Terrible news, but it has to be told. Thank you guys ... so much. Yes, the drought has had a hand in this, but the massive population booms (Las Vegas, Phoenix & vicinity) contributed more. All combined, the river supplies water to over 80, 000,000 (80 million people) including agriculture & 29 Indian reservations. A couple of weeks ago I had heard that the river dribbling into Lake Powell has been shut-off. The SW has been stuck in a "dry river bed with a paddle!" Greed, money & power has been the main cause. The Colo. River no longer flows past Yuma and no longer reaches MX & the Gulf of CA. More housing still being built to gain the government the almighty tax dollar. The gov. does nothing right, except arguably fighting and winning wars. They have too much power and I don't see them choosing anything different. They'll drain it to the last drop & dollar for their own benefit and not ours. They live in their own world, apart from the rest. They serve themselves, only! They'll blame Climate Cange, so they can garner more control, power and money, by mandating us to pay for their subservient laws & treatment, not only for the SW, but for the entire country. More to say, but few read past the first 50 words. Sadly, I would imagine many do not know the crux of the problem and even more don't want to hear it, or know it. God Bless you two for trying to inform all of us.

You are spot on correct. I’m a born and raised Vegas boy. I remember the overflow at the damn. I’m tired of people blaming a drought. I seem to be in this argument everyday. We live in a desert. We live in the driest state in America. We rely on 100 year and 50 year rains. We had no problems when we were a population of 200,000 with millions of visitors. Then the Mirage was built. What I call the beginning of corporate Vegas. After that the mega casino race began. Massive number of great paying jobs became available. The gold rush began and our cities population grew bigger and bigger with every hotel that opened needing anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 employees to operate. Here we sit at a population of 3 million. Like I’ve always said and believe,,,,”it’s a population problem not a drought problem”

The property owner took my papers, sat me down with a glass of water and made a phone call. After a moment he handed the phone to me and it was explained to me that I had nothing to worry about...my name and SS# was on those papers because the State Official was "confused." The owner kept my papers, I finished the job. A year later I did "Phase 2" of the project for the owner F.O.C. with no questions asked. I "understood" I owed him. Never heard anything further regarding the matter on those papers, nor did we ever meet again after I finished Phase 2. We were square on the matter.

I grew up in Vegas and have lived here since 1969. When I came home after discharge from the military in 1981, Hoover Dam was overflowing its spillways. What a sight to see! I had no idea that this day would eventually come. Spent many days fishing striper boils at the back of Vegas Wash and Government Wash and jumping off the cliffs. What is so upsetting about it is that Las Vegas residents continue to conserve and use less water, but for every gallon saved, developers use that available water to just build more and more homes in the valley.

Why are they saying there is a drought in the desert? Does that even make sense? I can tell you why the water is falling. Farmers with deep well irrigation, and you can see this on google earth, are sucking the aquifer dry, and the lake is seeping in to re-fill it. There is no amount of rain that the desert historically gets that will make up for this massive usage. The aquifer is 3/4 depleted, and will dry up in the next 2 decades leaving little drinking or farming water for use, and the entire southwest is going to feel that really badly.

Sad to see this happening, and yet you see so much being wasted in the phoenix and surrounding areas. the one that gets me is seeing irrigation around farm land and water flowing down the side of roads and sometimes flooding over the roads. this will go on for months before the irrigation leak is fixed.

When I first heard about the body in the barrel and the ensuing investigation, it uncovered some interesting facts and theories. The body had shown signs that the person had been shot and the shoes that the person was wearing was consistent with clothing designs of the 70's or 80's. It has also been said that the bodies of people that were murdered and stuffed into barrels like this was consistent with the mob. It's likely that this person was the victim of a mob hit since Las Vegas is a short drive away. I've also heard more stories of more more human remains being found. One story revealed that a human jawbone was found. It's likely that more human remains will be found as Lake Mead continues to dry up.

Without a doubt, reminds me of the movie "Casino" where the Robert DeNiro character is talking about how scary it is to go into the desert because they'll never find your body if you ever get whacked out there, and now we have the bodies from 40 or 50 years ago suddenly turning up!

It's so sad, when a lake disappears. There was a lake not far from the town where I lived as a child - I remember people went there to swim and all, it was like a little beach by the forrest. By the time I was 10 it completetly dried up and never came back. Allegedly the cause was a coal mine some miles away disturbing some underground streams so they changed direction - nature is a very delicate ecosystem: you dig a hole somewhere and a lake disappears somewhere else.

I live in vegas and litteraly less than a year ago I would go swimming with my now husband and his family in lake mead. Prices going up here and now we don't even have a lake to go to with barely any watermarks or attractions. Makes it harder and harder to live here with what little there is to do already. They focus more on the strip and building housing for more ppl but not keeping the desert livable lol.
