“The agenda setters could have done more for the wellbeing of young people”
Ester lives in Denmark, and she was in fifth form of college when the first lockdown was applied. She remembers the isolation and loneliness during the pandemic shutdowns. Ester wish the people who set the lockdown agenda had done more to secure the welfare of young people.
In Denmark, school closures or adjusted operations mostly affected older students. Denmark and Norway were the only countries to implement school closures at all levels, including early childhood education.
In March 2020, all schools and universities, libraries, all leisure activities and all-day care facilities were closed down. Closure of restaurants and malls, border closure as well a ban of assemblies with more than 10 participants also introduced. Denmark was one of the first countries in Europe to enter a nationwide lockdown and therefore took prevention measures at a very early stage with restrictive measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
In December 2020 the second nationwide lockdown was initiated. Once again, distance learning was introduced. From the first of March 2021, Denmark began to phase out restrictions for most of the shops and outdoor cultural and sports activities. A few weeks later students were allowed to attend school physically one day a week. On the 6th of May all students in primary school, vocational education and graduating students within secondary education, and adult education were allowed back in school with 100 percent attendance.
On the same day, all sport activities for children and young people opened. On the 21st of May 2021, the remaining students in secondary education, adult education and students in higher education were allowed back in school with 100 percent attendance.
By the 31st of January 2022, all restrictions in Denmark were lifted
