I wish I could send this to my former landlady, she grew up at St. Regis reservation along the St Lawrence river, that includes New York, Ontario and Quebec lands. She is a Mohawk, and was a part of the American Indian group here in Syracuse, NY. Here in New York so she told me your Mother has to belong to the clan to belong to the clan, if your mother was not Indian then you were not considered Indian. If my memory serves me the clan mothers voted on who will be the male clan leaders.

When covering this region, it would be a good idea to acknowledge that these groups didn't end at the border with Canada.
