You Are There! We've posted a couple of Kermie Cam videos with planes from the early days of flight, thought it would be nice to jump ahead in time and fly something from the WWII period. Step into the cockpit of a P-51C Mustang with me and go over the pre-flight check list. Get a first hand glimpse of what it is like to sit at the controls of this magnificent machine, and prepare to fly it. In parts one and two, you'll see my pre-flight preparation. Then in part three, we'll take to the skies. - Kermit Weeks (20120928)

Awesome machine and pilot with a lot of attention to details. Thank you Mr Weeks as closest most of us will ever get to riding in a WWII VINTAGE AIRCRAFT!! I wouldn't hesitate for a second if that Mustang had a backseat to fly with you ,that's the best compliment i can give you.

My old boss in the 1980s told me about his flying P51 Mustang's against Germany near the end of World War II. I told him it must have been great flying that powerful, terrific flying airplane. He replied by saying, "Having the Germans shooting at you takes the romance out of it".

I to grew up in the 70's went to many airshows asked the same thing of family who were fighter pilots they way I was told when you do something 1000's of times not really as fun as you first thought it would be. They had no interest in flying a P-51 again to them it was something they did and moved on with life in fact several never got into a pilots seat again after the war was over. They married had kids and went to work for 40 years retired and enjoy life sitting watching football.

Beautiful aircraft, my favorite WII fighter. Great pilot. I showed this to my 93 year old dad, he flew F6F Hellcat in the South Pacific off a carrier. He was excited to see this video and brought back a lot of memories. I wish I could find a video of this quality about the F6F. My dad has early Dementia but he was very clear thinking about this video. Many thanks to you for putting this together just sorry I have not found it until now. Bless you Kermit Weeks . I want to say, thank you, for posting this video. Its an absolute thrill to see this warbird in her glory. I had the honor and privelage of growing up in a small town in northern california with a small airport. Me being 14 years old and a aviation fanatic, I started hanging around this airport plane spotting. Now this was the mid 80's so things were much different around airports then now a days. I could easily walk on to the ramp, walk through the hanger areas, etc. I would walk around talking to pilots, looking a airplanes and becoming a part of the airport community. I had the honor of getting to know Jack Hovey, Russ Francis, and many other warbird owners and over time earning their trust, I would eventually wash and wax these warbirds for rides. I would never ask, but on some weekends Jack would roll out his gorgeous africa corp, red spinner painted P-51D with the back seat conversion and give me that look...and off we would go cow chasing as he called it...I called it white knuckled at 100 feet off the deck scaring the bajezuz out of cattle. Then on occasion Russ would take out his P-51D or his gorgeous steerman and we would go for a ride to napa airport or tahoe...here I was just some kid who got to go on some amazing flights with the most amazing pilots. This video really cheered me up. Ive been suffering with the effects of my deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and although my physical injuries have healed, the psychological injuries have not and I find it hard to leave the house at times. This video helped a lot and I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you! Signed: A proud Veteran.

In all my years going to watch airshows around the country. I never had the chance to actually sit in the cockpit and hear that Rolls Royce Merlin Engine purr like I did in this video. I always heard the P-51's engines in passing. The only thing I am missing now is the vibration of the raw power this engine makes as you are flying it. Those WW II boys were a special breed of men who had a chance to fly some the most powerful piston engine aircraft ever built by Americans. From the P-51, to the Corsair and the P-38. I'll say it again, those men were something special. While the aircraft of today rely on stealth, supersonic and advance avionics to rule the skies. There will always be a place in my heart for those skilled pilots who control powerful aircraft like these with nothing more than stick, rudder and throttle control. In other words, these pilots, (like you sir), do one thing well. They fly the aircraft. Thanks for this video. It is appreciated.

Grew up in Miami. Got my private pilots license in 1979 at Tamiami Airport. Weeks Aviation used to be based on that field. One day by chance taxied out in my C172 to 9R behind KW in his P-51. He did a 90 degree turn at the end of the taxiway to do his pre departure mag checks etc. I parked next to him to do my pre departure mag check. Highlight of my day, right? Keep in mind he was the current (or nearly so) US National Aerobatics champion. He then asked the tower to approve a “vertical 180 departure”. Tower OK’d it. I am now a retired airline pilot. To this day it was the most thrilling takeoff I have ever seen. He lifted the P-51 off the runway, sucked up the gear but stayed right on the deck picking up speed. Then pulled the plane straight up and over in a half loop until inverted, then descended down to about 100 feet and flew back down the runway (yes, upside down) and past me again waiting on the taxiway. Pushed the nose up (down?), half roll to right side up and climbed out towards the Everglades. I’ve never forgotten it.

God I love the sound of that engine. I visited Fantasy of Flight around 2005 when Mr. Weeks hosted our Annual Powered Paraglider Event. One of my favorite memories other than seeing all the vintage airplanes was while flying my PPG around the area during the day was the smell of the Orange Blossoms rising up during the heat of the day. My recently passed Father was a member of Navy Squadron VP-50, 'The Blue Dragons' and served in the Korean War with the PBM's and P5M's. We were lucky when the annual reunion was in Tucson and the Pima Air and Space Museum pulled the ladder up to the fully restores PBM Mariner and we got to do a walk thru. All the old guys were commenting on how small it seemed inside after all those years. Gee, I wish I had Mr. Weeks toy box. His Double, Triple and Quadruple check of preflight and inflight systems is to be admired.

Kermit, many thanks for taking this 89 year old for a flight in your P-51C. I've always loved these planes and was very young when the P40's came to New Zealand on their way to the Pacific war zone and can remember waiting for the plans to arrive at the Model shop after the war, so I could build and fly one. It was a treasured model and was powered by a Max 3.5cc homemix diesel fuel.and was a dream to fly. I never got to see inside one ,though I watched them take off and land at Whenuapai and Hobsonville Air bases near by. Again my thanks . Cheers. Harley Nathan.

I was lucky enough to see Mr. Weeks fly the D model a few years ago at Fantasy of Flight. What a beautiful machine. He took the time to talk to a crowd of about 50 of us about his future plans and current projects. I had a great day and got to talk to and hang out with a legend for a few minutes. My hat's off to you sir. From one Purdue drop out to another. Fair skies.

Great vids Kermit!! My partners uncle flew the P51 mustang in WW2. a few years ago he told me what a great aeroplane it was. He is 96 and has dementia now and doesn't speak. I am sure if I could get his son to bring up this video on the laptop in widescreen he would give some sort of reaction like he did when the son wore a spitfire t shirt a few months ago. He recognised the image and said "I used to fly those" and then went silent again. When he was in good health he told me the spit was great for what it could do but the mustang was something else, I seem to remember him saying the range was incredible, it could fly from England to Yugoslavia and back if need be. A different breed of men in those days. Respect

I really hope you try that with him.. hopefully with a set of fostex cans plugged in :) , the sounds as well as the sights would be very stimulating. The elderly with dementia can react very strongly to music from their era. I could imagine these videos would stir something in him deeply. You should try to video it if possible.

Went to High School with Kermit. Years latter I was south bound at the east end of the Tamiami Airport. A P-38 Lightning rose up in front of me and banked left. Moments latter a P-51 rose up, banked left in hot pursuit. Months latter I ran into Kermit. Reminded who I was and asked about the 2 planes. He said he was flying the P-38. I asked who was flying the Mustang and he replied “my wife”. I about fell down! Now years latter I have had the great pleasure of flying back seat in the Collings Foundation’s P-51 trainer. I was floored at how light the controls were and how quickly it responds to input. I only wish I could afford to do so again (and again!) Kermit, keep up the good work!

Wow, that is a busy aircraft! No copilot to help you with check list. I think that has more knobs and controls for flight than the fighters I worked on back in the 70’s! Thanks for the video, brilliant!

Hell its a rare scale model to.find it seems. Especially when like me you want to do.up this exact plane he is flying. And the only kits seem to be from back when the red tails movie was out. A time when i was away from scale model hobbying.

The P51 has always been one of my favorite aircraft. Was lucky enough to have a customer of mine who was one of the designers and test pilot of the original Mustang Mk I. I believe there are 3 P-51 few miles away from my home here in Ormond Beach. They are based at the Spruce Creek Fly-in.

Kermie, you are one of the luckiest, no doubt deserving guys i've seen, keep it flying, i am military, my dad was a 7th grade high school dropout to work on the farm, he taught me everything, including love of airplanes, he built one from scratch the FAA would'nt let him fly, using a lycoming 4 cylinder, his love was for the mustang, it sits in my mom's back yard in the middle of a residential area, no way to get to it, what a shame, anyways, thanks for the flight tutorial , it was a blast, dad would have loved it, i wanted to get him a flight with mustang ops in Florida, but he's gone, might have to do the flight myself and dedicate to dad, that would be cool, safe flights bud

Mr. Weeks, I want to thank you for the ride! It's not everyday that we get to see, from the pilot's seat, what it's like to fly a Mustang. That Merlin sure sounds good, but God, 46" of MP and 3,000 some RPM on take off. Blows this old GA pilot's mind. A Cessna 150 never had THOSE numbers. :p Thanks for that video.

My son (19) is at Luke working on F-35’s .. has had time on F-16’s & a whole day on a F-22 (fuels).. my 21 yr old daughter is trying to get into avionics or systems for F35’s, my youngest (18) wants to be a PJ.. goes to Meps in a week. Best part as an old 55ry old naval corpsman, and grandson to Msgt Leeroy Billings (Wikipedia) ? The kids are sending me up in a mustang for my birthday this Christmas 1/4 mi from my home in Chandler AZ, private field & owner. All 3 of them are probably more excited than I am. Me? I’m just proud of them. I’m going to watch this 10x in the next few weeks. Appreciated.
