“What the Palestinians are asking is not the stars, the moon, and the sky. They are asking for their minimum basic, uncontroversial rights under International Law, which have been repeatedly certified in all the political, and legal, and human rights bodies in the world” Norman Finkelstein
@@punapeter They should start by asking their OWN governing body, who they elected, Hamas, why they spent billions of dollars on war tunnels instead of building power plants and water desalination plants and farms and infrastructure for their own people. And if they don't like Hamas, they should resist against them and elect a government who will support them and give them hope for the future.

I have never in 41 years of my life witnessed inhumanity like this. This man is a Guardian of Humanity at his age he is giving everything for a better World. Thank You professor Norman Finkelstein 🙏
Dr Norman Finkelstein, a true scholar and humanitarian. This man has scarified his whole career on getting the truth out about Isreal ethnic cleansing now genocide. Highest respect to this gentleman and happy to see at last the young generation awakens to what he has been saying for decades. Seeing this gives me great joy and hope that the world will become a better place because of you, the next generation on the rise. Salute to all of you, your All Brilliant
A real mensch, salt of the earth. What a conviction and unwavering commitment to truth. Deep respect to Norman and to the Columbia students who dare to raise their voices in defence of the downtrodden.
You can disagree with Norm on messaging and tactics but the devious chanting at the end seemed a tad disrespectful toward someone who is clearly well meaning, highly experienced and very respectful of Palestine activists. Talk about missing the point.
Yes. It seems that some people are devoted to their self-expression and not to the real political goal of really liberating and saving palestinian lives.
Why are people being so stubborn about the ”from the river to the sea…” slogan? I have heard Finkelstein argue against the use of it multiple times, for example in his discussion with BJG, and I find his argument very simple and persuasive. People, please respect the professor’s experience in activism and learn to think strategically! If the goal is to prevent deaths we should not dismiss criticism so lightly.
I'm Palestinian and agree with profesor. It should be "From the river to the sea, Palestinians will be free." To be strategic. Some people feel that is compromising Palestine. It's not. Equal Rights focus on this
From the river to the Sea is very poetic. Implying genocide into it is largely projection. As is the case with intifada. I believe using apartheid is less helpful as the analogy with South Africa isn't precise. What was genius about the anti apartheid movement was that it used their word against them. The same focus should be on Zionism, which must be shown to be an ideology of ethnic cleansing.
@@SuperKripke "from the river to the see, Palestinians will be free” diffuses the projection significantly. It gives way to the immediate necessity of Zios to retort, put them on the defense, instead of immediate projection and obfuscation. It also doesn't remove implications of genocide. At the least it leads to "Palestinians" are not free? Why?.
The problem I see with today’s left wing activists is they are more concerned with their own ego and their own status among their piers than they are concerned about effecting change on the issue they are protesting. It’a a manifesting of the me generation. That’s what I’ve at UNM where I’m a graduate student. I support the movement 1000%, but the activists are unhinged, yelling this very slogan into a megaphone, with a very aggressive energy. It’s so off putting.
Thanks for the video! I hope everyone there understood a legend was talking to them and sharing his profound wisdom. Dr. Finkelstein and his work will be reveled for centuries in the future, if we make it there
I love Norman and I'm happy for him bc he fought alone for years in seeking justice for Palestinians he even admitted he gave up on it bc no one wants to listen but now things have changed ....free palestine ❤
I am glad Norman Finkelstein delivered these supportive, extremely pragmatic/helpful and informative remarks before the suppression of free speech and protests at Columbia revved up. I just bought several of his books & can’t wait to binge them! Especially his book on Aland Derschowitz, which sadly isn’t available on Kindle or cheap-o paperback. Unfortunately, UT Austin & tons of other schools are leveraging Columbia’s high profile current visibility to do the same. I am at UT Austin and Governor Abbott unleashed the law on campus this week (UT Austin is a public university.) I appreciate the activism at Columbia, but I regret the BS over-reactions to it & the backlash’s distortion & shameless exploitation of what’s happening. Keep it up Columbia, even though universities nationwide, public and private, & idiots like Greg Abbott are imposing punitive and unconstitutional punishments. Their current suppression shows ur on the right side paving the way for the truth prevailing over power. The public isn’t fooled by the tired-a$s misrepresentations of your protests. Things have changed since they went all McCarthyism on Claudine Gay & __. They’re so threatened by campus protests and students support for Palestine, it’s pathetic to see them make campus look like a police state, but the optics will backfire! Just like the dogs & firehose of Jim Crow states during Civil Rights.
Dr Finkelstein modestly starts by saying he cant give a speech. Then delivers an electrifying call for struggle quoting Rosa Luxemburg. He is simply brilliant.
It's absolutely insane after that entire thoughtful answer Norman Gabe the dip shit college student just got up and started chanting "from the river to the sea"
@@cloudfloat4179 to be fair, he appeared to smile as they started the unamended chant. almost seemed proud of them in a way. but yeah, most intellectual/academic types are pretentious pricks 😅
@@broilergivenquirkilythat simply is true. Depends, but I would say a majority are humble. If you work in academia you will spend a lot of your time being challenged and often proven incorrect. If you have an ego, you will be repeatedly embarrassed.
Exactly how do the Palestinians not have equal rights? As far as I am aware, a citizen of a state is not entitled to the rights afforded by another state. Within the state of Israel, all peoples have equal rights. Regarding freedom of movement, I see this claim repeated often but it is not customary for a state to allow freedom of entry to foreign nationals. I'm mainly speaking about Gaza before the war because the status quo in the West Bank is not right and all Israeli settlers should move to the main Israeli territory.
34 minutes of stinkelfiend completely erased in the last 10 seconds 💀 what a great microcosm to sum up his existence and the privileged, online opinions of Palestine and Israel.
Norman Finkelstein is a narcissist psychopath who has dedicated his life, for some reason, to annihilating his Jewishness from himself. It brings me joy to know that he is mortal as any man, and will be gone soon.
Absolutely! Had to google the meaning of GOAT, but yes, he definitely is THE G.O.A.T. Wonderful, genuine, funny, intelligent, precise, and so full of determination to make the truth known. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

It’s playing to the lowest common denominator, why lower our standards for the comfort of colonizers and those that identify with them? How will Palestinians be free without Palestine being free?
@@robertb7643It's a change in a starting point to the same point. I don't see how it lowers the standard of the statement or saying "Palestinians" denies "Palestine". Zios and those who back them will not be receptive. Forcing them to move extra steps is a good thing. It gives our side the upper hand right off the gate. Disrespectful children. Those loudest are sometimes the most repu... you know what lemme stop being a keyboard warrior while they're actually out there
I understand what you're saying but this is a rare point on which I disagree with prof.Finkelstein whom I have a lot of respect for. If people started taking the endless manipulations of bigoted colonialists into account, no slogan would be able to exist. If you look at the fact that Israel doesn't even spare Palestinian babies from their typical dehumanization of Arabs and Muslims, you'd realise that a country that's fine with twisting the corpses of innocent babies with 'their parents elected Hamas' or 'they would have grown up to become the same' is incapable of letting even the most straightforward and innocuous slogan to exist without being somehow linked to hatred of Jews.

Norman Finkelstein is a brilliant, incisive, thinker and a brilliant strategist and tactician: He would make a great leader for the political movement that the U.S. sorely lacks.
the radical person using the phrase he thought should be tweaked to reach more people was disregarded. We need as many people as we can for this movement. Norm is thoughtful and awesome. ❤
@@collectivecommentary123 possibly but disagreeing I think is contextual -- to disagree it seems to me requires something more considered and less formulaic. It is quite possible that Norman is wrong and the original cri de coeur is more compelling but Norman would always say you have to make the case and the respondent did not -- it felt unreflective and automatic in a way we sounded in the 60's and now . We never really learned reflection. So I grant you may be right but my gut says no
@@bobmcgahey1280 the process of reflection is a long road. you don't seem to understand that. both the protester at the end as well as norman understand that. it was not a "diss".
indeed such courage and integrity that he supported October 7th murders and gang rapes, strange how the likes of you hero worship an apologist for genocide and mass gang rape
Funny how his great integrity and knowledge isn't invited on mainstream news channels to get his valuable opinion on this Israel-Palestine issue, eh? (he said, knowing full well the corporate media's cowardly lack of journalistic integrity, along with most politicians and any people who are not against this atrocious genocide by Israel)
This young woman, with the black glasses, when he said “to get out of one’s naval, to crawl out of one’s ego” - he was talking to you. [although it is certain he prepared his remarks, with painstaking detail, your behavior infuriated and offended me and my entire, very FOB, Palestinian family. Initially, I thought oh dear she doesn’t realize how much she is in the frame and she’s prob so embarrassed she’s just on her phone. And then for like 30 minutes, it occurred to me you were bothered, annoyed and making fun of this man, less than three feet of his face, I mean how rude! And disrespectful just eye rolling and not giving him a second of attention or respect - the man is speaking, when someone is speaking, we don’t speak over them. Our friends would say no shhh let me finish. We would not then just ignore them and kill time until they finished what they were trying to communicate to us. (roll the tape) you did not listen to 60 seconds of his speaking with any sustained focus. I don’t know anything about you, and if you are Palestinian we need to talk asap. If you are not, you are not helping this movement with this attitude or behavior. And I am your age. So this is a peer. Lots of love. Hope we can connect.
Proud moment for me! I was briefly somewhat involved in the Palestinian rights movement when I was in my 30s in the early 2000s. The groundswell of involvement in this issue- largely led by youth- is impressive and heart warming! In the 1980s we watched South African apartheid go down to less international pressure than we’re seeing today- let’s hope this creates material change on the ground! ✌️❤️🇺🇸🤞
Bravo! Love Dr Finkelstein. So glad he’s here and we all able to benefit from his knowledge, his long establish experience and credentials in the struggle for truth & justice.
@@iBeatBoxz8 He is a walking lie. Very funny though. For some reason he hates his minority downstair neighbors. Maybe because they are the wrong skin color.
How was it dumb? Should everyone pretend as if Norman knows more than everyone else just because they wanted to listen to what he had to say? He could be right, he could be wrong. That's up to us all to reflect on. And reflection is a long road.
Norman could easily have preached to the choir yet chose not to. And the crowd could have blindly taken his advice yet chose not to. It shows that they all have everyone's best interests in mind. You seem like you want everyone to sync together and become a monolith. Now that could be harmful. We need a diversity of opinion to move forward and learn.
Thank you for recording and posting this. It's awesome to hear questions and pushback. Radical movements don't exist to attract huge numbers of allies, but to attract perhaps fewer high quality accomplices. Because we understand intersectionality in a way they didn't. So the movement is deeper and more global.
Opposite IRL is true. Boomer lefties made the same arguments and were convinced by the righteousness of their cause without considering broader political realities or attempting to hit 'em where it really hurt: their 💰 gravy trains. Radical movements hinge on coalition-building and having allies that often aren't transmutable or even adaptable to other causes for which we strive. Other than all-out violence, which usually doesn't work in the long run, this is the only way radical movements have made any progress. The blowhard at the end was being [emotionally] selfish, arrogant, performative, and most importantly: unhelpful.
Funny ending. They heard nothing, they learned nothing. Young people always: idealistic and obnoxious. Always the conflict, between the two traits. Let's hope the idealism soon makes a little more progress over the obnoxiousness than it has so far, for the sake of the Palestinians.
At least as a token of Respect for him, they should have said "Palestinians" But no, they insisted. Still, he would rather hear them say what they want, than witness empty squares, and no solidarity.
The learnt to not be manipulated. He’s right language is important, changing that slogan to acquiesce to the only group of people who would be bothered by it - colonizers and colonizer sympathizers at the direction of a ‘reformed’ Israeli who is underhandedly threatening the young lady by asking her name saying it would get her in trouble multiple times. The Israelis are scared of these protests they are scared of U.S Public support fading. Hence this shill shows up.
@@seif.z Absolutely. At first, I thought -- and it would have been rather moving, like the ending of a good movie -- they were going to change the chant. But they're young and, God love them, they're raging against the machine.
Sad ending, actually. I would hope she is not representative for the group. I think it was also her, by voice and disguise, that shouted with another occasion "I am Hamas" in front of some policemen. Not the way to serve the current cause, or any cause, imho.

This type of analysis (going to respect his wishes and not refer to this as "a speech") is precisely what the institutions that purport to transmit knowledge (at a massive and effectively gatekeeping price, of course) do not want you to have as a part of your intellectual toolkit.
Which is why it's so maddening that his very wise, sage, battle-hardened bit of advice was not only refused entry into their "intellectual toolkits", but in fact breathlessly thrown back in his face for its own sake by an unserious grandstander at the end there.
