Southbound train approaching Old Street. Instead of the usual sound of a train thundering and roaring down the tunnel, trains now announce their imminent arrival with a whining sound. Presumably this is due to modern track damping out the vibrations

It's because the new track is now continuously welded, meaning the sound travels along the track much further.

New track has a rough surface and is noisier until the passage of trains polish it smooth.

Additional info The type of track that is used is Ballastless Plinth tracks and that type of tracks reduce the Clickety clack sound of the train it also reduce the vibration. some sounds are came from the friction between the bogie and the steel rail it self. This is an example of Ballastless Plinth Tracks (bi-block type): www.google.com/search?q=plinth+tracks&client=ms-android-samsung-ga-rev1&prmd=isvn&sxsrf=ALeKk03N6CoqcI9qghtGwxC5h2Ni9ARuTg:1611233355519&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwik7bj-h63uAhW1y4sBHZDHAeIQ_AUoAXoECAYQAQ&biw=412&bih=756&dpr=2.63#imgrc=NW7UsV9MN_qIaM

MAS_pilot. The round white mushroom shaped things are insulators, they stop the high voltage in the 2 conductor rails leaking to earth. They dont usually show up so white in tunnel sections as they are covered in dirt and dust, they are there for a reason. All electric railways throughout the world using conductor rails have insulators spaced along the track.

lee harvey thanks for the answer. Also, is it possible for this train to operate on the Jubilee line as compensation for the 1996 stock cracks?
@DeepChillWolf
@DeepChillWolf 4 года назад
@@MalaysianAviator737-8 Very unlikely as the 1995 stock runs on DC power instead of AC, which the 1996 stock uses (hence why they sound different). The door layout is also different between both trains, so the 1995 stock wouldn't be able to properly line up with the platform screen doors on the Jubilee Line Extension. If the 1996 stock was converted to DC, it would probably be able to run on the Northern Line if it wanted.

@Edwiness but the other characteristic is much less sound of 'roaring' of metal on metal, indicating that the vibrations seem to be much more efficiently damped. It seems to be more motor noise vibrating down the track

Not going to lie, I like that doing, it’s menacing and sounds somehow modern. Probably isn’t great for tracks though

It's perfectly safe for the tracks, it's just vibrations from the train coming down them.

I noticed a similar whirring noise on a newly-opened light rail line where I live (Denver, Colorado, USA area) and other lines on that system - or that same line a few years later - didn't make that noise. Looking closely at the brand-new rails, it looked like they had a somewhat rough surface, probably from a grinding process in their manufacture, that initially hadn't been worn smooth. I could imagine this being similar. This video is over 10 years old, do the trains still make this noise?
