Seven students and three staff from the Northern Youth Leadership program took part in a week-long science expedition aboard the vessel, R/V Nahidik on Great Slave Lake. The program supports young people from across the Northwest Territories through remote wilderness programming. While aboard the vessel, the students were able to assist in the retrieval and redeployment of a full-depth, year-round mooring with 11 recording thermometers. They downloaded a full year of data from the mooring under the direction of, chief scientist, Eddie Carmack.
As a part of the expedition the students also operated an ROV, job shadowed various positions on the vessel and collected both water and sediment samples from the lake. Multi-beam sonar data collected along transects will also be examined as part of the study, as well as sub-bottom profiling and sediment coring samples. These initial studies of the lake’s physics and bathymetry will provide a basis for future research.
