North America's Wild Horses 

I see the documentary is creating a lot of comments and debate. That is good, debate always is. Within this debate there is some criticism of the BLM, even very severe criticism. It should be taken into account that this documentary was made in the early 2000's. It correctly depicts the work that was going on at and with the BLM at that time. I can vouch for that. The BLM may have changed as an organization and the way it operates since then. I hear talk/mention of a much less animal-friendly approach. I am not contesting that, as I have no knowledge of the BLM today (I live in Europe). There is every reason to be critical and skeptic, if that is the case. That being said, I ask (demand) that people keep the tone decent in this thread/forum. Insults, f...words etc. and undocumented wild accusations will be removed by me personally.

Nothing more magnificent as a horse running free.

To my knowledge, this is one of the very few horse related films that speaks for the horse. This is what every new horse person should be required to view.

I live on 120 acres of fenced property in NE Venture County between Simi Valley and San Fernando Valley. A dozen horses get to go where they want all day and a few are Mustangs from Nevada. They usually stay close to the corrals and hay though, and return every night to the corrals. This area has been used for Hollywood westerns for 100 years, having been used by most, if not all, western serial tv shows like the Lone Ranger and so many others. There were dozens of movie ranches within a 10 mile radius.

Those Mustangs are so beautiful. I love them.

Thank you so very much for this video. I have owned a few horses in my lifetime, Purely for pleasure riding and riding in parades. There was a group of us who all lived in the city and we started a riding club. We boarded our horses in Saxonsburg, pa. The owner of the stables was a great person to have as a friend as was his son Ben. I have always had a great love for horses and still do. This was one of the greatest times in my life. I have not had the pleasure of owning my own horse for some years but I still ride. Not to bad for an 80 yr. Old Black guy. To all of you folks who watched this video, if you have never experienced being involved with horses in anyway,try learning to ride to start. Genuinely was so happy to see the Horse Program for the inmates, that's a really wonderful thing that's happening - for the successes at least. It was really good to see those people with hope when their lives weren't what they'd possibly had wanted before (maybe they had their ideal life, I dunno) but some just seemed so happy with the horses :)

This is a true story and will prove that I was there. 1988-1989 between Tonapa and Christle Springs off the beaten path about 50-60 miles in a big valley I saw a white stallion with about 90-120 all dark brown and some black mares and it was truly a beautiful sight. I always was able to whistle and using my voice at the same time could sound just like a horse. When I called out to this group that was running from me and my truck the white responded with a magnificent fury. His herd kept running up the side between the mountain and a huge single rock formation and he came running up and down the gullies till he got within eyesight of me and I am glad he stopped to look me over. He was about 150 yards and I did not whistle at him again. He reared up and trotted back to his mares with his head and tail arched cause I was not a threat. Until he saw me he thought I was a challenge. Anyone in the history of big heards at that time knows of the white stallion I speak of. There was not an unhealthy animal that I could see and a spectacle of a lifetime was caught on my camera. I also hold some drilling records that have not been beaten in North America.

These horses, wild horses, are so different looking to me then domesticated horses. Even more majestic and a perfect example of pure freedom.

It's so lovely to see horses helping these people and people helping the horses. Horses change lives.

That one inmate that braided the grey roans forelock. You can tell these guys really care about earning the horses trust and respect. Amazing for these horses but mostly for these inmates. I'm incredibly impressed and grateful that these beautiful, majestic animals are being TRAINED NOT BROKE by an amazing program. I'd love to adopt one.

Nothing more beautiful than a wild horse

This is an amazing documentary which should be played at every school. It's so soul soothing to see how these unique animals are treated, respected, honoured and given the care and the chance to help rehabilitation for so many!!! Just perfect combination. I'd love to know more about the wild horse program and wish serves as an example for many prisoner systems around the world. Horses are powerful healears and able to transform lives of human beings in ways beyond our limited comprehension capacity. 👏👌🙌🙏💖

I know this was 20 years ago, and I understand the logistics, but I worry about separating family bands in these giant roundups. As well as the general stress these animals are undergoing.

What a wonderful video. We here in UK don't have the wide open spaces that you guys enjoy. I live in the countryside (Guildford , Surrey) and I've only known the horses of some ex-girlfriends. That horse-whisperer fella was cool. There was one horse, by the name of Harley, who stood at 18 hands and was the most gentle boy. Harley used to rest his chin on my hand as I stood inside the bottom of the stable door. I stroked his withers and the look in his eye was both calm and friendly. Those Wranglers are good guys. Beautiful animals.

Mustangs are some of the most amazing horses ever, my sister got her first mustang back in 2017 and we have just loved them ever since. I have 2 mustangs of my own, the trust between my gelding and I is unbelievable. He's just so trusting and kind, he's only two so he wasn't in the wild for long. Then my yearling from Antelope valley just acts like any regular domestic horse, she was most likely gathered as a foal with her mum. There's so many nice mustangs, it's hard to find one that you wouldn't bring home. They're all so correct and beautiful. The real key with training them is to give them time, if you push them too much they can either get aggressive (scared or not.) or hurt themselves trying to jump a fence etc.

Back in my younger years I used to live in Big Piney Wyoming with my grandfather. We had 2 paved roads, one going North/South ( North to Jackson Hole and South to Rock Springs) and one heading out towards the mountains to the west, my Grandfather and I would " ride out to the end of the pavement in his car and we could watch the wild horses be themselves, beautiful creatures in stunningly beautiful country. I miss those days. How bout we let THE PEOPLE of the states vote on where they end up after round up and not some thieving political hack! Novel thought. Thanks for the video.

So beautiful and uplifting to watch. Horses belong free to run wild-not to capture and sell at auctions. They are our American heritage! Certainly not to sell as meat to be consumed!

Over here is southern California we have them by our river , they hide out way in the desert and only come at night to drink from the river it breaks my heart how scared they are of us , they come in a huge huge group along with bulls and cows and mules but lately they are getting farther away . I admire them so much sometimes if you are super quiet they will come and drink next to you and it's amazing to see all them and the baby's

Good film ~ thank you Jan. Horses are my soul. I used to be a "horse tamer/wrangler" , started colts and worked with horses of all ages for 30+ years, not counting all the riding & stable work I did as a kid. My approach and philosophy is very much the same as Steve Mantle's etc. So glad he talked about how EGO has no place with horses, in the beginning and throughout their life with us.

This film brought back memories. I grew up riding Saddlebreds, then Hunter/Jumpers, Western Reining and finally Dressage. I've owned and ridden many different breeds of horses and ponies. Then my oldest daughter bought a Mexican Mustang for her husband because her Thoroughbred was too hot for hubby to ride. His name was Rafael, but we soon started calling him St. Raffie. He was so wise and brave and steady. You had to work slow and carefully with him on the ground at first until he was sure about you, but he was solid safe around traffic, bulls, playgrounds with screaming little kids. He did everything, even jumping! He was wonderful; good bone, great feet. Raffie finally got too old in the tooth (worn down from previous life in sandy soil) and she couldn't keep weight on him. He let her know it was time for him to pass on. He is buried in a grassy field under his favorite tree but we will always remember our little blood bay saint. Mustangs are truly wonderful horses.

I recently created my own documentary of my long ride across Ireland on my own two horses. We knocked on strangers doors asking for a field for the night and a place to camp! I think that video is the best way to capture the good the bad and the ugly and without storytellers like you to share these with others then the world would be a much smaller place!

For the longest time I never knew or saw horses living in the wild. It's truly amazing to see them in their natural habitat running freely. I'm so used to them being domesticated animals solely used for humans. To see them like this...brings a smile to my face. X

A beautiful documentary showing an exceptional love and concern by the participants (from wranglers to prison inmates) for these magnificent creatures, the wild mustangs. I hope this caring spirit still exists--from capture to adoption.

So happy to see that horses are finally being recognized as having been from North America. They didn’t return only 500 years ago though. There are many artifacts found showing that our indigenous people had a relationship with horses long before the Spanish horses arrived.

Today, or this morning, it was my turn to watch your great presentation about wild horses. I hope the programs to manage the American Iconic Mustang are still working out, funded and successful. Some of the archaeological history of a horse, as it relates to Spain, was kind of odd for me, as I had learned the Asian horse breeds (Appaloosa (oldest) and Arabian) predated a Spanish horse breed. Nonetheless, it was good to see humans learning a better ecological approach system for the Mustang. Many thanks for all the work and the show.

“Today, mustangs are no longer threatened and there is great respect for these horses.” Yeah, then fast forward to 2018 when Wyoming approved the culling of tens of thousands in order to lease more land to cattle ranchers. Believe me, there is enough open BLM land for all of them. The killing of these horses and burros is completely unnecessary, irresponsible and cruel. Humans are literally killing the planet in every possible way.

In the 70s my husband worked for the Nevada Test Site,building a power-line,all areas were restricted,no cameras etc.He would tell me stories of the things he witnessed or saw while being there daily for 9 months.Seeing the Mustang on the mesa was one.
