Saw you park in that bush to charge. Thought to myself: he's going to get bird poo on his bike, wanna bet? And now I get to leave this smug comment here. Even in rain, wind, overcast skies and waaaay off the beaten tourist tracks, NZ has got nothing but stunning landscapes on offer. Thanks for sharing them with a Belgian guy going through a very, very rainy springtime this year.

Thanks man! Hawaii was hard to leave. That place is amazing. But alas, I had video to edit lol. Yeah how cool would it be to only charge for free on a trip, as a challenge? It's definitely possible if you're not in a rush!

First of all...3rd electric motorbike to be up there (1 & 2 were mine) lol. Secondly, that's my old home area at Ahipara/Herekino/Pawarenga and that marae on the hill out towards your very wrong turn is Mōrehu...I will give you 1st electric motorbike out to Pawarenga hahahahahaha!!!

Just travelled nzlnd for a month ... and now have even more respect for e travelers overthere ..there is really nobody riding or driving electric .. hardly any sola or wind .. maybe because of hydro power ... but i loved the trails and wild country !!! Greetings and respect to you !!!!

Whoa nice! You must have been on the South Island. I have to admit, that's the cooler island of the two, but harder to get around via EV, especially the West Coast. On the North Island Teslas and wind turbines are everywhere. It ain't easy though. You got that right!

Whenever people complain about EV chargers I ask when the last time they went to an unmanned petrol station with less than 4 pumps was. I went around Scotland's NC500 in '21 on a gas bike and stopped at two unmanned single-pump stations ... one of which was broken. It's not the units themselves, it's the install and forget attitude of the networks.

Great point! After 7 years of riding electric motorcycles, I hate feeling like I'm still an early adopter, but I guess that's what's going on here.

@@NewZeroland The infrastructure really is kinda killing it, especially with the explosion in adoption (at least for cars) here in Europe. A friend of mine swore off using his Polestar for long trips after taking his first one and being stuck waiting ages at a charger and I have to admit, when you said your bike charges too fast to get food I had a chuckle because I want mine to charge faster so I can go stop somewhere less desolate and unloved than your average charger location.

@@Brimstonewolf Oh yeah, give us a full charge in 10 minutes and all these problems would be sorted. Vehicles would be in and out in no time. Less waiting, more driving! I feel for the Polestar guy. They're great cars, but they aren't Teslas. Without the supercharger stations, we all struggle.

On my trip to the cape light house we came back along 90 mile beach as it’s classed as a highway, I recall a lot of the “unsealed “ roads were in the north island. The corrugated roads were dreadful and I was in a coach.

@@NewZeroland just do a little research as there’s an ideal place to drive/ride, which is from my memory roughly where the high tide line is, as this is the most compacted sand and firm. I was in a big coach so definitely firm enough, I recall the driver had to gun it off the beach as got quite loose getting off the beach by the exit.

gravel is ok if its not too deep and youre expecting it -- when you dont its a pita that happened at 90 mile beach for me (44km really lol) rental scooter not allowed)

Wait, why do they call it "90 Mile beach" when NZ uses Kilometers? Heck, "90km beach" would probably be more accurate. The detour you too had a silver lining at least... well, it'd be better if you were riding bikes more suited to the gravel roads, but hey maybe one day head back there with an off road bike! and it certainly made you appreciate the paved roads more I'm sure. Oddly enough I will never say no to bronze colored wheels. It's like gold, but less "over the top." Jen's Rain gear and all the sights reminds me I need to finish playing Death Stranding which was the game I made a comparison to the during the last big road trip!

Right?? It's basically 90km. Maybe a mixup in translation when it was named, because NZ used to use miles? Definitely wanna go back on a different bike. That whole area needs weeks to explore. I still need to play Death Stranding! I looked really chill and moody.

Great video Sam. And I got a geography lesson while I was watching. Yep, the scenery up north is spectacular. I've been right up the top to Cape Reinga but never down the way you and Jen went. Certainly haven't seen Tane Mahuta. I was a tad jealous. Charging infrastructure there like here in the UK is somewhat lacking. Hawaii, lucky you. I went there years ago and enjoyed it. Thanks again, Gary! I had no idea what was up there, so it was all new and exciting. There's just too much to see. Most people come to NZ for 2 weeks, tops, and that isn't even enough to see ONE island! Hopefully the charging infrastructure improves soon so we can get back out and explore more.

Super cool episode. This just cements the argument that the infrastructure needs to be improved. It also brings up that what there is needs desperately to be maintained in a timely fashion. Beautiful trip though. And your suffering always seems to end up with you having a positive attitude in the end. Thanks for being that ray of sunshine that peeks out between the storm clouds.

Aw thanks bro! That means a lot :D I wasn't sure if I was being too harsh on the current state of EVs, like if I'm moving the goal post.. but the goal is to be as fast and convenient as filling up a tank of gas, so I'll keep commenting on this problem until we get there haha.

@@NewZeroland nope. Not too harsh. Very reasonably annoyed. The remote locations are even more important to be frequently serviced and repaired. In a city center where you have a choice of 20 chargers it’s acceptable to be lax on charger maintenance. But not at a last chance charging station.

You now have a small idea why so many riders ride Adventure Bikes, to find the most scenic roads and explore. But for road bikes, electric may be the way to go in a few more years, nice trip! I would really like to try one (Energica).

DC charging is too fast for you? Just find a public AC charging station...on most EVs you even can set the charge rate to your liking. But I agree: For me about 30-40mins is a perfect charge period from 20-80%.... anything faster is a pain unless it would be like 5mins.

Yeah, that's the time frame exactly. The 15-25 min stops are so annoying because all you can do is wait at the bike. The 5-10 min stops will be a game changer.
