This is the first German radio I have attempted but I'm finding it easier to work on than I expected. It still has its puzzling moments but I think it will turn out to be a great radio. This video brings us pretty much to the completion of the electrical repair and restoration.

I've been shooting for a knighthood but having a cap named after me is quite an honour, thanks Don. Your cap came out very good too BTW 🙂 Good work on the radio, it's working well. Looking forward to the cabinet 👍🙂

How about a plug from Dave in light of the "Tipton Capacitor" honorary title. Love to see Don break the 1k subscribers mark 👍

Hi Greg Firstly, I live in Perth, on the West coast of Australia. We get lots of SW from Indonesia and SE Asia in general. I have also noticed an increase in Chinese language SW broadcasts, some of them coming in very strong. Hard to tell where they originate from. There are also some Chinese English language broadcasts from time to time - early evening our time. They tend to swamp anything from Europe or the USA I am developing an interest in Short Wave listening / DXing. Until recently I didn't have a good receiver and don't currently have anything that will receive SSB. I used to be into CB radio when I was younger (in the 1970's) but lost interest when it went UHF / FM. It just wasn't the same. No, I don't have an Amateur license might consider it in the future. Thanks for your interest! Cheers

Hi Don, good progress with your Rigoletto and as a positive side effect, you learn a new language. When restuffing these old capacitors I use the tar from the old one, cut it into smaller pieces, restuff it in and melt it with a heat gun. Looks like original afterwards, the smell is bearable and, from a sustainability point of view, you are re-using as much as you can from the old one. The red capacitors we call "Wima Malt drops" in Germany, and in 99% of the cases they are bad. Good luck with the cabinet.
@Donno308
@Donno308 2 года назад
Thanks ThoMe. I dare say I’ll know a few more words of German by the time I’m finished! Wima Malt Drops, eh? There’s another one I haven’t changed - it’s a darker red - more brown but otherwise similar. Are they the same type of cap? Maybe I should change it too? Yes, the cabinet will be interesting. I’ll try for the high gloss finish but I don’t know how I’ll go with that.

Very well done Don. I like these old German radios and enjoy watching the work being done. I recently replaced the FM front end in a Grundig 2520 with a unit from Grundig 1060. Works beautifully. A very satisfying repair.
@Donno308
@Donno308 2 года назад
Hi Phillip. Yes, I imagine the FM modules would be fairly interchangeable between models. In fact there are a lot of similarities between brands, eg. Grundig, Nordmende, Telefunken etc. Thanks for your interest! Cheers

When you're trying to work out the value of the dropper resistor, it's a good idea to set the correct supply voltage using a Variac and measuring the heater voltage. When the heater voltage is 6.3Vac, the supply voltage is correct. You can then select a dropper resistor to give you the correct B+.
@Donno308
@Donno308 Год назад
Cheers Roger. That seems like a logical approach. I must admit I was blundering around a bit with this one.

Hello there and greetings from germany! I do radio repair myself (no videos though) :D Primarily german sets and old sovjet-radios (tube and/or transistorized) because they are easiert to get. Oh and i subbed for your channel - coming from Caldeira's channel. Keep up the good work!
@Donno308
@Donno308 2 года назад
Hi Kevka. Firstly, thanks for subscribing to my little channel. Caldeira’s channel is awesome. I was watching it long before I started doing my own videos, along with David Tipton. Unfortunately German radios are hard to get in Australia. I’m enjoying working on this one though and I’ll get another one if I can. The next part will be delayed a little as I’m on holidays. Cheers

Hi Don. As the current through that resistor is not pure DC, but a series of charging pulses to the first filter capacitor, you cannot use simple ohms law to calculate the filtered voltage. Likewise, you can't calculate the power dissipation in such a resistor either, it will be much higher, due to the high form factor of the current waveform. As a first approximation, the RMS current through the resistor will be about 2.4 times the DC output current, for full wave silicon rectifiers. I hope that gives you an explanation for how the circuit worked out. I enjoy your videos. 😊
@Donno308
@Donno308 2 года назад
Hi Stuart. Thanks for this insight. It does explain why I wasn’t getting the results I was expecting. I didn’t really consider the rectified ac waveform - just treated it as dc. No wonder I was getting confused. At present the radio is working well without a resistor, the increased output being compensated for by the ac input going to the 240V tap. Do you think that’s a safe way to go or is the resistor necessary for other reasons? Cheers
@stuartirwin3779
@stuartirwin3779 2 года назад
@@Donno308 I think that if the voltages are correct, no resistor will be necessary. I'd certainly keep it on the 240v tap, as there is the 6.3 volt heater supply to consider also.

Great work, Don! The radio's coming along nicely. I'm taking notes for my own Grundig radio restoration which I hope to begin in summer. Looking forward to the alignment. Your SWL channels sound a lot like what I get in Japan. Lots of Chinese, Korean, Indonesian and sometimes Russian stations but only the strongest ones come in. QRM from power lines, LED lights, TVs, etc. drown out the weaker ones with whole bands nothing but noise. I'm now building a new shack in a new house so maybe my luck will change in a few months. BTW, Digikey gives me free shipping to Japan if I keep my orders above $50US. Might work for you, too, in Oz.
@Donno308
@Donno308 2 года назад
Thanks! I get most of my capacitors etc. from Carl's Capacitors & radio parts but Digikey have a range of caps that Carl doesn't usually carry. If you're doing a Grundig you should check out Electronics Old and New by M Caldeira (if you haven't already) He knows more about Grundigs and other German radios than I ever will. Unfortunately I live near power lines, an (electric) railway line and every other kind of QRM imaginable. It takes a pretty good radio to get through all that.

Hello again Don. This is coming on really well, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching. You are probably better off leaving the voltage input setting at 240v, if your incoming line voltage is in the region of 230v. Our nominal voltage in the UK is 230v, but It often fluctuates between 228v to 246v where I live. Once again a superb and interesting video. Look forward to seeing the next episode. Cheers Chris.

@Donno308 2 года назад
Thanks Chris. Our line voltage does fluctuate a fair bit. I haven't made my mind up yet but I do notice the sound quality on FM deteriorates if the voltage is a bit low. I haven't made my mind up yet.

Just a point Don, the voltages given on the circuit diagram would have been for an analogue meter of lower input resistance. Like an Avo. Most modern meters have a very high impedance. I've been caught trying to match voltages on older equipment a few times myself.
@Donno308
@Donno308 2 года назад
You certainly have a point, Michael. I have a 1000 ohm / volt analogue meter and the radio is still on the bench. I'll re-check the voltages and see what I get. I might need that resistor after all.
@MichaelBeeny

@@Donno308 It will probably be OK straight from the rectifier. It's mostly an issue measuring voltages on valves via high resistance.

It's not unusual for the bass control to act as you have shown. It seems that the thought process is that - turn the bass down for more bass and turn the treble up for more treble. I've come across this design philosophy in some Grundig sets.

I guess it depends on where you live. In 2000, Standards Australia issued a system Standard, AS60038, with 230V as the nominal voltage with a +10% to -6% variation at the point of supply. That said, most days it varies from 235 to 240 ish here in Perth.

17:50 RU-vid *really should be much more lenient* when it comes to commercial music picked up by a camera in videos like this. Situations like this are when commercial music is picked up, not intentionally, but by chance in the course of shooting the video. The music is, in effect, part of *'background noise"!*
