Nordco CX Spiker - Inside the Cab and Walk Around

Walk around and in cab view of the Nordco CX Spiker machine. This machine
will drive spikes at 2200 pound of down pressure. The clamps that go under the
tie are called nippers which pull the tie up close to the base of the rail and
hold it there until the spike is driven. This spiker will also gauge the rail which on
typical track is 56 and 1/2 inches between the rail head as measured 5/8's of an
inch below the top of the rail head.
No machine is appreciated more on a tie gang than the spiker, golly what
an incredible amount of manual labor driving spikes this machine saves from
having to drive spikes by hand.

Lever on left or right of the bin brings it in and you push it towards the back of bin it will activate a vibrator when it reaches the back . And then the save lever you pull forward and it will then push all the spikes closer. You can do this over and over and over till it literally over fills into the feeder seat lol or jam with a massive mound . In side the compartment is the vibrator yes under there is a pistol to push the spikes in . The guns we like to call them guns 1. 2 . 3.4 from left spiker seat to right . All the guns can be adjusted or Depth and position if you are safety spiking or any spike pattern . Next you have valve bank controls the guns hydraulic cooler on top. Can by pass that right to battery . The valves in front of engine you can put it into summer winter. Ac and heater . Right side valve bank controls everything else forward reverse and such . And thr other set of valve banks controls guns 1 and 2 . Move down thay side you should have a hydraulic manual pump to add fluid to the tank. Also. You'll have your break lock ups there if you die and have to tow the machine you can manually put it into neutral and tow or push but no breaks so it's best to attach it to something. Haha. Behind the door is the storage bin. Tool lock up

Noise: I can't speak to this machine, but one of the many things I used to do at the plant I retired from was run a big double blanking press. We used to pierce (the product looked like giant washers, only with a small central hole) steel up to almost a half inch thick, but most of the time .375" thick. Made a big noise ever cycle, about the same as a rifle shot. Every 6 seconds. Add to that the noise of all the various systems for handling the blanks and palletizing them. People couldn't get over how noisy it was, even with hearing protection. The thing was though, you listened: if something went sideways, the sound would tell you before your eyes would. So you learned all the "good" noises and all the "bad" noises, and I wouldn't be surprised if the operators of that spiker do the same.

I've worked the NORDCO spiker and the older zappers, feed set drive, the person feeding the spike rails is usually the dirtiest from the steel dust coming from the spikes, the spike bin has the vibrator and there's a short conveyor that feeds the spikes.

This is a great example of engineering that works. Being an engineer, I know many engineers who can design pretty things that don't work well or don't work at all. This is just about functional engineering you design it based on the starting function - carrying spikes in a bin and then move to each next function stack the spikes in proper alignment, drive the spikes, move to next setup, repeat, etc. This is just cool as all get out :) Thanks for the in depth views!

@ralfie8801
@ralfie8801 3 года назад
6777 Productions They have to work on the same tie until it's finished, the spiker heads just aren't tied together. Whichever person is moving the machine at the time just watches for the other's spike driver head to raise up and away from the tie to know he's ready to move forward. Leaving the spiker head down while advancing can rip the machine apart.
@6777Productions
@6777Productions 3 года назад
@@ralfie8801 Ah okay. I see what you mean. So the driver just watches the side of the machine to know when to advance. And since they are not tied together, if only one side is needed, the other side isn't constantly going up and down. I think I'm beginning to understand
@ralfie8801
@ralfie8801 3 года назад
6777 Productions That's pretty much it, just keep in mind that either operator can move the machine at any given time if needed. I think they just decide who's going to be the main guy before they get started for the day and maybe switch out with each other during the day to reduce mental fatigue a bit. I only worked on the machines, I never paid attention to who actually ran them at any given time or how they decided who was in charge.

Checked down the comments before posting this question to see if there's an answer already. Didn't see one. Does the operator set and drive the spike purely by eye? Is there something akin to a gunsight or marking that helps him align the the spike above and into the hole? If it's all done by eye, then how many bent and mis-driven spikes does it take to learn how to aim and hit the target consistently? 😉 Really enjoying all of your MOW videos. Watching trains running is fun, but I find how everything that enables a train to roll down the tracks really fascinating. Thanks for your clear, understandable explanations.
