North Korea in the early 2000’s was a legitimately bad place to be for basically anyone. It was worse than Afghanistan or Iraq of the same time. The fact that Shane went during this time to North Korea and wasn’t assassinated once he got back is truly amazing. This man has balls of steel.

I love this documentary, there is so much personality put into it it's insane, now i do like some of the new ones being done, but i gotta admit, Vice has lost so much of their personality and just kinda feel like a normal news network with the exception that the reporters go and get shot at a couple times.

I still come back to this series from time to time, such a great documentary

Shane Smith is the living embodiment of what vice is suppose to be. I think as a smaller outlet they were more effective in being unique but with mainstream success vice is not what it was. These documentarys take you on an adventure which is cinematic with it's characters , music and feel. I hope Shane Smith gets back in the field more like how it was previously.

Sometimes i come back and watch these old vice documentaries and it makes me sad that they aren’t happening anymore :( at least the ones like they used to do.

This is basically the best documentary regarding North Korea. I loved the field trip vibe of the entire documentary. It feels like I am taking a trip with Simon and Shane. Granted a it's a scary trip, but a trip nonetheless.

I'm scared to think of what happened to the people that let these guys in. And also the guide. after these documentaries went out I'm sure some higher ups in North-Korea saw it and heads had to roll. It's so sad.

We really need to be more critical of ourselves before we ciritique other countries - even countries like North Korea. We have labor camps in the "west". We call them prisons, particuarly privately run for profit prisons. We even lock people up for the same reasons - to meet the quota that makes the contract profitable for the company running it and politically acceptable for the politicians assigning the contracts. All those guys working for a 25c per hour wage are being co-erced into working fundamentally against their will - they may sign on, but they sign on because the environment and the other options, not because they really want to work for 25cents (or whatever) an hour.

There is something so great, extreme and humane about these types of documentaries/news clips. Not just Russian Lumber Camps. But all of these things that are forgotten or not on the radar: Cannibal warlords in Liberia, Moonshine brewing in Africa, Guerilla Gardeners in Atlanta, Vigilante Mobs in Johannesburg etc. etc. etc. Colorful, and fascinating. Even the drunken Russian on the train was interesting!

Old Vice is my favorite Vice. So many interesting stories from the corners of the world.

I love how at VICE the reporters always seem kind of chill and underprepared in the face of possibly horrible outcomes like this guy drinking wine and laughing at the chance that they can get assassinated or Hamilton Morris going in to the Amazon rainforest in full emo attire with a some wierd box possibly filled with drugs.

No doubts the best series on VICE is this.

Vice was my favorite news/documentary/investigative journalism source until recently, things have gone downhill & gotten boring.

This was when VICE was real and tough no BS reporting...I hope Shane is still with VICE...he is awesome
