About this game:
GeoGuessr is a web-based geographic discovery game designed by Anton Wallén. The game uses a semi-randomized Google Street View location and requires players to guess their location in the world using only the clues visible.

Reading cyrillic becomes pretty easy when you realize that C is S, B is V, and the "backwards N" is I.

Don't forget X is H, X with a line in the middle is ZH, the partially open B is B, backwards R is YA, and the 3 or so remaining characters that defy English conventions

Also 3 is 'Z', at first I thought you meant that ;D F is hilarious though, and there's also difference between 'E' (weird backwards E) nd 'YE' (E), there's 'YO' (E with umlaut?...) and YU (that's... uh...), lol One would think that at this point NL and Sin would at least look up cyrilic once to know how to read the city names. Russia is huge but empty so there's often some big cities far away on signs, like that Vladivostok.

15:00 The middle city on the sign, one that's 140km away is called Bikin. Just thought I'd let you know. Also, distance between Moscow and St. Petersburg is roughly 700km,, you can use it for scaling.

Moscow, Vladivostok and Murmansk are also the Russian locations I can identify reliably. There are plenty of other Russian cities that I could pinpoint at the drop of a hat on a map in English -- but I instantly identify those words in Russian.

It was perfectly possible to miss the Vladivostok sign and only see the one that lists smaller cities. Even if you take the time to piece together the romanization you've got a lot of ground to cover unless you're familiar with russian geography. Vladivostok shows up one zoom level higher than the largest city on the other sign, Khabarovsk, and at that level even if you aren't familiar with vladivostok you've only got 10s of cities to sift through. If you only saw Khabarovsk you've got 100s.

I-69 goes from Detroit to the Mexican border in Texas. A good amount of the southern bits are not built yet though. I lived near it in Indiana for a bit, one of the few places where they have to put locks and fences around the highway signs to stop people from stealing them.

NL this will help you so much with interstate signs. if it ends with 5 it generally runs north-south. like I-5 up the West coast. if it ends in 0 it runs east-west. if it's a different number like 44 or 39 it's diagonal.

On the Quebec guess, I said "there's too much English for this to be Quebec or France... this looks like a place where everyone speaks English, but everything is named in French", so I guessed fuckin' Louisiana. But that last Russian guess? Saw Khabarovsk (in Russian, of course), and immediately knew I recognized that city, and that it was a big one. Went and found in like a fuckin' champ.

Mateusz Russian guesses rarely have a lot of information, there's not much of an opportunity to figure out even *what side* of Russia you're on. Meanwhile, America has a lot of signage that includes state names, and has very clearly different climate regions that show up in Geoguessr which make it easier to guess the general area of a location. The same can be done with a lot of countries, you can guess from language, geography, buildings and signage where you might be.

"and has very clearly different climate regions that show up in Geoguessr" that's the same as saying: look at the terrain, trees, weather, roads condition, etc. in a russian guess. For me both Russia and USA (when it comes to isolated highway guesses) look the same. It's just empty and blank.

When I'm playing Geoguessr I'll also rate all American guesses 1* Sinvicta, the states are literally indistinguishable from each other to non-american people anyways

Not really. If you play a lot and watched this whole series then you learn a lot about american guesses. I'm nowhere near the US but I can get fairly good guesses consistently thanks to NL and Sinny V!

Just remember; if there are mountains, it is highly likely you are out west. Kind of rare to get a guess out east with a state with mountains (Tennessee, West Virginia, etc).

I thought I did pretty well on the challenge, especially being an American and getting decent on the Canadian and Sweden guess (and the Nebraska one I nearly had 5,000) but holy when I saw NL's score, he crushed it! Edit: He still rates petty as hell though. How was that Nebraska less than the semi-lucky Russia guess

NL should be more like Sinvicta and MALF, and butter us up rather than oppose us. We're basically only reactive in terms of strategy, which greatly limits our chances at victory. Choosing to collude with another player is the most proactive move we can make, so it'd be wise for the other players to think of us an ally rather than opponent, and strategize on how to win our favor.
