Story:
The play "Nora (A Doll's House)" is a play in three acts by the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen. The drama premiered in 1879 is one of the most performed plays worldwide.
It deals with the life of Nora Helmer, who lives in the "cozy and tasteful, but not luxurious" house of her husband like in a "dollhouse". All purchases and the education of children are taken over by maids or servants. During the play Nora realizes her life situation and decides to leave her husband and the children.
This end shocked Ibsen's contemporaries so much that he had to rewrite the end at the premiere in Copenhagen. In Germany, an actress refused to play the role of Nora. In England, the piece was banned. Only in 1880 could "Nora" be performed with the end of the playwright in Munich.
On the play itself, Ibsen writes in 1878: "A woman can not be herself in the society of the present, an exclusively male society, with men-written lawyers and prosecutors and judges judging female behavior from the male point of view."
The play Nora is counted among Ibsen's socio-realistic pieces, in which the playwright tries to portray the reality of life of the nascent citizen tower in Norway in a naturalistic way. Based on the story of the lawyer Torvald Helmer and his wife Nora, Ibsen creates a drama about the problems and contradictions of his time.
