I'm glad you referenced Paul Desmond. Brubeck too often gets credited with having written Take Five, and I don't think he works too hard to correct that misconception.

Thanks Mark for the 18 hours of labor you put into today's episode. It was nice to see a jazz box on the show.

Nice Take Five. IMO you can play jazz on any guitar. Same with rock & roll, or whatever. The guitars can handle it…it’s the humans that have the issues.

Thank you for doing this guitar, Mark. I know it's not how you roll, but this is probably my favorite guitar Gibson ever made and I was wondering if we would ever see one on the show. BTW, Roy Clark played one of these with a Bigsby.

Lovin' the show Mark and Jen and watching every day over here in Perth, Scotland - that Korina V from Tuesday maaaan......! So It's my birthday on Friday 23rd so if you can manage a shout out across the pond that would make my day. Not giving my age away but something from 1965 would be particularly appropriate for Flattop Friday.... Peace Ed x

I'm an LP and tele player for sure but this was very cool to watch! One of the very first guitars I ever used was a 55-56 Gibson ES-175 with 2 p90s that my uncle let me borrow. It was cool but I hadn't been playing long so I couldn't really make it sound good. One of my cousins has it now I think, I wish I could get it back though!

Thank you very much Mark. I love me some rock and roll, and Blues, but I also really love me some "yazz". You didn't do too bad and it made me smile. Love an L-5 and almost any archtop electric or acoustic makes me happy. So, good on ya!

I like the way Mark says he can't play jazz- pretty modest Mark. Playing that Wes Montgomery tune is not easy but you make it look easy- sounds great. Brubeck is another true classic. I like the way you ended that Nick Charles tune as well. I can whistle Take 5 note for note but I can't play guitar mon.

People calling them jazz boxes and jazz players using them doesn't mean that's all they're good for. Ax of choice for many r&r and c&w players for decades.

The L5 is iconic in country music as well, being the axe of choice for Mother Maybelle Carter (although an acoustic non cutaway model). Mark, I will personally send you a genuine American dollar if you bust out some "Wildwood Flower".

Gorgeous! You “play jazz” way better than I ever could. Don’t sell yourself short! Jerry Miller of The Moby Grape did (and most of the time still does) all of his beautiful fluid lead lines on an L5. There’s a great story behind his L5. Robert White from Motown in Detroit played the intro to My Girl (and everything else he played on) on an L5. Put some heavy flatwounds on that beauty, and you’ll really be good to go! I have some original NOS Gibson flats in the orange box (ca. 1950s/‘60s) if you’re interested. Great video! Thanks!
