This has been a long awaited video, where previously I made and was unable to find a lot of clips of some of the whistles 611 wore through the years, but now this Is the finalized version of it. I hope you enjoy this 20 minute long video of clips from 611 starting in 1982 and it goes all the way to present day. I would like to thank all of you who have supported the channel from the start, and I wanted to give credit to all of the people that I was able to use video footage from. A special thanks to the Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, who a couple of years ago released some good and rare footage of 611 making its final runs in 1994, included in this video the scene of 611 roaring through Rural Retreat Va. on the Roanoke to Bristol trip in late November of that year. Which you will see later in the video.
Thanks for watching and make sure to leave a comment of your thoughts on the video and please like and subscribe for more content like this, I may do more videos of locomotive’s whistles through the years, for example 4449.

#611 was pulling the 1st Excursion for the Norfolk Southern in 1982, and she continued on the excursion duties all the way until 1994.

@VirginianRailwayProductions
Looks like I’m going to have to update this video soon, sense now 611 has a new whistle as of 2023 I’m going to just add to this version of the various whistles, according to rumors the whistle now on 611 is the one owned by the Claytor family so I’ll update this video once more footage of 611 with the new whistle is released

I was going to say because the 611’s new whistle sounds similar to the one she wore in the 1990’s!

This is much better than the previous version of 611’s whistle! I’m glad you finally found videos from 1984
@VirginianRailwayProductions
Thanks, I was working on this for the past few days so I could have something better than my previous videos to upload to represent the new content I will be putting out.

@@VirginianRailwayProductions I believe the whistle she currently has on now used to belong to her sister No. 610

The 1987-1989 was my favorite whistle of hers. Can anyone fill me in on why that one in particular had like a squeak or squeal to it

That first whistle sounds exactly like Union Pacific 844 to me

It literally is the same exact whistle... Every single whistle in this video is the same exact whistle as 844, 3985, and 4014... N&W Js used the same Hancock 3 chimes that UP used on all their super steam engines.

11:58 this one has to be my favorite besides the one she wore between 1990 and 1994 it has a distinctive sound that makes it sound amazing

I noticed that the 611’s 1982 whistle sounds almost identical to 1984

1990 - 1994 has got to be my absolute favorite. It's so unbelievably harmonious, perfect for an engine of such stature as 611. It also reminds me of when I used to watch videos of 611 as a kid on one of the various tapes and CDs I had. Truly a special engine!

That 90-94 whistle is GOATED, gives gooseboomps in a melodic way

Let me take back of what I said about 611 wore SP 4449's old whistle. Here's the correction; during 2015, 611 first wore a UP style Hancock whistle, which belongs to Cheri George. Afterwards, in 2016, it was removed and replaced with Scott Lindsay's Hancock whistle during 2016. In 2023, No. 611 received a newly acquired Hancock whistle, which sounds almost similar to its 1980s-90s whistle.

@@trisb0999 Actually, I was told correctly that 611's 2023 onwards whistle is from a NP 2-8-8-4.

11:42 my favorite whistle

My personal favourite is the 1982 whistle, to me that just sounds the most like a "N&W J" - probably because this was most likely the whistle Pentrex sampled for Yesterday's Steam Across America. A close second would be the 90-94 whistle. In both cases it seems like a corrupted note gives each whistle a distinct sound, the 82 whistle seems to have trouble blowing the low note, giving it an almost screeching voice(a sound that was very common in high pressure steam engines, especially towards the end of the 1950s), meanwhile the '90 whistle has the opposite problem, it sounds like the higher notes are having more trouble, giving the whistle that iconic deep screaming voice as all the pressure goes to the low note. This is why locomotive whistles fascinate me so much, fundamentally all of these are just Hancock Long Bell 3's - the same whistle used by Frisco, Union Pacific, Southern, and Northern Pacific, among many others... Yet multiple copies of the same whistle on the same locomotive can sound completely different to each other.

And now 611 has yet another whistle as we speak as she's once again currently operating at Strasbourg, though it will be her last in there for awhile before returning to Roanoke
@VirginianRailwayProductions
They haven’t confirmed or announced yet of where 611 is going after strasburg, but I will say the two places we can guess is either Roanoke or Spencer NC.
