I'm glad i got to see them live in 2007 (or was it 2008), Norther was my favorite band along with Wintersun when i was in middle school :D Good times.. helped that they were playing gigs in my home town :)
The part no one mentioned, but huge respect to these guys for going way out in the middle of nowhere in the dead of winter, and then set everything up on a frozen lake, just to shoot a music vid, and somehow manage to not even look the slightest bit cold
It's a beautiful thing called adrenaline. When that special juice is flowing through your veins, you can do things that normally wouldn't be possible. For instance, playing HS Football, I rolled my ankle BADLY. I couldn't believe I didn't break it. I was running the ball as a tailback and I tried to spin away from a defender when another defender fell on my legs, causing me to roll my ankle while spinning. Anyways, I normally should have come out of the game, but this was Regional Playoffs. Adrenaline was pumping big time, we were winning 20-14 late in 3rd quarter. I refused to come out of the game. I had training staff tape my ankle up and wrap it, and I continued to play. After I rolled my ankle, i went on to rush for 44 more yards and the game winning TD with about 1:10 left in the game. Now, of course I needed a lil help help from training staff with taping/wrapping ankle up and getting treatment while our defense was on field, but let me tell you, after the game, when I finally stopped playing, my ankle was huge, excruciatingly painful. I couldn't walk on it. Adrenaline is an amazing thing.
@@JudasSlays2426 wow what an experience that must have been. And well written too, had me on the edge of my seat no lie haha. Hopefully you didn't get any lasting pain/ankle problems later on, I know I've heard of sports injuries from long ago healing only to come back as problematic later in life. I love hearing about people's stories like this, I'm sure that's a lasting memory you'll keep with you forever, even telling your grandkids or great-grandkids about!
@@Trigotrymancy Thank you for the kind words! Sometimes my writing abilities may be lacking, but I guess I did write the story pretty well.. To be honest, that same ankle does tend to give me a little trouble every now and then, it was the worst possible rolling of the ankle, without snapping any bones or major tendons. I did get lucky in that manner! When it's cold out, especially, is when I can feel the discomfort in the ankle. I still tend to do pretty well every day, regardless. Yes, I honestly VIVIDLY remember that game. I was a pretty fast guy, I also played baseball, soccer, and I wrestled. I was pretty athletic. I didn't play all 4 sports at once, just over the years. Played soccer from about 10-14, baseball I played for a good 10 years, I wrestled for 5 years, and I played football from 14-17. I basically did 3 sports mostly at all times. I was pretty athletic, fast, strong. The football team liked my speed and strength combination so much so, they requested I play both sides of ball. Offensively, I would line up as Tailback or WR (I also had excellent hands from baseball) and on Defense, they would put me either at Safety or any of the LB positions (usually outside LB to have me blitz or track the RB on sweeps/screens). When we had ball on Offense, I was 90% a Tailback, running sweeps, screens, and running it off tackle. My speed and elusiveness is why they loved using me in those roles. We had a bigger bruiser type Tailback but they used him for straight ahead run plays. I remember the Defense was getting gashed by our run game. So the Defense stacked the box, after halftime. Even then, it didn't help too much because I would be thrown a screen and I would run it 15-20 yards. This particular play, I didn't like their Defensive alignment. They had brought their safety in to play the run, I was supposed to run off tackle, I was gonna get nowhere. I look at coach and signal him to their D. Let him know I didn't like that, I suggested a sweep, he had our QB audible out to the sweep. Well, the other RB was supposed to hustle over and lead block for me. He didn't. Idk if he missed the signal and audible or what, but I was hit by defender 3 yards behind the line, but was able to slip it. That slowed me down just enough. I gained about 3 yards and then I tried to spin away from their Safety and that's when I think a LB dove and came down on my leg while I was trying to spin away. I couldn't believe it wasn't broken. Initially, I thought it was worse than it was. I had help getting to my feet, I wasn't coming out of that game for anything, unless I just couldn't go, but I was not coming out. I just kept walking a bit to help loosen it up some, show the coaches I could still play. I allowed HC to take me out long enough to get the ankle taped and wrapped. Once I got that done, I popped up and started walking on it. From there onto end of game, I only played on offense. When on defense, that's when I got treatment on it and staff helped keep it loose. HC had made sure for rest of game, our bigger RB didn't miss one more block when I was running the ball. It makes all the difference, but reason why I was able to rush for almost 50 more yards and scored the game winner (at that point, we were down 21-20). Scoring with a little over 1 minute left, was one of the greatest feelings I've ever experienced! Adrenaline pumping, crowd is loud and yelling, Regional Playoff game. All of that kept powering me on. Our crowd was going nuts when I scored. Getting goosebumps right now thinking about it lol. Sorry for the storybook, but I wanted to best describe it all to you, the best I could. Thanks for the interest! I haven't told that story in probably 10 years..
DeSever And only now I realize you made this comment because Petri was part of Norther and left when he replaced Jari in Ensiferum and you are comparing Petri's old work to his new work. Don't worry Anton Rossi, I am pretty slow too .-.
Holy shit, this is awesome! Randomly Checked them out and they are really great! Petri is like another person, but when alexi died he told us, that they hang out a lot that time. Norther sounds for me like cob with a little more Melo death, you can hear alexis influence. Now I have to listen to all of their stuff. RIP alexi
Of course you can hear Alexi's influence! Not many people know this but COB helped out Norther when they were forming, they helped with instruments, riffs and and finding a place to practice. At that time they were not even called norther, they were called Requiem. Most of the Finnish melodic death metal band all come from the same town in Espoo, they all know each other and write riffs for eachother
this used to be one of my favourites back in 2010 I've been trying to remember the Band and The Title for weeks now Until JUST NOW! It came to my mind as I was sitting on the toilet FUCK YEAH, MIRROR OF MADNESS !! \m/
It's been over 15 years that I've met Norther and that is my favourite solo of all time. Probably played it over 10k times on guitar. Also Norther is still my favourite band even after a long time they broke up.
Petri, why have you left this band? The album 2011 was awful. The year later Norther died. They were the 1-st metal group I have heard 1-st. And always were the best. I am still listening their albums, particularly 2002-2003
We had two excellent bands: Ensiferum with Jari, and Norther with Petri. Jari left Ensiferum and Petri left norther, so those two bands eventually were fucked up.
I used to be well into this stuff - listening to DnB these days, but just strolled across this and its still as awesome as i heard it back in the day. Brilliant melodies, amazing Palm muting skills, Solos that fry your brain, and some pretty bad-ass vox ( bar one or two, one being 'fuc off my mind' - ?? :D what thats meant to mean, i dont know) Loving it.
I wish that end riff would last just a little longer. When i'm angry with myself, i picutre me playing guitar and singing this song atop a frozen mountain top somewhere in scandinavia haha
"Hello metalheads. Instead of a Metal rebellion i propose a new plan. 1. Don't bash other metal artists, we must unite! We can't fight against pop music if we aren't even together 2. Watch more and more metal videos to get it to the top of the RU-vid vid list If you like this idea, thumbs it up JUST so people can see it, and also spread it around if you like this idea Let's show that metal kicks ass! Copy this text in every Metal video you watch and we´re getting the power
Ensiferums albums unsung heroes and on have sucked i loved seeing them live but all their good songs were written by jari, yes iron and victory songs were good but i still have to say Jari made them and now is phenomenal with wintersun.
Agreed. They went from every song on the album being a masterpiece to every song being meh. The first 3 albums are the best melodic death ever composed IMAO.
You say all their good songs were written by Jari, and I know when you say that, you are referring to when Jari was in the band. The truth is that even when Jari was in the band, Marcus was primarily writing the songs. Jari absolutely added his ambition and flare, but he did not write the songs, really. Marcus was the master behind nearly all of Ensiferum's work. This creates some confusion since when Jari left, the sound changed so much, but actually, that wasn't the reason. Marcus changed. What are your favorite old Ensiferum songs? Token of Time? Guardians of Fate? Windrider? Treacherous Gods? Then thank Marcus for that, because he wrote pretty much everything. Again though, Jari spiced it all up OH SO well. But do not fail to give credit where it is due. Marcus is an incredible writer of music. And he was the origin for pretty much all of the songs. All that said... my favorite Ensiferum albums are those which feature Jari. Without him, there is a void unfulfilled. However, the Dragonheads EP is fantastic, and Petri stepped in fantastically at this point. And the 10th Anniversary DVD, oh man, I can't imagine someone doing a better job in place of Jari than Petri did there. That concert is timeless. I am forever grateful it was not only caught on film, but released as an official product to be owned by eager fans. I'm also glad Jari went on to create Wintersun. Although, its been quite uneventful these past few years. He is too critical of himself and I think it just creates unnecessary delays. Wintersun self title album is just fine, and we don't need it to be LIGHTYEARS better than that at the expense of zero content for decades. I prefer the simplicity (although its not so simple) of Wintersun self title album, to so many years in waiting for ultra polished, and not so exceedingly great material in the form of EP length releases. Well... sorry for the essay. Good to talk with fellow metal heads though.
Damnit, I've always loved Norther and I was hoping one day they'd finally play in the US. Then they go and split up. This seems to happen with every foreign band I fall in love with.
I've been into metal for a long time, but I'm just starting to discover bands like Norther, Children of Bodom, Wintersun, and Starkill, and I really like them. Any other recommendations for great bands like this?
+Jonah Esty I've actually seen Wintersun, Starkill, and Bodom live. Got to meet all of Starkill, really nice guys. Parker kept giving me hugs. I even met Alexi Lahio, he was in a rush but he snapped a pic with me and we talked for a few minutes, really nice guy but kinda quiet. Let's see here, Eternal Tears of Sorow, Darkseed, Crematory, My Dying Bride, Deathstars (before they were Swordmaster, a black metal band), Sentenced, Charon, Poisonblack, Katatonia (their older material is really dark and heavy), Solution .45, Scar Symmetry, Sybreed, Skyfire, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, and At the Gates. There's tons more but that's a start.
+kyle boswell Awesome story! I know My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Scar Symmetry, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, and At The Gates, but I'll check the others out.
+Jonah Esty You definitely have to give Death, Periphery, Akercocke, Cynic, Atheist, Gojira, Carcass, Cattle Decapitation, Obscura, Medeia and Faceless a try. They may not be similar to this but are awesome nonetheless
Great vocal, great lyrics, great melody, great guitar, drums... I'm complitly drunk, just hearing this song and drink whith mirror... -"na zdrowie!" (on heal! -toast from Poland)...
