For someone that is from the South I can only say that Patrick Swayze was very accurate by explaining the way we raise our children. Whenever we travel to the North my kids will stick out like a sore thumb. They would never call a man or woman by their first names. It’s always ma’am and sir. My 7 year old boy opens the door for his 17 year old sister and would never question that. No, we are not saying that women are incapable or need help. It’s just our way of that extra respect and care we show for them.
Right, because this is still the nineteenth century. 😒 It sounds like you believe all Northerners are rude, when they really just want to get to the point. I’ve lived in both regions.
Exactly! Born and raised in Texas, my mom taught my brother and I to always call an adult; Mr., Mrs. or Miss/Ms. Unless they give us permission to call them by their first name or if they are a priest, so it would be Father Matt. Most of the older men still hold doors open for women and let them walk in first, and we still stand whenever an elderly person walks into the room and offer our seat so they can sit down.
Funnily enough, I'm a Northern girl who spent part of my life in China, and when I moved back to the Northeast it seemed like most people here knew close to nothing about the American South. I can't really tell where I picked up the habit of calling people "sir" and "ma'am", but yes, it does seem to stick out weirdly up here. Thanks for sharing this information!
I cannot believe there was not a 25th Anniversary of this glorious film. It is a feast for the eyes, ears, heart and mind. I used it to teach my students. And they fell in love with history because of it. Thank you Patrick for standing up for values and honor. Why am I not shocked that Hollywood would see that as a liability.Good grief!🤦♀️
I absolutely love this mini-series. I was 12 when this came out. I remember my mom letting me stay up the one night of the week when this came on. I really feel this show didn't get enough credit for all the actors. Patrick Swayze did a absolutely wonderful job in this. So did James Read. I have all the books, mini-series set and I love the music in this. The costumes, sites, EVERYTHING IS SO wonderful. And it had some great acting in it. This will always be one of my all-time favorite shows. RIP all the actors who played in this that all gone. I will never forget this show.
This series was so well done, it shows perfectly how we got to the point of civil war, two different regions with different cultures and values, and they never really went away. I was 13 when this first aired and I stayed up to watch this as well, well worth it.
This was not only one of the best mini series, but also a one of a kind cast. I wacht it whenever re-runs are on and I always fall back in love with the story, the friendship between Orry & George. That's the core of the whole thing, if you ask me. And the soundtrack ... wow. I can't stop listening to that masterpiece.
I remember watching this show with my mom. I can tell you I learned more about slavery and the civil war from this series then I did from school. This show transports you to this time period and helps you to understand the raw emotion behind the history. Now I am watching this with my own kids.
spot on! I was in my teens when I first saw it, and I, too, learned so much about the Civil War through this and reading Jakes' books after watching the mini-series. It was definitely education for me. And I didn't care for school when I was in high school, but Jakes drew me in with this trilogy (although I don't care for Book III. Book II is my favorite one but love I too).
It did a great job of explaining how there were extremists on both sides that tore our country apart and it's still relevant, we are still not totally united as a Nation, now it's about Democrats and Republicans.
This TV mini series never got the recognition it deserved. I remember watching Part 1 and Part 2 on TV back in the mid 80's. Between the actors, (both the characters and the movie stars) the music, the scenes, (including all the battle scenes) the costumes, it was just incredible! And having the privilege of going to Charleston and visiting, seeing where this was shot, walking in history, it is something I will not forget And the music by Bill Conti, outstanding. This by far was Patrick Swayze's finest work. I applaud all the actors who starred in this. And 35 years later, still watching it, well it's seems like it was just yesterday.
I remember another TV (mini)series from the 1980s about the civil war: The Blue and the Gray. I had to look it up and was surprised how short that series was. Original release dates were just three days in November 1982. North and South aired (with long breaks in between) from 1985 to 1994.
feel the same. Also, it was the best acting job for Kirstie Alley. She was amazing in that movie. It had a lot of meat to the role, and she played it magnificently.
I play this movie every year in my classroom to help my students understand more of the emotions and realities of the Civil War. Within the first half of the the first episode, they are hooked! They start cheering for their favorite characters. More importantly, they understand more of the issues in the US during this time.
Hey Hillc2, I'm a teacher too and I always thought I'm the only teacher to have used North and South in the classroom. ( I did cut out inappropriate scenes.)But every year, my students declared my class was their favorite.
To me, this was one or if not, the best serie i've ever seen and not to talk about the greatest cast ever . And that theme music still get to me till this day, just amazing.
Never has a production, a group of actors, the people that they played, and a script, so moved and touched my life. The music the writing the people the subject the way it was executed. Thank you
When I saw Patrick Swayze perform in N&S, I knew he would become a legend. I was blown away by his work. Still one of my favorite films, and I am a Civil War buff.
At about 14 I use to watch this in the late 80ties. It made a huge impact on me. I live in Denmark and it was big here too. Strangely enough, 5-6 years later I was a professional soldier myself in a war. I remember coming home and found my sweetheart with another man. I started drinking. Had big problems in the years after. A lot of hate and aggression. I watched it again 10 years later and found it totally different. As a big kid, it was exciting. As an adult it became emotional..
I have the trilogy on DVD and when this came out when I was 16, my breath was taken away and I couldn’t wait to spend the money to buy it all for myself. I know these movies by heart. I fell for Patrick for the first time when this came out on tv. Such a beautiful story with beautiful characters and actors
Hec man almost 4 decades later........ still watching it on RU-vid, and still outstanding. A brilliant miniseries that was so underrated. What a cast too, so many big names in it. It was also my first introduction to Patrick Swayze, who I felt in my bones was going to be a big star after watching this unknown at the time. One of the best film adaptations I have ever seen based on the books, by John Jakes. The American Civil War as tragic as it was, was also one of the most fascinating periods in history to me , and it remains an emotional topic.
Oh my sweet baby Jesus....Patrick Swayze explaining why he calls everyone sir and how it’s part of his southern manners and his upbringing and holding a door for a lady and pulling out chairs. Dear Lord above we sooo need more men like him on this earth. *swoon*
i still find it beautiful that the series sparked two marriages that last to this day: James Read and Wendy Killbourne and Jonathan Frakes and Genie Francis.
Recently started rewatching this.It is such an amazing tale of friendship.I loved all the characters. I loved Orrie Maine and I loved Patrick Swayze... He is so missed 😭...gone too soon.
Most women fell for Patrick during Dirty Dancing, but I fell fr him during this mini series. I remember thinking, this handsome and talented guy is going to go far.
Me too. I was young, but I thought to myself: This is the kind of man I want to marry. Strong but gentle, tough but caring. I haven't found anyone yet that matched up to my dream. Patrick set the bar really high.
@@HelenaRG71 For me it was George too =) I remember I was so dissapointed he got married first * lool *. Fun fact: The actor James Read playing George is actually married irl to the woman who played his wife Constance.
Same. I was young when the series aired, like only 10 years old but I remember seeing Patrick for the first time as Orry Main and just falling for him. From then on if he was in it, I watched it.
Too true - she was a perfect fit for the role. When her character Madeline was being beaten by the reprehensible thug Justin LaMotte, I nearly damaged our TV, trying to defend her.
I loved Patrick Swayze in this series. He was so good. It's no wonder he thought Dirty Dancing was so cheesy and wouldn't do very well, because he compared it to North and South. In comparison, he was right.
Yeah whenever I say I really enjoy Patrick Swayze people laugh because of Dirty dancing, but in both North and South and Red Dawn he is in amazing actor.
For me this is the best mini series ever made..It is so good and i still love it so much except book 3. That should've never been made. But for me this is Patricks best work...I mean sure i love Dirty dancing and Ghost etc but for me this was it. I think i've watched North and South so many times now and it never gets old. It is interesting now to watch it because i feel like the whole world is divided right now..Just hope no war comes from it.
patrick Swayze was so good in this miniseries.......He was a great actor.....i love north&south my favorite miniseries........I loved george &orry as best friends........rip patrick swayze...........
I bought all the series of North and South. I love the series and Patrick swayzee is a superb actor and such a gentleman. I miss him he's gone too soon.
Patrick is STILL sorely missed to this day! I admired him and James Read in North & South which could never compare to Dirty Dancing, which was a disappointment to me! RIP Patrick.
Thanks for the TV series of North and South I love it and now I have the DVD of it thanks Patrick swayze and James read for making it and the cast too Miss Margie Sanchez Patrick swayze he was just fabulous in the role he is gone too soon he will always be the perfect southern gentleman,¡
Am Texan, can confirm you say “sir” and “ma’am” and all the rest. In the south. It’s common courtesy to hold the door open for people, give people directions if they need them, let the other car go first if you both arrive at the intersection at the same time, that kinda thing.
Texan too. Can you believe “y’all” isn’t a word used everywhere??? Lol... blows my mind. But yes, sir & ma’am are ALWAYS used, just like deferring to elders!? Duh.
This is one of my absolute FAVORITE Television Series! I've watched every episode multiple times and will continue to do so years from now when this young man has replaced with an old one.
A true genuine human being , who despite his fame kept his feet on the ground! An amazing, gentleman, a caring human being, such a loss to the human race! May he rest in peace! Only the best go first!
I'm a big movie buff and I honestly have to say this mini series is in my top five movies I have ever seen that I loved and still do. I bought the DVD and have watched it many times. First time I had heard of and watched Patrick Swayze act. He is full of charisma, full of passion and emotion, and he pours his heart into not only this movie, but in every part he plays in all the films he's been in. If you haven't seen North & South, you should buy the DVD & watch. Like me, I'm sure you would watch it more than once. The world lost a very special man when Patrick left this earth way too soon. I think of all the wonderful movies we could have had if he hadn't been taken from us so young. Rest in Peace Patrick, you will never be forgotten ❤❤❤
I remember watching the mini-series with my neighbor when I was a kid. I would run next door and she would have dessert ready for us. Either hot apple pie with ice cream, cookies and ice cream floats. We both loved this min-series. I have the theme song on my phone and at first the VHS tapes and now the DVD's . I hadn't read the books, but in my 20's I found myself in a bookstore. Bought all 3 books and devoured them. Still have them too. :) The cast was incredible. The story keep me spellbound and still does.
If you go o Boone Hall in South Carolina, take a tour of the house, and yall see original pictures taken between filming takes with Patrick Swayze in full costume. It was very emotional for me.
This was such a good mini-series. Great adaptation of a great story with great casting and acting and a musical score that makes you look around for your damn horse so you can leap astride it and charge into battle.
I live in south east Louisiana not far from the area where some of the scenes were filmed and I can tell you I think of this movie and the stars that made it possible every time I visit. I just love it, a part of me will always be there in the south with the history and southern mansions that line the Mississippi River (I work at one of them). Can't get enough of this movie.....
I really enjoyed the first two books of the series. Phenomenal and just a wonderful mini series, rich tapestry and excellent characters. I'm blown away by the scale and really superb storytelling!
This was my first series I love to watch. Remember I was grade 4 :))) but still told my friends about american history. Lovely story. We miss and love you Patrick
I found series on yt and watching again, I watched on TV when I was just 10 years old and still remember it, it's just so nice feeling to see it again, the best series ever
I was 10 when the first series came out too. Watched every minute of it, and couldn't wait for series 2 the next year. Bought the DVD set when it came out, and rewatch every year or so. The opening music is nostalgic for me.
Somehow when I was 11 I got sucked into watching Book 1 in the 80's on TV. By the time it ended I remember waiting for Book 2 and it seemed like it took a yr. This series just reminds me of being a kid and watching it with my dad, the history buff that he was and as am I at 48.
My absolute favorite TV series EVER ❤️ First saw in on Egyptian TV back in the late 80s . Now , almost 40 years later still love every single second of it ❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 RIP Patrick Swayze ❤️
One amazing fact is that Patrick Swazye did 2 lead roles in 1985 that were very diverse - not just North & South but also a true cult classic movie "Red Dawn", where he plays the older wiser brother saving his family, friends & town from a Communist invasion force. Any Swazye fan will appreciate it !
Remember being allowed to stay up and watch this as a 10 year old. TV shows in the 1980's pulled out all the stops, big budgets, big stars. Unfortunately, the 3rd series with a much lower budget and trying to introduce new characters previously never mentioned tarnished the legacy.
Same. I was 10 and was allowed to watch this. I didn't like series 3 either. Orry killed immediately, Bent returning from a barn that caught on fire, and exploded. Constance getting killed, and George hooking up with Madelyn right after. All really bothered me. Plus Charles being played by a different actor, and the quality made it nearly unwatchable for me.
My all-time favorite mini-series. One of the best historical "movies" I've ever seen, and I read North & South trilogy after I saw the mini-series. Loved it, and I read Jakes' Kent Family Chronicles 8-book series as well. Amazing author! You read his work and feel like you're living in the era he's putting forth. Love it!
Let's hope that BLM and Wokism don't destroy the legacy of this masterpiece. In 2022 it's all about trying to erase the past so they can rewrite and dictate the future. So many people need to realise nothing is as simple as black and white or north or south.. people are complex beings and the civil war was a complex issue.
I was too young to appreciate this in fact I was just a baby when this series first aired on television originally but I remember as I became an older kid it replayed on television and I remember watching it with my mom night after night and I just fell in love with it and to this day at 38 years old it's still one of my favorite movies book 1 and 2. And I have always been curious to actually study at school history the part evolving the Civil War because of this series and I have read one of the three books
This came out when I was a little kid. This was a good mini series. I saw some of it for the 1st time when I was in high school. I enjoyed what I saw that 10 yrs later I saw the whole series on DVD I had to get it. I will admit I fell for 2 of the women. Major crushes.
Laural Megan true. I remember watching this so much. I'm a southern man. Yet I so remember watching this with my dad. Here on March 20th will be 10 years.
I did not realize until recently the actor connections between this miniseries and Star Trek. Kirstie Alley (Saavik) from Star Trek II, Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) from Star Trek The Next Generation, John Anderson (Kevin Uxbridge) from Star Trek The Next Generation, Anthony Zerbe (Admiral Matthew Doughetry) from Star Trek: Insurrection and Jean Simmons (Rear Admiral Norah Satie) from Star Trek The Next Generation.
I loved that series!! My favorite version is with Patrick Swayze. The other ones aren't as exciting, I think. Patric talks about eye candy? He is/was for sure!! The gorgeous people are just that.
Writing , scripting , producing , music. , Unbelivable from A to z ...but patrick swayze is in equal , n of course james read they both exaamplify how friendship n honor have to be ..I got tears that scene when Ori. Mortgage the farm and travell alone with money despite danger n rising anger in both sides n risk his life just to ensure the rights of his partner n to see him for last time as he thought they would never met again.,,,,.RIP patrick .Syz. N my greetings from Egypt
This was very great documentation of the series! I love the whole series NORTH & SOUTH, especially the first 2. I just personally didn't like the 3rd over as much as I did the first two, because Orry had to get killed in the begging of North & South: Heaven & Hell. But overall, I loved the whole series! Magnificent job for bringing history to life through a story!
I've been to Boone Hall, sometime in 1988.....Of course we went to it after seeing North and South...The trees are amazing....Of course that wasn't the original plantation house, as it burned down in real life and wasn't made of brick....I think it was rebuilt in the 1900's......Also got to see George's house, which was also in Charleston...As I recall, Boone Hall's interior isn't very big, so they used other homes for the interior shots..
I love it because it was a very nuanced picture of the North & South, how it was really a Brothers' War and the inflamed passions on both sides via Virgilia and Ashton. I can't say enough good about this series (Books 1 and 2 ofc)
I was a Reenactor back then and my girlfriend was so enamored by southern chivalry , she thought she was in a fairytale watching this series . But the fairytale ended at the 125th Gettysburg reenactment when I came home to find her with the Captain of her high school football team.
it is so sad that today it is not possible anmore to make such good series, programs etc....... the story, the writer, the super actors, the music etc etc etc........todays program is ......s...said in one short word.....back then there was a great theme, and everything around it, also the old westerns etc......today the programm makers have no ideas, sets, actors anymore....fast computer-creations, and movies without any sence .......
Loved the first two books but felt book three was a mess and ruined a lot of stuff from the previous book. Loved the mini series book I&II. It was spectacular, the actor's were fantastic, the sets, costumes, score just mesmerising. I learned a lot from the books and mini series. It helped begin my love for history. I just like to pretend book III never existed.
One of the best mini series I have ever seen. Talented acting. Interesting story based on facts. The last section based on reconstruction was very disappointing on every level to me.
Wow after watching this wonderful series from start to end, it really hit home what these brave men and women went through. We should never there scarfices.
