NOOOOO! | That '70s Show 2x2 REACTION | Season 2 Episode 2 

I had the dvd set for all seasons and they all stayed the same quality. When I started watching it on streaming apps I got the quality change as well where certain shots looked zoomed in and I never saw those on the dvds

When they originally aired the show it was in the 4:3 format. If you look all the shots are composed so the main action is in the old square frame. However they shot the full 16:9 frame since they knew it was the future standard for TV. My hunch is that on some shots they only could get a clean 4:3 frame, and the full 16:9 captured the edges of the set, lighting rigs, or other stuff. Thus when the film was re-scanned for Hi-Def 16:9 broadcast and streaming, they had to zoom in on those shots to get a 16:9 frame. Another possibility is the original film for that shot was damaged and they had to use an old standard def 4:3 video source. Might be a combination of the two.

I kinda like the quality dropping..keep in mind this was 20 plus years ago....and I kinda like the grainy caus it feels like the 70s....

The camera quality issue is only for a few episodes so I wouldn’t worry about it. Asked reddit the same thing when I went thru this season

I’ve noticed that certain shots are really grainy and old looking whereas the majority look perfectly fine. Must have just been a camera thing at the time, ya know.
