Great video, local lad born and bred, live on Womack Water, been on and off boats all my life. Ive done Breydon a couple of times. Your advice is well sound, can be scary especially in fog or low visibility. The tidal flow pinches towards Vauxhall bridge and it can be scary

Hi Antony. Thanks for the great comment. Love Womack water but don't get to go very often.

Coo, you must be lucky with the tides during the week you have in January. We often find that the times of low water through Great Yarmouth during winter aren’t always helpful, even though we love going south. Be aware that during the last winter we had more episodes where wind conditions in the North Sea had a ‘locking’ effect on the rivers, causing raised water levels, which also caused problems with getting under the Yarmouth bridges. Hopefully none of that will happen when you have your holiday. There’s a web app called ‘Project Troll’ which tracks the height under the lowest Great Yarmouth bridges which you might find helpful.

Good info. That's what this channel is all about.

Well if your hiring a boat, most tend to be of lower air draught so you should be fine anyway around slack water. Thanks for watching and for the great comment. Let us know what boat you have and we'll give you a wave if we're about.

Great Video Thought for taking the time to do it. We are on the broads 1st week in Aug and plan on taking this route. Was i bit apprehensive about traversing breydon, but this bid has made it look easy😅

The secret (not really a secret) is getting there at or around slack water. Then there will be very little, if any, tidal ebbs or flows to worry about. Go through mid tide and it can be a very different place. Don't do that. :-) Get your time right and you'll enjoy it. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

New to the channel and finding it most interesting! Would a vlog of the boat you have in a bit of detail, engine, sleeping arrangements etc and how easy it is to maintain and service etc with some rough costs? Looking at maybe getting something similar and would be interesting to know the costs involved with marina etc too 👍🏻

Hi Mathew. Yes, a more detailed boat tour and review is on the list along with the costs involved. As ever, thanks for the great comment and for watching in the first place of course.

The only trouble is most holidaymakers wont wait at Stracey arms or berny arms for correct tide before crossing Breydon.You also could have mentioned the Height posts at the bridges
@boatermike
@boatermike 9 дней назад
You are quite right. Which is fine if that's what they choose to do. For those that would like a nice easy crossing then follow what it tells you in the book (which is what this video is trying to show) and you shouldn't even have to worry to much about height boards as there will be plenty of height at those tides. Having said that, always check the boards. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

@@boatermike Holidymakers wont wait most of the time,say low tide is 1pm they wont wait until 6/7 pm to go thru Yarmouth and thats why height boards are important for hirers

Good video sir, do you know the location of the markers for the depth/ height that you need to know to cross under the bridges as im on a 35ft, 7ft air draft in August...?
@boatermike
@boatermike 27 дней назад
@chrisford3212 Thanks for the nice comment. There are two or three height boards along the stretch either side but with a 7 foot air draft you will have no problems getting under either bridge at slack water.

Hi Gary. My boat is 8'8" and when I go through at low water I have at least 2' clearance. Try and stick to slack water though (one hour after low water) as the tides and eddies will have stopped by then. Tidal flow through Great Yarmouth can be scary for the the uninitiated (and seasoned sailors as well).
@harveyhellewell5134
@harveyhellewell5134 21 день назад
i cross it quite often but at the opening as u go on from yarmouth can be a fight with the current if u catch it at the wrong time

i own a 44 foot 8ft air draft the lady lou and its a pain getting the tides right to get under both bridges
@boatermike
@boatermike 21 день назад
Hi Harvey. My boat is 8'8" and I go through at low water (not slack). I have around 2' clearance but the price you pay is strong currents and eddies. Slack water is one hour after low and all the tide and eddies have pretty much gone (mostly) but the water level can come up quite a bit in that hour though.
@harveyhellewell5134
@harveyhellewell5134 21 день назад
@@boatermike would you reccomed going through at slack or low tide i suppose slack so your no fighting the current trying to push you into them poles
@boatermike
@boatermike 21 день назад
@@harveyhellewell5134 Yes, slack every time. Unless you have height constraints like I do and need the maximum clearance. At low water, which is only an hour before slack you will be surprised how fast the current flows out of Great Yarmouth.

That is the best video of crossing Breydon I have seen. Thank you so much. We did the northern broads this year our first time but was too nervous to go further than the Windmill cate. Going back next April - my son wants to do the crossing (he drives the boat) so have sent him your video. Where did you stop on the Yare before the return crossing?
@boatermike
@boatermike Месяц назад
Hi. This is exactly what the video was intended to do. The two bases for crossing over are the Windmill cafe on the northern side (as in the video) and The old Berney arms on the southern tip of Breydon. Although you can start from where ever you like, just work the travel times out to get you to Gt Yarmouth at slack. Thanks for watching and for the great comment.
