Drove this road many times over the 35 years hubby and I drove team coast to coast. Thanks for the memories. I’d do it all over again if he were still here. 😢
I developed a phobia of 6% grade, downhill freeways and highways within the past 10 years. Never had it when I was under 30 years old. I went down the grapevine about a year ago in a sedan. I nearly had a heart attack. Sweaty palms. Holding the steering wheel tight. Real fear for the full 15-20 minutes... until I hit the flat valley. I can never do it again.
Especially when there going slow and then when you go to pass they speed up. Whats really bad is when they get in front of you and then slow down again.( Very polite people don't you think). You need a brush guard on the front of your truck. Only kidding. Good video. Thanks Mike. Ginger \
I used to live in San Diego. All roads north lead thru LA county. Always a pain in the ass. Had to drive that route to see any family up north. Great video. Brings back some "bad" memories. LOL.
It is amazing how bad the freeways are in California with all the new taxes and other fees we are paying to maintain them. It makes one wonder where the money is really going.
Years ago, I-90 over Snoqualmie Pass was like that. Then they started doing that bentonite injection process to relevel tthe slabs. Night and day difference!
I feel like I'm thinking the exact same thing about other drivers when I drive. Love your commentary! My 9 year old son loved your GTA 5 comment on Interstate 210 lol.
The rough roads are left that way on purpose. It helps to deter people from coming in and driving their roads. Hell... I'm a trucker and hate Cali roads.... once I get my own truck and go O/O, I will Never go to Cali again!
@@truckerron I've been a trucker over 40 yrs we had nice roads but the first term jerry brown had years ago he siphoned off the highway funds for his welfare programs ever time they pass a highway bond they reroute the money this time instead of the roads they used for that train then billions wind up missing
@@truckerron YOU ARE EITHER NUTS OR DISHONEST, California native . I have been every where in the past 48 years and California tops all of them, climate, highest mountains, Pacific ocean everything.
The flat 2 lane portion of I-5 up thru the central valley is where the road is cracked and falling apart, especially the right lane. Horrible, when I'm hauling my big LQ 4 horse trailer. I try to ride the left lane when I can, but the cars are flying by doing 80-90 mph. Nice vid. Thanks 👍
Now Mike, don't get all cranky about CA roads. You know that all those trucks DO take a toll! The left lanes are just plain beautiful, "hammer" you call it? . . . ! Stay safe.
Agree with your comments 100%! I drive a dry box through the I-5 truck bypass and always get blocked by cars...that don't belong there. They slow you down when you need speed at the climb. Wish we can ram them off...to teach them a lesson...but commercial drivers are always on the hook. The roads suck in that area for years because Caltrans never supervises the work of cheap bidders they hire. Most CDoT 'supervisors' just sit in their truck and aren't involved with proper construction methods... because its the blind leading the blind. If the repairs dont work...oh well...they got paid no matter what. Only a few sections of road in that area are repaired properly. They blame traffic density in the area for slower work...for.last five years...but CDoT doesn't care.
I grew up in Los Angeles until the 70's. Learned how to drive on those freeways. I'm sure they are tore up after 40 years or so of traffic. But glad I don't live there any more. You mentioned Tehachape and I once drove a semi over that...in the dark..thru a hugh fire. It was a bit scary especially when a number of fire fighters started walking thru the smoke in front of my rig. Good thing I was going slow because the visability sucked. LOL 😂😂
I've seen so many episodes of CHiPs filmed along that stretch of the 210 back in the 70's and 80's, where the cars suddenly hit and "catch air" then the music starts: Thump.... Thump.... Thump..... Thump...
That is so cool driving on the 5 to some Car Wash soundtrack music, throw on some more Rolls Royce music from the 80's to go with the cool driving videos :-)
In the uk on the motorways trucks are not allowed in the third lane and the middle lane is the overtaking lane Love ya videos man and ya chatter best videos on here thanks.
Going down the Grapevine, drivers of cars will actually tap their brakes to slow down. Just about the only place near Los Angeles where most drivers will think about slowing down even when there's no traffic.
the roads in coastal California are used day and night. It's hard to get time to fix them. I saw a lot of road repair going on during the start of the Covid shut down.
Sorry about my roads on my side of town we working on it.I know the the 5-210-118-405-101-60-15-10,is all fuck up but we working on it. Lol. Stay safe Driver.
WoW! Sacramento is off Hwy 99 and I-5. San Francisco is at the end of West Bound I-80. Plus you are going down the Grapevine at 60mph. North bound after the rest area it goes to 46 mph then down to 35 mph.
"We was drivin' up the Grapevine Hill, passin' cars like they was standin' still. All of a sudden in the wink of an eye, a Cadillac sedan passed us by. I said boys, that's a mark for me, but by then the tail lights was all you could see.
Drove the grapevine prob a dozen times in the early 90's those roads were fine back then, sad, california roads and those areas don't even have to deal with salt and freezing roads.
Riding, Try to remember Cali has EARTHQUAKES. Smooth roads don't last. Also, that downhill truck speed limit is ridiculous. Designated pre-jake brake, it is a waste of brake linings.LOL Crossing over a solid line is ILLEGAL! LOL
I used to live in Torrance, and would take the Five to Reno. That Bozo in the Red Car that waited to the last minute for the Lane Change to Exit is too normal, and it would be nice for them to just have an event to prevent their future Vehicle's Operation. From the beginning of November to the third week of January is the best chance of Rain.
I5 through Castaic...HORRIBLE roads...210 USED to be the least driven HWY in So Cal area...there are none today! Ever drive the 110 into LA? One of if not the oldest freeway in LA...super narrow, worn...almost no on ramp momentum like on exit 43. Unless you have a BMW, you better hope there is no truck a comin' Exit 205 Flying J in Lebec...Motel 6 is pretty good as well as Gorman Studio 6...both converted hotels...huge rooms! $60 trucker rate...they did remodel the FJ in Lebec...tore down Denny's years earlier...now it's a Wendys...Mexican food rest in Lebec is excellent btw!
The rule is: "Never pass on the right." It's more difficult for the driver to detect activity on the right-side of his rig. The right side of a big-rig is also called the "blind-side," or, "lado siego," in Spanish, (a language of which the narrator eludes to having a some knowledge). The right side is the blind side MOSTLY because, when backing, the tractor is cocked 0-90⁰ counter-clockwise to the trailer, (by turning the steering-wheel to the right), making the left-side of the rig, the "sight-side."
I lived there and drove those highways back in the 1970's. Driving on the Freeway was like sitting on your living room sofa, so calm and relaxing, compared with the East Coast traffic and roads I grew up with. Last year, I went back to the LA area, and it's like day and night. I think the CA roads are now among the worst. Maybe you need to increase taxes and fees and petrol prices to keep up maintenance?
Funny thing about that; taxes and fees were increased "to keep up maintenance" two years ago and literally every penny was spent by the governor to build housing for illegal aliens instead. The registration fee for my nine-year-old car is almost as much as was when it was brand new. The fact is Cal Trans has more than enough money to maintain the roads, they just don't. It is spent somewhere else.
The crappiest road i have personally driven on was from Cleveland, Oh to Columbia Sc. I think its interstate 55. Anyway that road looked like a squadron of B-29's carpet bombed it. Once out of Ohio it got better.
At 7:40 your about to go under the 14 freeway up to Palmdale/Lancaster and Edwards Air Force base and Mohave. This section you are about to go under collapsed in 1994 North Ridge Earthquake and a Highway patrol officer drove off of it on his motorcycle coming into the San Fernando Valley to help with efforts. Yes he died. I know this area well as we used to street race on a local road nearby. You are right, the democrats have screwed the roads up, they use to be very smooth even after the earthquakes they would have crews out fixing them right away. They look like crap now. I did the Grapevine in an old 70's Chevy van with a 350CC with 400HP . Half way up we lost a cylinder and had to tear off the valve cover and kill that cylinder. Went to Bakersfield a few times to drag race. Keep the great video's coming I love the desert and plan on retiring in Arizona. Would you consider being a team. I've notice you like a lot of the same things I do, Like quoting movies like galaxy Quest. LOL! I've had my CDL license for 6 months I'm 56 and have Hazmat, Tanker Double and Triple endorsements. I graduated at the top of my class with a 90% score I am not afraid of snow or inclimate weather. Though I prefer to drive during the day. I am Familiar with California, Arizona and Nevada. Or I was until 1995 when I moved back to Ohio. But I'm certain they don't move the freeways. But I'm sure you would say something my dad would say "Your tits aren't big enough"! LOL!
We use channel 15 once you leave the 210 fwy. Than we use channel 17 at hwy 46 all the way up to Canada. And NEVER speed down the Grapevine, its a double fine zone.
10:58 Yes, the major highways in Mexico are smoother than a lot of our interstates. The toll roads are even better (light to moderate traffic, smooth pavement, and patrolling motorist service trucks). The second level of highways in Mexico are much more variable. You can be driving along and a lane will just end with no warning or merge markings. You will also find speed bumps scattered around and on roads that would be 55MPH in the US (lots of oh sh!t, ouch!).
What I cannot for the life of me figure out is why they can repave those stretches of the I-5 as they do, but under those over passes it's left rough as -------, you literally loose your kidneys when you go under them, then the other side nice new pavement again....why???
They have to be careful about raising the roadway and losing the clearance under the overpass. Interstate highways have pretty standardized clearances all over the country, particularly important for oversize loads.
It's not "Military Time". It is "24 hour time", used in most official organisations world-wide, such as Airlines (for planning etc, but not for customer use - they do not understand 24 hour time). You could call it "USA Military Time" IF, and only IF, it was a single time zone for the entire USA.
Dude, I enjoy driving, and if it involves any kind of distance, then all the better. But some of the MOST dangerous and STUPID people in the world are behind the wheel. It doesn't matter how much effort you make to stay safe and defensive, there are always idiots who will do everything to counter it.
I WISH I had a dollar for every time I had to drive over this d m Grapevine, I would be a millionaire. Get in the fast lane nit wit, grrrrrrrrrr. Retirement is fantastic at "last"yippee.
Hey buddy sorry that you have to drive through California with a bumpy road that should repair it the right way not half fast yeah they did a piss poor job on it
California definitely has bad roads but, if you go to Beverly Hills or other rich areas they are great. Actually they have finally been spending our outrageous gas tax money on fixing roads in the last few years. Highway 99 used to be mostly 2 lanes each direction and now they have a lot more 3-5 lane sections.
Canada...... we close HWY'S up here after there clogged with wrecked BMW'$ of Newcomer'$ with BALD LOW PROFILE TIRES.....401 & 400 Quebec isn't $TUPID , you get fined for CRAP TIRE'$ there....OUI !
To the accident that happened in California with a full people losing their lives this is my thing thought that once an individual get a Class A license or a class B license that they are put with a experienced driver under the impression was 30 days or more so that they can be toward the road the correct way cuz just sitting in class it's not going to teach you about driving down a hill why you're in the vehicle and it's being explain to you how to drive down a hill for what reason I'm only saying this cuz I've worked on the highway I quit that job because people stupid I don't drive my own personal car Beyond its ability I don't even drive it up to its ability because I've seen so many freaking accident that could be avoided but because they were not avoided from stupidity and seeing people being killed on the highway and you work that kind of job man you kind of it changes the way that you drive your own vehicle
Such as the man that was driving his car into the back of a dump truck back in 2003 and it was Christmas Eve and he died and kind of pissed me off cuz I had to work that accident because down here and Virginia it snow like it was Nobody's Business a giving everybody curfew to get off the road because they knew the storm was going to be the Jets that bad and during that time I was working for the highway and believe you me nobody believed it was going to snow that bad now is driving a plow truck and I'm making a pass it snowed so hard it covered the road by a Mia's I made a pass so that's when we switch to the motives throwing salt and just pushing up but I cannot tell you how many stupid ass people that were out on the road and we're getting stuck and we had to get them unstuck digging them out with a plow truck cuz when I shovel you were never done it keep trucking
All experienced professional drivers stay in the right lane 95 % of there drive, and stay away from all trucks, they know too many rookies, stupid 4 wheelers and super truckers.
Sure got my moneys worth on this one! Sixteen negative comments and bitchs every five minutes. If you don`t like Caif roads or drivers stay off the sidewalk!
