Today's video takes place on Norris lake, a smallmouth bass stronghold located in East Tennessee in early January. Today's video brought on an entirely new set of challenges on a lake that I have never targeted bass on before until the video today. Cold water coupled with very clear water visibility is a perfect storm for bass to set up in a winter deep water pattern that is ideal for targeting with a vertical presentation such as with a Damiki rig that is a staple in the region. This trip to Norris lake is a great example of what a little patience and persistence can lead to during a day on the water.

Ryan Epps Fishing maybe we could make that happen next year. A friend of mine has been up there and caught 5 smallmouth. 3 were over 4 pounds.

Ryan Epps Fishing certainly didn’t mean to make it sound like I was trying to get you to go fishing with me. Truth is I’m 41 years old and always wanted to learn how to catch smallmouth. I bought me a bass tracker boat and I’m ready to learn. Anyway I thought maybe we could put together a good video. I love the way you talk, think, and how ocd you are. lol I’m the same way. Not trying to overstep your boundaries but I once worked with a friend who fished dale hollow with billy westmoreland He said he was a great person and knew what it it takes to catch big smallmouth.

Thanks for sharing. When scanning for smallmouth, were most fish returns in the main two lakes, or in the creek arms?

Just subscribed. Really enjoyed the last couple vids I watched. The one with the A-rig and this one. You do a FANTASTIC job of in depth explanation of not only what you are using but why you are using the gear, line lure, etc. Keep up the great videos and thank you!

What patterns would work in December winter?
@RyanEppsFishing
@RyanEppsFishing 3 года назад
Depends on conditions but some popular options are the damiki rig, a blade bait, jerkbaits, small body crankbaits, etc.

How do u know they are there if you can’t see them till they come up off the bottom and are you going to sell your helix 7 thanks for the videos

90% of the time I don’t know they are there until I drop a bait down and no i’m not selling my helix.

You'll have them guys on Norris wondering what you're doing out there in the middle of the lake with your head down LOL! Tell them it only works on Cherokee
@cherokeelaketennessee7895
@cherokeelaketennessee7895 4 года назад
Did you see all the ones coming up with the one at 7:30? Been thinking the fish on Douglas should be the same, they just don't see that bait like the fish do on Cherokee and SOHO. I've got a buddy that fishes SOHO and they pull them out of 50 - 60 feet.
@cherokeelaketennessee7895
@cherokeelaketennessee7895 4 года назад
I rig up a damiki like normal and then put a drop shot hook about a foot above it with another bait, I bet those fish giving chase might grab one like that but might need 10# instead of the normal 6 or 8 pound. Great video, fired me up seeing them wolf packs

Ive never found a large enough population of smallmouth on Douglas in the winter for this to be effective but I will say I have found several schools of smallmouth on Cherokee this year and last year that were just as aggressive but it takes a long time to find them and you have to look in places that are not so obvious on a map card as the community holes are.

@@cherokeelaketennessee7895 I think it's because Douglas dont have as much bottom structure as them lakes you mentioned .

Thanks for sharing Ryan, i just received my 7’6 duckett triad crankin rod. Super excited to try it out. Do you ever use any chartreuse dip? I put a touch on the tail to get bites from pressured fish.
@RyanEppsFishing
@RyanEppsFishing 4 года назад
I have been very happy with all my duckett rods, I have never used the triad cranking rods but I did just recently pick up a micro magic pro cranking rod and I am really liking it so far. I don’t use dyes very much but I have before and still will from time to time, I will say that if you ever look at most all threadfin shad they all have a little chartreuse on their tails.

Great video now I had a question because I'm new to this deal if you cant see the fish till they come up off the bottom how do you know they are there
@RyanEppsFishing
@RyanEppsFishing 4 года назад
I just look for offshore structure that they tend to winter around then if there is bait near by I just drop a bait down and see if I can get them to show themselves. If nothin comes up within 15 min or so then I pack up and move to tha next spot.

Enjoy the videos next time on Norris drop a gold 3/8oz blade bait to the bottom pull up till you feel the flutter then drop back down and repeat chartreuse works good too smallmouth heaven gonna learn the damiki rig thanks for sharing this with me🐵

I am wanting to throw blade baits more and honestly that was a goal of mine this winter was to get better with one but i just haven’t thrown it enough yet.

That lake is my favorite Cherokee lake was slow in 2019 and I didn’t really get to go to Douglas a lot this year maybe 1 time but I caught some good large mouth at Norris this 2019,2020 but I didn’t even catch a smallmouth at Cherokee 2019,2020 maybe 2 and that’s all
@RyanEppsFishing
@RyanEppsFishing 4 года назад
I plan on going back to norris later this year to target some largemouth but I would say the smallmouth bite in cherokee has been inconsistent this winter, especially the shallow to medium depth smallmouth that I normally target with crankbaits, swimbaits, etc. It has been a mild winter though which im sure has played a role in everything but I can also say that we have caught some bigger smallmouth than what we normally see this winter.

You just found your new favorite lake, what kind of sonar setup are you using up front? Keep up the good video's.
@RyanEppsFishing

I will be back to norris for sure. I was running a humminbird helix 7 up front in this video but since then I have swapped it out for a humminbird helix 9 just to give me a slightly bigger screen for vertical fishing

Good info brother! Now let me pose a question: when you go to a "new" lake...how in the world do you know where to start lookin to find them brownies??
@RyanEppsFishing
@RyanEppsFishing 4 года назад
I meant to set this video up where i did some map study and showed you guys that but I eneded up getn too busy that week but im gona try to do a video on that. Anyway, when I go to a new lake regardless of whether im lookin for smallmouth or largemouth I generally pick an area that has the most major creek arms near it then im lookin for areas within that section with the most channel bends and offshore structure options and finally I graph for bait to give me a depth range and start there.
@timevans6815
@timevans6815 4 года назад
I heard there was a dt6 demon/ red craw bite starting down there so much for that.
@RyanEppsFishing
@RyanEppsFishing 4 года назад
I throw a crankbait all winter but if you notice how calm the water was in the video, I dont prefer those conditions for cranking. If it was overcast and that wind was to pick up then for me that crankbait bite excels on those wind blown banks, regardless of what lake im on.
