Sometimes watching vtubers makes me think we're in the most boring version of a cyberpunk dystopia already. When I was a kid I never expected to see an anime catgirl talking to a literal AI in virtual reality within my lifetime but yet, Fillian and Neurosama do be hanging out in front of an audience of thousands.

What is the percentage of audience who cares about the voice over the character though? I feel like most fall flat if they pivot to a new company with a new random character

​@@atomknight8361nah, most of the appeal is the person. It's basically a live streamer with lore and an anime character design. DokiBird is one of the biggest vTubers rn a she used to be corporate and had to switch model but she's still the same person

​@atomknight8361 Nah you've got it backwards. Most vtubers aren't really "in-character". If they've built up an audience, that audience will keep watching for the same reasons people watch any streamer. If they moved to a different character, most fans will carry over as long as the streams are similar enough (and as long as they know it's that person)

Riley0424 mentioned DokiBird in his comment, but it's worth mentioning an anecdote: Kizuna Ai is widely thought of as the "first vtuber", and when her voice actress retired they *did* attempt to replace her voice actress, to avoid retiring the character. But there was a huge backlash to it, and the character's popularity dropped a ton. It's basically the lesson that taught corporate vtubing agencies that it wouldn't be a good idea to just replace the talents voicing the characters, so they graduate/retire instead.

It's not that complicated, but it goes against a lot of what I'd take as "common sense", and like him I would make wrong assumptions about the logic/logistics of it all until I had a very long (and very similar) Q&A with a friend that's into vtubers

I didn't care when he knew nothing, but when he's trying to learn and being fed wrong or misleading information, I realize how invested I am in having him properly understand it all Get me in a call with NL and I can explain it all and answer all of his questions in a way that makes sense in under 5 minutes

To be fair, that kind of happened with Kizuna Ai, but everyone hated it because it sucks. That showed other companies that it wouldn't go over well if they tried it too.

There have been attempts to do it, but generally speaking the fans just revolt or hate it so it doesn't happen anymore unless the corporate owner is really short-sighted and greedy

I think the disconnect that everyone has with it, is literally just the "why" like why do people prefer a virtual model streamer as opposed to a real one, all the while claiming that none of the interest is based in sexual attraction to the vtuber model itself.

Corpo models have terrible rigging compared to anything in the upper tier of indies, my dude. Hololive is popular despite their rigging quality, not because of it.

​@@Vyseris I mean sure Shylily has probably the best rigging there is, but the average rigging in hololive is very good. The exceptions are pretty much limited to a sole rigger, who worked on Gura and a few others. I'm also not saying the quality of the models is the reason hololive is popular. Clips and memes were way more important in hololive history than models. But the fact stands hololive puts a lot of money into their models. If you just look at the illustrators that did each members, they were top tier artists as soon as 1st gen. When Fubuki's original model was made they were already working with Rariemonn. On top of that, the upper tier of indies are not exempt to putting in a lot of money towards models. Shylily spent 8k on her latest model alone.

If you're a Hololive fan, I think as long as Yagoo is in charge, you can trust the company. If you're a Nijisanji fan... that's rough buddy
