coin was valued at a nifty 1 million dollars.

@@ginagraydon476 sure is and there are still 9 of them unaccounted for, that are probably in some politicians coin collection stashed away until they are legal to own much the same way as the 5 liberty nickels that mystery has yet to be solved as to how they got out of the mint,at least the pennies were distributed to important people and they were supposed to turn them in and instead they kept them for their own collections

Hey Shaun, maybe it's just me or maybe I missed something even though I watched your video a few times. Can you please just tell me exactly what it is that I'am looking for? Is it a proof coin weighing 2.5 or is it a business strike weighing 3.1? Or is it something other than that?

I suspect that he is trying to say that a copper proof coin from the S mint could have ended up being punched by a P die, even if an employee purposely inserted one of these copper planchets in a Philadelphia machine it would barer an S mint mark since the coins were already punched prior to leaving the San Francisco mint. To pull this off there would have to be a wayward employee from S in cahoots with one from P in order to sneak a blank copper planchet out of the San Francisco mint & one in Philadelphia that could get it thru a Philly machine, than it would simply be a no mint marked.

Business Strike weighing 3.1 or 3.2 would be the error. Proof and Satin finishes were made weighing 3.2 grams

@@momontelongo2223 if its a proof or satin finish i believe thats normal if its a business strike then I think you may have something like I do. From my research atleast "Only the Satin and Proof Finishes were supposed to weigh 3.1/3.2 grams" The regular business strike was not. It was supposed to weigh 2.5 grams. Although the information in Redbook differs from what the sets say. The Proof and Satin Sets of the 2009 say that only they are supposed to weigh 3.1/3.2 grams and are made of copper. Redbook I believe states that even the Business Strikes can weigh 3.1/3.2 grams so I'm not 100% sure. Even the when the guys talk about them on their channels they say only the Satin and Proof finishes should weigh as the copper does and not the business strikes. My gut tells me I should be right in the fact that only the Satin and Proof finishes should weigh 3.1/3.2 grams. It wouldn't be the first time the Redbook was wrong. It doesn't happen often but I have heard it has made errors before. So with all that said sounds like you and I need to send our coins in to PCGS or the other place to have them graded.

2006 Canadian Penny is the transitional year for the Canadian penny and there are 4 known varieties and two valuable errors. One error is more valuable than the other.

Those Satin Cents D & P were copper also. At 784,000 minted for each design, that's less than a 31S.

2009 Mint sets all have 95% copper cents them. That is P & D cents. Just read the card. That is why I purchased several of them. So it is possible to have a P or D cent in business strike.

I just checked my 2009 uncirculated mint sets D & P , and the card states that the cents are 95% copper and other 5% tin and zinc .

But ya know, I've only found 4 of them total. 1 log cabin, 2 formative yrs and 1 with him standing up in a suit; however, as far as solely pocket change ones, they all look kinda.. cheapo? And some from Littleton coin company. I have not opened all the mint rolls, in mint package rolls, but I have weighed the coins from Littleton. Among the coins from Littleton I found 2 coins that weighed 3.083 and 3.183 grams. Are they your "unicorn " cents? I also weighted some older cents and found a 1982 Philadelphia minted large date cent that weighed over 3 grams. Are these common for 1982 or could it be an error? Please let me know as I am understandably curious about how to proceed. Thanks.

How would anyone be able to tell copper from Bronze? Its not that easy... would the bronze not stain if kept with dirty pennies for 8 years while the copper will show copper stains?

I have a set from the S mint on the coin there are noticable copper bleeding through 3 of the S Lincoln set. 4th penny is a D mint mark. WOW!

Hey Shaun love your work I am Canadian and have found 2 of the formative year Lincoln cents. One of them appears normal the other entrigues me because the index finger appears doubled on the end and if I count the fingers without the thumb I count 5 maybe I'm crazy but I don't think so, never thought of weighing the coins. That will be my next step to see if I have a 3.1 gram. Thanks for the info.

The Red Book says: "Special versions [of the 2009 Lincoln cents] included in satin-finish collector sets are made of the same metallic composition as was used for the original 1909 cents (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc)." So that would make all the satin finish 2009 cents copper (P and D). Mintage 784,614. Are you saying that the Red Book is wrong and that it is only the 2009-S cents that are copper?

I think what he is saying (and with my research as well) Only the special Satin and Proof sets are supposed to weigh 3.1/3.2 grams if you have a Business strike 2009 Penny that weighs 3.1/3.2 grams and is NOT a proof or satin finish then you have something. Which is what I have. It is definitely not a Proof penny or a Satin finish. I have another 2009 D Presidency Business strike penny that weighs as it should 2.5 grams.

Sure I might be searching for a unicorn coin by looking for a 2009 Memorial Cent, but I am not holding my breath. The true transition in this case would be the compositional change from the collector's bronze cents to the standard copper coated zinc clad of today.

I just read this on Coin Community "In "Letters" in the October 18, 2016 edition of the Numismatic New "Compositional varieties exist for 2009 Lincoln cents" covers Proofs & Satin Finish cents struck on zinc planchets. Every Proof and Satin Finish cents was supposedly struck in the original 1909 solid bronze planchets." Well, I'm so exhausted right now, I'll need to work on this later. It seems that there are other transitional cents to search for.

Hey Shaun Kelton I think I have what you are talking about; if so I keep one or two for you. I do not have a 2009 Lincoln Cent. Although; what I think I have is the other way around. I have a couple of heavy (After v1982 ) Lincoln Shield s and Lincoln Memorial Coin that go heavy and liter on both coins ,by hand held weight feeling. When I get a coin scale,I let you know what I find out As well as hold a couple for you. Thank again Shaun K W.
