North Korea's Dangerous Border: Alone To The DMZ - South and North Korea border tour
I am in Seoul, South Korea and I would like to visit the nearby border between South and North Korea. You can join tourist tours that start in Seoul and go to the border. But, I am not a big fan of such tourist tours. They put you in a bus in Seoul, drive you to the border, and you return to Seoul in the evening. I rather go on a border adventure and also stay in a hotel close to the North Korea border. So, join me on this trip to the DMZ, the demilitarized zone that separates South Korea and North Korea. Let's find out what's it like to visit the DMZ and the border between these two countries.

Ken, I remember the fall of the Berlin Wall very well. At that time, I was fifteen, and I felt like I was witnessing history being made. Today, it might seem difficult for Korea to reunite, but I hope that bad things will never happen and that the lives of Korean people will be calm and peaceful all the time. I crossed Checkpoint Charlie when the Wall was up in Germany. I spent a day in East Berlin, and it was quite a different experience than West Berlin. At the time, the Wall from the East Berlin side was very chilling, but the view from the West had a lot of graffiti. Tourists were able to see over the Wall from the western side, but nobody went near it from East Berlin. In certain locations along the western side, there were viewing platforms, often referred to as "observation platforms" or "lookout towers," where people could go up to get a better view over the Wall into East Berlin. These platforms were installed by West Berlin authorities and became popular spots for both locals and tourists to see what lay beyond the barrier. From these platforms, people could see the so-called "death strip" - the space between the inner and outer walls that was heavily fortified and monitored by East German guards - and parts of East Berlin. It was a chilling experience to be sure.

As an American it was so sad visiting Berlin and still being able to see not just the walls but the difference in architecture. We have friends and family in western Germany but have been in Berlin a few times. First time we stayed at an Airbnb southeast of the Brandenburg Gate in an original east Berlin apartment building. It was so surreal staying there.

I went to DMZ earlier this year, the theme park at the bus stop was for visiting S Koreans who goes there to pray. the younger generations will follow their parents or grandparents, and since they may not be aware of the Korean war, they will play at the theme park

The Berlin Wall was very forbidding. I went through it twice on school trips. Crossing the boarder from West into East Germany was very frightening. The border was covered in arc lights and soldiers came onto the train with dogs snarling and barking. Probably the scariest thing was using the toilet at checkpoint Charlie on the US side. The lights were out and we had to keep the door slightly open to see. It's the only time I've been to the toilet with a gun pointing at me!!! East Berlin was like a different world. People qued to buy toilet rolls and sausages - that was all there was to buy. The old tram tracks went along the ground and came to a halt at wall. Buildings were still undergoing repairs from the war there too. It was like travelling back in time...... unforgettable experiences.

I'm from Switzerland and remember the fall of the Berlin wall. My school's history teacher traveled there and brought back a piece of the wall to show us. It had graffiti on it. :)

There is an elevator at the subway station, so travelers with large bags can take it. If you find the location of the elevators before getting on the subway, they are located above and underground. You just can't use them because you don't know.

There is also a wall in the Korean Peninsula dividing the two Koreas. But unlike any other walls, this wall doesn’t deteriorate over time, but strengthens instead. And it’s already been more than 70 years, and the wall has become way too high to surmount and way too hard to break. We call it “the Wall of Reality”.

You kept saying when you look over to the North Korea side, you are just looking at someone's houses. If you have done enough homework, you'd know that there's no home or family near the border. Like you said, even back in the time there was East and West Germany, people from the East had been trying to go over to the West side. North Korea is the same situation even today. People need special permission, even special social status, someone who showed strong allegiance to the government and to the party can even go to the border area. So you don't have to feel bad when you look at someone's houses. There is no residential area near the border. There are, however, a lot of fake houses just to make the North Korea look good. These houses may or may not have rooms. They could be just some building with windows, like the props at movie studio.

The begginning of the video reminds me of trying to find my way around the Tokyo station towards the beginning of Persona 5. I was thinking how awful it would be to try do that in real life. Hi, wir waren letztes Jahr in Korea und haben auch eine der Tagestouren von Seoul aus gemacht (wollten eig zur JSA, ging aber nicht wegen dem Soldat, der paar Wochen vorher rübergerannt ist :/ ), war zwar ganz nett gemacht, aber ziemlich strikt im Zeitplan und waren bissl enttäuscht. Deswegen haben wir später auf unserer Korea Reise die DMZ nochmal besucht und zwar in Gangwon an der Ostküste. Da kann man eben selber mit dem Auto reinfahren zum Goseong Unification Observatory und die Experience war besser und auch individueller (plus wir hatten bessere Sicht an dem Tag). Kann ich nur empfehlen, aber macht braucht halt ein Auto.

Hi ken, The reason why the motel that you slept was in that mood, is that all south korean men has to go to the military, about the age of 20-22 period for nearly 1.5 years. So, due to this young age, mens, which has GF behind, has to go to the military during engaging. So, lots of GF spend their time with her BF during the BF's vacation. But by the short days of vacation, they often use motel near the military bases, before BF going back. No illegal thing might happend in your motel, just young couple's date. So, there was also PC in the room, which PC game is very common in Korea by men.

about wanting for the 2 koreans to get together i have heard when i lived there many i talked to said no because they did not want to have to take care of them and to south koreans the north are different and don't want to give them jobs. i lived there for 9 years. I am from the U.S.A

The best tour is of peace village Panmunjom with the blue UN huts literally on the border line but I believe it's been stopped since an American soldier used a tour to hop over the border 😮 I did this tour in 2010 very thought provoking you even have to sign a disclaimer saying it's at your own risk!

im an american but i have german friends and their dad escaped east berlin in 1969 with some of his friends.they came to usa to live. i remember watching that dumb wall come down with my german friends.they were all crying and these are some tough guys. he went back to germany to reunite with his family but most had died.

That is actually not the end of the world. lol. Once I went to another state in my country while traveling for a college conference and I also booked for a week that kind of hotel. I didn't even know about it, just got to know when I was there, and some nights I could even hear people from the other room doing their business lol.

11:30 우리나라에는 러브호텔이라는 개념이 따로 없고, 그냥 규모가 크면 호텔, 규모가 작으면 모텔이라고 보면 됩니다. 저기는 이름만 호텔이지 사실은 모텔임. 모텔은 주로 지방 출장 가서 묵을 곳이 필요한 사람이나 연인들이 2시간 대실해서 69 하려고 가는 곳임. 근데 우리나라는 모텔들도 매일 이불을 교체하는 식으로 깨끗하게 관리되기 때문에, 다른 나라의 저렴한 모텔들 처럼 위생을 의심할 필요는 없음. 괜히 저런 작은 방이 7만원이나 하는게 아님

Similar to Germany's case being divided by Soviet Union & USA after WW II, but siginificant different fact with Korea's case is that Korea was not responsible for WW II at all, even Korea was victim of Japanese colonization, while Germany was totally responsible for World War II and then punished & devided in East/West Germany. Instead of pity Korea, Japan should have been devided by North Japan & South Japan owing to their own war criminals & responsibility. And they should have their own civil war like Japanese War. In other words, can you imagin, devided East France & West France instead of East/West Germany? Such a stupid thing really happened in our world history. In fact, USA once made decision to make Japan remained as poor argricultural country forever after Japan's surrender. However, irionically Japan could be very rich country again in very short period of time thanks to Korean War in '1950. That time USA needed Japan as solid back-up for war recourses. Hense, many war criminal corporations like Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Toyota, Nissan could be recovered very shortly and could enjoy their fruitful business since Korean War. And many war criminals set free by USA during Korean War and now their sons & grand-sons are still major Japanese politicians. Unlike Germany, they (Japanese politicians) never admit what their fathers & grand-fathers did in the past. Even they pretend to be victims of atomic bombs only. Also, they do not want to teach correct history to Japanese students. You will be very surprised when you meet Japanese people because they do not have much idea about their modern history. Above was some of many reasons why Koreans hate Japan (no ordinary people, we hate most major Politicians whose father & grand-father was war criminals)

Many foreign tourists visit DMZ by a day tour bus, but you visited there by yourself wow... very interesting! Thank you for visiting my country Korea 🇰🇷

I did the tour group to DMZ starting from Honggik University, the only difference from your trip is that we had to share the bus with other foreigners and had a tour guide. We didn't need to pay for hotel in Geumchon, take the metro or pay for a taxi.

This does seem like a "what not to do" guide so far. Arrive in Korea with no hotel, cash, understanding of t-money cards or knowledge of the language. Speak on trains. Travel to the DMZ by the least efficient means possible, book a hotel that looks pretty rough, etc

In east asia its very safe. people are ashamed of doing crime. In the west it is very common to see petty crime every day. Its not safe to go anywhere with your family. Especially in the usa where people are angry all the time. That hotel lol. Some very dodgy places in seoul 😀

I was stationed in the U.S. Army in Germany and spent time on the border. It was really crazy and have many pictures from it and the East German/Russian soldiers/guards giving us the middle finger. 🖕 lol I was there when the wall came down and it was so awesome 👏

I'm not really sure what the point of you staying in a dodgy hotel near the border was, especially since you ended up having to join the exact same tour at the DMZ anyway since independent travel there is not allowed. Technically these tours don't actually go into the DMZ anyway, since the actual DMZ is farther up the road and heavily guarded, of course. What you visited -- and where all the tours go -- is a buffer zone just south of the DMZ, which is called the Civilian Control Zone. As the name implies, civilians can visit there, but only with a tour. So to get from South Korea to North Korea would require traveling across several of these zones. South Korea --> Civilian Control Zone --> southern half of DMZ --> Military Demarcation Line (the border) --> northern half of DMZ --> North Korea.
